- Floodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I tried the dictionary one but found that sometimes my sentences didn't make any gyrovague
- maldrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16To summarize:
Eat healthy
Exercise
Challenge your mind
Occasionally mess up your routines. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I've been using the dictionary one for about a year and it works very well. Don't like fish but I guess I'll do something else. Not a fan of crossword puzzles but sudoku is allright.
I just brushed my teeth with the other hand, that was very disorienting. - Salmonax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"It is not an intelligence-boosting formula likely to impress an Oxbridge don: watching Countdown, playing Sudoku, remembering telephone numbers and **taking a shower with your eyes closed**."
In other news, hundreds of visitors of popular tech-news website Digg.com are turning up dead of apparent shower-related injuries... cleverer authorities suspect foul play. - nads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Totally agree with this. I aint kidding when I say, the more I use the calculator on my PC, the more stupid I am becoming - I'm not challenging my brain. BOYCOTT CALC.EXE!
- adizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12So how many people switched their mouse to the other hand like me after they read this article...
- doherty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Don't you mean "comparative"? You probably shouldn't criticize the grammar or spelling of others until you check your own...
- nads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lol, Dyke is Greg Dyke the former controller"chief exec" of BBC now wash your mouth with soap :)
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11That's what she said! Badumpum!
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Watch countdown....lol. id rather be poked for an hour
- SinNombre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I tired to digg your comment while using the mouse with my other hand and I messed up! Oh, well...
- eamonman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For one week:
Don't watch TV.
Don't watch pron.
There. People will automatically find things to do that will make them more smart/clever than what they would have been doing. - Cameleopard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=cleverer
- SinNombre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Bugmento got me into the registered portion of the site - the guy is a media consultant who got himself into some trouble... but that's all way off subject (you little perv!)
LOL - rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There seems to be nothing extraordinary about the list, except that you're doing things you're not accustomed to. I'll recommend that anytime!
Side note: the first "related article" was "30.01.2003: Dyke under fire in BBC online row." Unfortunately, it wanted me to be registered. Does anybody know what dyke it was, and are there pictures? - unholy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Article: "However, one man who had gone out on a stag night the evening before the second test found his score 20 per cent down - proving that alcohol damages mental function."
Surely that doesn't PROVE alcohol damages mental function. I would say it's the hangover that makes thinking a more painful process for a limited time. That said, I'm sure the long-term effects of large quantities of alcohol consumption aren't GREAT for you, either. - DutchessofPadua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5''Cos the comparitive would be "more clever" and not "cleverER."
Erm, 'cleverer' might sound silly, but it is a word. 'Comparitive', on the other hand, isn't. - hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My Get Smart guide:

Seriously though, the more you think the smarter you'll be. The more different things you try to wrap your brain around, the smarter you'll be. The brain is a muscle, relatively speaking, and improves with use. Also, like a muscle, a well-worked brain copes with disease and injury better than otherwise. - YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A week? Screw that! Why take a week to do what I can do in 3 days?
Wednesday
Select unfamiliar words from the dictionary and work them into conversation with strangers at yoga class
Thursday
Have oily fish while taking a brisk walk and memorizing shopping list
Friday
Take a different route to work with eyes closed - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And here's a study that talks about how bad caffiene is for you. http://thestressoflife.com/caffiene.htm
I've done quite a bit of personal research into this and, basically, if you take caffiene every day it messes with your head.
Caffiene tampers with your brain chemistry and it leads to you not getting adequate alpha sleep (the deep sleep that occurs after REM), which leads to fatigue. This, in turn, makes you wake up tired and then you reach for another caffienated beverage. Now you're hooked.
Over time, this leads to much higher levels of stress and can also lead to depression.
Research has shown that both stress and depression cause memory problems and clouding of mental faculties.
I love coffee, but I'm not going to drink it again after what I've learned. - ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course it's different: It's like writing an essay with a spellchecker, you never learn how to do it yourself!
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol: "However, one man who had gone out on a stag night the evening before the second test found his score 20 per cent down - proving that alcohol damages mental function."
Sounds more like about lack of sleep / hangover and obviously just not caring about the study. - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seumas see countdown here
http://www.thecountdownpage.com
When I saw countdown I thought "cool Keith Olberman."
