- myckleh, on 10/14/2007, -4/+80When did 55% become "often" and not "half the time"? Especially with a margin of error, that seems like result of random guessing to me.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42Awesome! Maybe I can get into Gaydar 101 at Liberty University. Phrenology was full : /
- fluidfoundation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37its all in the hips.... its all in the hips!
- Bhatch514, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37If pron has taught me anything, it is that all girls are gay 100% of the time if put in the correct situation with the correct amount of alcohol.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25No. As said by Locutus. This is junk science.
- beerandcoffee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Wow, a test population of eight?
Buried. - scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24so you're saying i have about a 50/50 shot to guess if someone's straight/gay? who would have thunk it. LOL
- UncleCrapper, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26Said with a lisp?
- suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20""Studies like ours are raising questions about the value of the military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy," Johnson said. "If casual observers can determine sexual orientation with minimal information, then the value in concealing this information certainly appears questionable." That's not the only questionable thing about that policy :P
- Unclickable, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18it's a fabulous study
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16...swing it?
- Bubba3236, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17link: http://tinyurl.com/2myr9v
- vornan19, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14So when I dance for my cat I'm gay?
Woooo! Watch me swing it, kitty! - mlagana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16i'm glad some studies are tackling the IMPORTANT ISSUES
- Mapeki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I find it sad that I actually laughed a little at that.
- nathanwalker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Oh wow. They can tell if a guy is gay 65% of the time and women 55%? Out of EIGHT people?
Buried... whatever happened to the scientific process? - Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -9/+20Silly science.
- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I thought it was all about the foot tapping?
- AntonX2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9What a load of bull. A sample size of 4 gay people? Even in my intro statistics class this would have been tossed out as pure trash. This is exactly what's wrong with scientific studies today: we throw money at everyone who has a half-baked idea. Thank god no public money was wasted on this.
- Markpdotcom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I'll see your office clip and raise you one of these! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q8-t_BFxGg Still makes me laugh after seeing it for the 20th time! :)
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yay! Let's take Uncyclopedia, make it less interesting, put lots of ads everywhere and put it on a domain that's a typo of wikipedia that no one would ever make! Then lets make a page with Sex on it that isn't funny and pretend it's wikipedia and post the link on digg! Ah, I can feel the money rolling in already.
- forteller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8What?
- saleem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8obligatory office clip, dwight and his gaydar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJQqjl1IV5k
- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Lol. Social clique is also determined by this. I can show you the difference between a football player and a hiphop/rap/wigger kid anyday JUST by how they walk.
- thegoodsteer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Science says your fortune is: You're probably gay!
- boredsam, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11This just in: Gay people act gay.
- Virak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Homosexuality is an attraction to people of the same sex. If you're just ***** them because you're horny and there's nobody else to ***** and not because you're attracted to them, then you're not necessarily gay. Keep dreaming, though.
- myills, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8"...they correctly categorized the sexual orientation of men with more than 60 percent accuracy, but their categorization of women did not exceeded chance."
I find it interesting that perception of men being gay was higher than perception of women. That might suggest something interesting about gender-ized roles in our society. Possibly that men may have more gendered characteristics than women. - xjscrf291, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Absolute JUNK science..at it's worst.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Unfortunately, you're not alone.
- lokipro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Prince is as gay as it gets... and he's heterosexual, and former major league baseball player Billy Bean is at straight-acting as they come, oh what? he's GAY... This just in: ignorant people act ignorant.
- drmangrum, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8And you can tell a lot about a person by studying the bumps on their head.
- brooklynboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+61 flaw and one idiotic statement made in the story:
Flaw - There is no room for BISEXUAL orientation. This is by far the toughest one to guess. I've dated a bisexual woman and had no clue until she decided to reveal it to me months later. Very tough one.
Idiotic comment within the article - "...more comprehensive policies may be required to protect gays against discrimination based on their sexual orientation."
