- 10ofDiamonds, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Delicious demonstration of why psychologists are scientists.
- amabaie, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2It's funny, but when people fall in love they easily fail to look at all the signs of what the person is like when she/he is not in love - the person they will be with for the rest of their life when real life is what they have to focus on.
- f0naaz01, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Being a Psychologist I have serious issues with this kind of research. It's based on a lot of assumptions. First a lot of things we do, including a big smile in pics are part of social norms. Even if the smile does actually indicates positive personality what are the chances that life experiences won't change their approach to life? Of course I am assuming that people change their approach to life from age 10 to age 20.
- booyahbitch, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Soooo...if you are a miserable ***** from the time you are 10 years old, you will have marriage problems...I can see how that makes sense! Buried for being Captain Obvious!!!!
- orthodoxDrew, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2i smell *****
how bout we give whatever money they spent on that to me, so my wife and i can go to the greek islands and start a cybercafe. that would make at least one marriage super awesome. - StreetPreacher, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2It looks to me like neither one is a very good predictor. FTA:
"researchers looked at people's college yearbook photos ... None of the people who fell within the top 10 percent of smile strength had divorced, while within the bottom 10 percent of smilers, almost one in four had had a marriage that ended"
But isn't the overall divorce rate in America something like 50%? If so, then aren't the 10% at the bottom still beating the odds 2:1? Also, they say nothing about the sample size or other variants in the population.
I think a better study would be to look at divorce rates vs. education and socio-economic class. Money issues and financial stress are by far the leading cause of divorce, and one would expect that to be disproportionate amongst lower classes. - Julian88888888, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2the russians never smile in any photographs...
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Ermm.. doesn't really apply here, they've straight out said if they're not smiling don't marry them. They're simply painting a black and white picture, excluding every other variable that contributes to one's personality.
- trogdor282, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2Thanks captain obvious. Turn on Jerry Springer and look at all the people who are DETERMINED to make themselves miserable. Soon everybody around them is miserable too.
- Hraes, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2Go superstition! Or not. Why is this on the front page? Buried.
- theberlindoctor, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Maybe they should have asked if they were happy marriages. I know plenty of people who stay in pretty awful ones and others who are much happier now that they've re-married.
Interesting study tho.. - mmcvey, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2Biased "happy people" agenda, at it again.........................
- noumuon, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1awesome... FTA: "While the connection is striking, the researchers stress that they can't conclude anything about the cause of the correlation.'
thanks for your useless contribution. - Julian88888888, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1photoshopped, you can tell from the pixels.
- PhantomRogue, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1If they can't conclude anything about the cause... why publish the results? They are basically saying, So those people who smile; their marriage lasts longer...but we have no idea why. That's some GREAT research there, definitely needed publishing.
- NJank, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1There you go. Your marriage success is determined by proper shutter timing, and whether you were saying Cheese, Happy, or Pizza for the photographer.
- noumuon, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1"If they can't conclude anything about the cause... why publish the results?"
you must be new to the "science" of psychology. - LucasHenderson, on 04/16/2009, -2/+2http://digg.com/health/Children_with_brightest_smi ...

- Pentatonic, on 04/16/2009, -1/+1stop reading my thoouuuughts!
anyway...
indeed. it's a wild claim to assume that one thing necessarily has to do with another just because they're tangentially related. - PooderKing, on 04/16/2009, -0/+0:D > :(
