- BlackFlag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That's great. Not only will we never be able to retire, we'll also have to start working 80 hour work weeks just to be considered full-time.
Que bono? Who benefits? Not your average Joe. The only upshot is that maybe we here in the US will finally be able to better compete with the third world labor markets.
And I don't believe for a minute that this super-concentrated sleep will be anywhere near as restorative as normal sleep. You can only mess with nature so much. Our cancer rates will go up even more which should keep the pharmaceutical companies flush with chemotherapy cash.
Ever see 'Equilibrium'?
http://www.starpulse.com/Movies/Equilibrium/Summary/ - antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Won't this turn people into Reavers or sumptin'?
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think that Vietnamese guy is their guinea pig.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is old. White trash living in a double-wide outside of Fresno have been brewing up stuff like this for years.
- Saint3k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm not going anywhere near Reaver territory.
- Tynan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I could've used this in basic training. Speaking of which, I think the only real market for this would be in military applications (where 4 hour nights are something you give to soldiers when they have nervous breakdowns and need the "extra rest").
Speaking of which, you can go with 2 hours of sleep a night for at least a week without drugs. You just won't enjoy it very much. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can you just imagine how bad the world would be if people were awake 24/7? More crime, more energy costs, a lot of things.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, on a technological news' site like Digg, I didn't expect to read so many technophobic reactions. Thing are as simple as that, technology and science progresses, some choose to use it others choose to fear it calling the most natural thing -technologic and scientific evolution- unnatural. The thing is that being cautious is good being negative is really bad, i.e. some refuse to use e-mail because it is "a satanic invention" and messes up with the "natural order" that typical mail delivers. If things regarding technological evolution are so bad why are you using PCs at the first place, caves are more natural than your cement based homes
- HNIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can't we do this now with crack, jolt, and adult swim?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sleeping is extremely important; as it is the time where the human body heals itself. This drug will do more harm than good, as with 99% of the drugs on the market today.
Oh sure, we can survive with the two hours, but how much time will each pill-induced 2 hour sleep session take off the user's life expectency?
It is like taking your car in for a tune up or getting its filters replaced every 50k miles instead of the recommended 3-10k.
People are ignorant. - vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No thank you, I enjoy my sleep too much to give it up. Besides I think sleeping is a natural thing. Replacing it with a drug can never be a good idea.
- ericvdb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you think corporations won't abuse this...you're nuts.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing that is not "natural" is good. For example having life expectacy up to 80 years is not natural as in elder time life expectacy was 40 yeatrs. Cars are also unnatural so they are bad. Also PCs are unnatural as they suggest AI, they are not for good. Clothes are unnatural because other animals don't wear clothes ............
Weak up and understand it: IF HUMANS START TO DO NATURAL THINGS WILL CEASE TO EXIST. HUMANS ARE MADE TO MAKE UNATURAL THINGS, THAT"S WHY HE SURVIVED - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would totally be willing to take these sometimes. I LOVE sleep, and I LOVE dreaming, but there are times at school I could really use these to find more time to study. Right now I go to class, go straight to work (so I can afford to pay for college), and by the time I come home, I have to go to bed. With these things, I'd have more time to actually READ THE TEXTBOOK and do my homework. These things could definitely have GOOD USEFUL purposes. I wouldn't need them for weekends, but weekdays when I don't have TIME to sleep. . . these things would rock!
- jhurshman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's just great. Yet another way that industrial/technological society can force us into less-and-less-human shapes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uhhh...
Do we really want 90 hour weeks and no sleep? I'm never going on this. I LOVE my sleep. - Gremlinclr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But...I like sleep! :(
- anthony1124, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Murders will go up 200%
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I sleep any less than I do now, I'm gunna have to start keeping some one else up.
Now if they could just make a pill so I didn't have to masterbate so damn much. - grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the drug is already on the market... its called urISP.
- Gaferion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THIS IS A WONDER DRUG!!! Now I can stay up till 3AM playing WoW and get up at 7:30AM ... well, atleast without feeling like a piece of crap since I'm already doing that. :P
No one says you have to work the extra hours you are up ... and I doubt everyone would take this drug causing work hours to increase ... surely a workplace can't force someone to take a drug to hire them. So I think a more general use of this drug would be MORE FREE TIME!! WOOO HOOO /train
Just hope that side effects (atleast long term as in bodily damage ie liver) aren't too bad. - TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry to say it, but you can already do this without drugs.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This just has "bad idea" written all over it. Let's just go ahead and zombify ourselves in favor of not missing a single minute of CSPAN-2 coverage.
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Atleast I can look forward to a future of where everyone is walking around in a drug enduced coma and will be numb to the pains of society. Work work work, I can't wait. Thank you for this post though. I was pissed off about an unrelated subject, but when I read this and the comments I couldn't help but laugh. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing though. I think I am just losing more and more hope every day.
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chuck Norris doesn't sleep....He waits.
- DrumsNWhistles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting to me that this stimulant is put up on Digg as something to be celebrated, while at the same time there are many other posts on Digg extolling the evils of ADHD stimulant meds, which have been studied far more than this medication.
Modafinil is a stimulant medication. When you stop it, you crash and burn. If you think it's in any way good for you, think again. There's a REASON for sleep, and it goes far beyond turning your brain off.
Besides, who wants to be up 24 hours at a time? Isn't 15-16 per day quite enough? - splitfyre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No thanks. I'd rather stick to my 8 hour sleep pattern.