PROTECT?! What the hell does that mean, PROTECT gays? What about protecting ME from the gays who discriminate against ME? This is just a stupid statement and implies that gays and lesibans are inferior in their ability to protect themselves.
And specifically, the article was talking about discrimination of gays / lesbians in the military, saying that because of these findings "don't ask / don't tell" wont protect gays because you can "see" that these people are gay and "might" want to harm them.
Please, stop the idiocy. Gays, Lesbians, Bixsexuals and even ... dare I say it!?... H E T E R O S E X U A L S are discriminated against equally in different parts of society, and yes, it depends on what the majority population's sexual orientation is. - diblasio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't they sell gaydar at Sharper Image?
- quisph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_significance
- supaklaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That it's more important for men to designate their competition as "gay"... ie. demeaning them to seem "inferior"... as in any online video game anyone has ever played where everyone yells "gay" 24/7... men want to claim they are more masculine than every other guy and take all the bitches for themselves... basic ape behavior.
- RandomJacks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I am a skinny guy but don't know if I have some hip shaking when I walk. How do I find this out? I have to know if I am still straight or if science makes me gay..
- burnerjack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Recruiter "Are either of you gay?"
Bill Murray "Flaming?"
--from the movie Stripes - shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4my gaydar has been pretty much accurate for both men and women. the chicks are tough to call, because at any time they can jump the fence and play for the other team for a while if they are bored.
Actually, I think everyone is born bisexual, not "gay". So hetero and homosexuality is simply learned. - Kyrgizion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Nahh, it's in the flick of the wrist!
- Jelfish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's usually more difficult for a non-"gay"-acting gay man to come out. This study was based on volunteers, so I would hazard to guess that they have a bit of an adverse selection problem. I think this study only furthers the incorrect assumption that because gay men "act gay," men who don't "act gay" are more likely not gay ("heteronormativity"). So you can tell with slightly over 50/50 certainty that a gay-acting man is gay. That really isn't saying much at all.
The fact is, our culture pushes us to believe that we fit in black-and-white catagories, that we should like one thing and find other things disgusting. If it were not for this, I think a lot of people would be bisexual. I, for one, don't find either hetero or ***** sex (of either gender) disgusting. It's just sex. - Ninh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's true, I read about it in Phrenology Monthly.
Would you walk for me? - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Football players are a subset of hiphop/rap/wigger kids
- burnerjack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Maybe so, but its still FABULOUS!
- raada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Isn't this what the Nazis tried to do? Measure people's bodies to see if they were gay, jewish or belong to a certain race...
Sick science. - supaklaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of Patton Oswald talking about walking around a campus with Jeanine Garafolo... he said he was convinced everyone thought they were a lesbian couple and he was the ugly bulldyke top in the relationship... when he knew JG would probably spank his ass.
- alexanEmpire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Define "Gug" for us please.
- Voltagensis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Fact is, most people don't put their sexuality on display outright and the subtleties are too minor to suggest anything. The people you think are the straightest are sometimes not. This research is meaningless and just reinforces dangerous stereotypes towards people who really just want to live their lives undisturbed.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Another way of putting this:
Say you have 100 people lined up. 5 of them have a book of matches in their back pocket. Now, solely by looking at them, try picking out one of the the 5 that have the matches. Since there is no way of telling, you should only have a 5% chance of guessing correctly. - AoSDFA, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Lemme get this straight: I can get grant money to do nothing more than "investigate" stereotypes? And it doesn't matter if the results show no better than chance, I can still publish the "confirmation" of the stereotypes? Woo hoo. Now I just gotta figure out which stereotypes are ok to investigate and which are still taboo. Wait! That can be my first project! Here, lemme see what the digg responses are to this proposal. Remember, it's for science: Should I take buckets of grits and pork rinds to a NASCAR track or buckets of fried chicken and malt liquor to an NBA game? Either way, be sure to line up at my booth when you see it. It's not (insert category here)-ism, it's for science!