And when this came up "id rather be poked for an hour" the words loofah, falafel, and O'Reilly popped into my head. - dstart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They forgot to mention: Drink more water.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think there was a typo/mixup
Friday should have been:
Drink alcohol and talk to people you don't know. - adizzle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6haha, I had to do a google search on that crazy word.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More for the list:
* Learn another language (programming languages are probably not as good, but still effective).
* Learn morse code, brail or sign language.
* Learn a (new) musical instrument or to read musical notation (TAB doesn't count). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You may find switching hard at first, but don't give up.
Honestly, stick at it and you'll get "good enough" that you won't notice within a week.
You may never "as good" with your off than your on hand, but mousing isn't brain surgery. - FooledByRamen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cameleopard wins this round. you guys should really make use of common resources.... LIKE THE DICTIONARY.... before you say a word doesn't exist.
- 4tygames, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No more buttered scones for me today! I'm off to play the Grand Piano!
- newtbrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2THE GET SMARTER GUIDE
Saturday
Brush your teeth with your 'wrong' hand and take a shower with your eyes closed.
Sunday
Do the crossword or Sudoku puzzle in your Sunday paper and take a brisk walk.
Monday
Have oily fish for dinner, and either cycle, walk or take the bus into work.
Tuesday
Select unfamiliar words from the dictionary and work them into conversations.
Wednesday
Go to yoga, Pilates or a meditation class, and talk to someone you don't know.
Thursday
Take a different route to work; watch Countdown or Brainteaser.
Friday
Avoid caffeine or alcohol; memorise your shopping list. - mckinnej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prefer the method that was reported a while back...SEX! It is much more fun that all that crap.
- lacour1234, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Just by eliminating alcohol you will boost your cleverness a few points.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And we all have to remember of course that "British" has ONE "t".
Hmm, do you think "Scotland" is a suburb of London too maybe??
Or that the city of "Wales" is a few miles outside of London perhaps?
Or that the whole of the U.K consists solely of "London" and surrounding boroughs? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's all about doing something new to make your brain work. I read a good article about this at the following link:
http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2005/08/blow_your_own_m.html - cgwas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or just get Brain Age for the DS.
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because its one of the simplest ways to teach your brain how to not rely on optical input for every little thing. Also, you're not being distracted by the (usually) bright room and can meditate on other matters with the gentle sounds of running water in the background...
- hodgesg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Friday night, avoid alcohol.... I didn't jsut spend a week in the lab to then be deprived of having ANY fun whatsoever. No thanks, I'm doing alright so far.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does coding random programs exercise my mind or does it really aggrivate it and cause stress?
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AVOID alcohol and caffeine?!?! AGGGHHHHHHHHHHH! NOOOOOooooooo.......
- noobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2aaand you measure cleverness how? anyway, fish=brainfood, walking=excercise, halthier, yep this seems to mak you maybe 1% cleverer by my standards. my unfamiliar word? cleverer!
- zenzenkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe using your non-dominant hand for other "activities" that provide more immediate positive feedback could improve your IQ even more, assuming you don't get stuck in a feedback loop
- hwh43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3but they're bbc. i dont trust 'em.
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"When the production team did trial runs among 15 volunteers, who each followed a 'get smarter' regime for a week, they expected their guinea pigs would be about 10 per cent cleverer at the end of it. What they found was that some performed up to 40 per cent better than in the initial assessment. However, one man who had gone out on a stag night the evening before the second test found his score 20 per cent down - proving that alcohol damages mental function."
15 Volunteers is hardly a representative or significant sample. Horrendous research, please, let psychologists (the real researchers) do the research! - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Cleverer" may be a word, but it is "improper englitched" (sic) grammar to say "more cleverER". It is proper grammar to say either cleverer or more clever, but not more cleverer. So even if it proves they know such a word exists since they've been studying their dictionary, it also proves that they are still stupid and lacking in education... :)
- mvdde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I was going to say something clever. But I forgot what it was. What was this article about again?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This study is 100% correct.
I do all of these things every week already, and I'm a brainiac!
BTW, IMO, cryptic crosswords are the best puzzle to do to increase brain power. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes!
- MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard on some science show recently that the short-term affects of alcohol are that it interferes with sleep and good sleep is needed for the brain to remember stuff that you learned that day.
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i always take a shower with my eyes closed. helps me brainstorm. but also causes problems when a frisky girlfriend wants to sneek in and join in the shower. freaked me out opening my eyes to see my girlfriend standing there. shes silent like a ninja.