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wanna see this drug in global use. I wanna see people with red eyes burning their lives for minimum wage working 20 hours a day. I wanna see zombies corporate slaves in their suits dropping dead on the streets because of total exhaustion. Muhahaha...
Don't screw with nature! - theevilshiftkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I took Modanifil a few times and it just gave me a huge headache. They've got a lot of work to do...
- sbold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I take Provigil and love it! I work a rotating 24 hour schedule and that's not a problem...I can stay up 24 hours without much fatigue. However, when I get home from work, my wife goes to work and I'm left with my two daughters ages 4 and 2. they're a handful and don't allow daddy much nap time. The provigil keeps me awake and alert with no ill side effects (ala no-doz and other caffeines or worse). I still sleep when it's time. I guess what I'm saying is it sure beats driving into a tree with my kids because I'm exhausted. Life goes on whether you sleep or not. You'd be surprised how many people exist in a 24 hour world. So far no insanity...
- cable22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tynan has the right idea. As a former U.S. Marine infantryman, we got pushed to the limit all the time. Not to mention the long hours of sitting in fighting holes waiting for the bad guys. A drug like this could potentially save lives.
Less People Sleeping = Greater Security - plzdiekthx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Nothing that is not "natural" is good.'
Everything people characterize as "unnatural" is "natural." Humans don't exist outside of nature. Luddites cling to previous ideas of nature. Only eating uncooked food. Not treating infections with antibiotics. Dying from cancer. Taking a ***** in your water supply. Those are all things one does if one's idea of nature is "don't change things." - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This could be a good thing for those few days' where you want to stay up but can't.
but the idea of using something like this for day to day work.
No thanks. I like my bed time. - plzdiekthx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"People used to work only when the sun shined, then the light bulb become widely used and bam you can work even longer!"
Right. There are hordes of dead miners that would have killed for an eight-hour work day. They would have killed for a 12-hour work day. All well before the light bulb. Don't make things like that up; it demeans the hard work and sacrifices made by our ancestors. - lmarso, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1thank you for the pill. your pharmaceutical company is the greatest, kindest, bravest, most decent corporation I have ever known.
- sixsicsix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on.. spend the time and money on curing / stopping cancer. not this *****
- EdwinBubble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this changes our awake time from 16 hours to 20 hours a day, technically, that'd be like increasing our lifespan 25%.
Damn straight - the luddites can bite me. If I could reduce downtime to 4 hours I'd do it in a flash. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah there is the thing called CrystalMeth, Crank etc already. Ask your local drug dealer for detail.
- GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As with all time-saving technologies, we will not have more leisure time, we will be expected to produce more.
- mrsaturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Modafinil is truly a revolutionary stimulant. It does not produce the euphoric effects associated with traditional stimulants and therefore does not carry the same risks of addiction and tolerance. It already shows potential use for treating narcolepsy and ADHD. A University of Pennsylvania study suggests it may be useful in treating cocaine addiction as well. As far as side effects from the drug, only headaches showed a significant increase in occurrence (5%). However, the effects of sleep deprivation are well documented and can be very serious so I don't think we should start throwing out our beds just yet. I'd wait until there is a little more research on this substance first.
- HaroldHupmobile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who the hell wants this?
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"nothing has ever beaten a 8 hours solid sleeping... pills mills... will take one when hell freezes over and jesus skates on it..."
And before the cure for polio was invented, nothing had ever beaten polio either. Maybe they should have just given up. - zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...pressures of 24-hour society"
I'm sorry what pressures? - FuManchuX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Steve, don't forget antidepressants, booze and television... they aren't natural because they allow us to continue functioning as cogs in an industrial society that would have collapsed under its own soul-crushing psychological emptyness before now if we didn't have them... and are therefore bad.
- chrisc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'd love for a drug like this to exist but I don't count on it working right.
On a more serous note we still don't know why we need sleep... we know the benefits it has but no biologist will tell you that sleep is a requirement for life. We don't even know why we evolved sleep in the first place."
Darwin rolls in his grave... we EVOLVED sleep??? What the hell are you talking about? Sleep is a biological function, just like pissing, ***** and sex. - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like sleep too. Screw giving that up. There's nothing like being able to say "ahh, ***** it" and then be able to start the day over again, refreshed and anew.
Also I would not have a quick solution (eg nap) to having my eyelashes driving me nuts.
The body might only need so much sleep, but the mind and the spirit need it too, and they are not usually in total sync with the body they inhabit. - dig-dug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Frack this, I fail to see how in the world this can be considered a good thing.
- boazg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but coffee was invented a long time ago. old.
- shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on.. spend the time and money on curing stopping cancer. not this *****
just think how much more research they could do to stop cancer if they didn't have to sleep as much and were still just as vigilant?
These drugs are not for people to play more WoW with, though they will be abused for those things, nor do they produce any euphoria or high like your meth/coke/etc or have the negative physical effects of those drugs - as in you're not going to roll over on your infant and suffocate them to death because you're too stoned on meth to comprehend anything or rob someone or blow someone to pay for your next coke fix because the chemistry in your brain has been altered to crave the high..because there isn't one, RTFA.
they are for people who have sleeping disorders or have multiple jobs and simply don't have enough time already to get healthy sleep - these people right now are deprived of sleep and their cognitive/reflex abilities are hampered. Using these meds, the same people can get the same amount of sleep but instead be mentally and physically alert. - valis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*shakes head* There's a fool born every minute, and some become researchers for pharmaceutical companies.
10 years after the drug is released: Unexplained mass psychosis ravages downtown New York, killing tens of thousands. Pharmaceutical companies argue, "It's not the drug. It's all those damn violent video games." -
