- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Clearly this research is important in proving that 1 month old babies can't safely drive cars. Many lives will be saved as a result.
- SweetChuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Sure it's interesting, but come on. No detail about how the images were manipulated, or on how we know what babies perceive visually, or why this research is important?
- VSKBadCRC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"A group of visual researchers have come up with a method that alters pictures so that they look like what babies see."
Yes, that would be called Gaussian blur. - xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11How about you link to the actual story instead of linking to Gizmodo who links to the story....good job there killer...
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'd feel safer with a 1 month old driving towards me than a 90 year old. Seniors should have mandatory driving tests every 5 years after 65.
- short, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Nice story, but I taught my son to stick his tongue out on his first day of life. There's no way he could have known what I was doing if his vision matched that blurry example they show for a newborn.
Here's the story (if you care...):
My newborn son was having trouble latching on to breastfeed - his tongue was getting in his way. One of the nurses suggested that we stick our tongue out at him to get him to move his tongue out of the way, so I did just that -- and he started to stick his tongue out. Later on I left the hospital to take a shower and send out his first picture to friends and family. When I returned, upon seeing me, he stuck his tongue out. He may have recognized me by scent, but my wife reported that he didn't stick his tongue out while I was gone. - ke4roh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just read (in ISBN 0789202751) that a dozen people played a game with an 8 or 12 hour old baby wherein one person stuck out his tongue slowly until the child did the same, then they passed the baby around to all the other people, and when the baby got back to the tongue-sticker-outer, baby's tongue came out again. Seems the vision is not quite as bad as suspected. I think the pictures are more representative of comprehension.
- Mischa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8My vision reverts back to baby status depending on how many drinks I've had. Until I get "Baby Faced".
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I guess thats about right, seems like at about 8 or so weeks is when babies really start to tell who their parents are...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have an amazing archive of images from a scientific study I did for what babies actually see in the dark. Until I saw this digg article I assumed I just left the lens cap on, but now I may have stumbled onto something....
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I thought they could tell you from birth by smell. Mine's 6 weeks old and can definitely tell myself and my wife apart.
- Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4>I'd feel safer with a 1 month old driving towards me than a 90 year old. Seniors should >have mandatory driving tests every 5 years after 65.
Never going to happen with a big section of the (voting) population over 65 in the next few years...
Nothing worst than cruising the highway at 70 only to find an elder going 35 in the fast lane!!!!!!!!! - mssnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://tinyeyes.com/tinyeyes/
Direct link. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In the scheme of science, it may not be as important as, say, a cure for cancer. However, they know what makes the eye work fairly well now, so this image is an aggregate of the data. Factors include cone/rod count for color accuity, iris movement for focus, etc. Agreed it should be listed, but at least now its here.
- bangelo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So after 6 months babies start to see color? Just look at m-i-c-k-e-y's feet.
- egometry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Odd. According to this, I'm only 8 weeks old when I'm not wearing glasses.
- Mastershredder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is actually really cool. I have an infant over 9 months old, but I remember when she was really little and struggled to get things into focus and make out faces. Now I see why :)
- johnnybravoh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Hrm... I'm a little dissapointed. I fully expected to see some lactating mammaries...
- drgnmstrnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude, at 6 weeks we develop jpg artifacts in our vision? WOW that IS an important discovery ;)
- scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Take the original image and do a Gaussian blur with radius (1-exp(-n)) where n is the baby's age in months.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the comments on the article:
"just more proof for my theory that abortion should be legal until 3 months. that way you get some idea of what the kid will be like.
also, it may be ugly."
Greatest. Comment. Ever. - tsunamibomb, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1cute!
http://reborn-babydolls.com/ - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After getting really drunk, everything looks like the 8 weeks pic.
- EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes it is true. You obviously have not dealt with a baby on any meaningful level. They can locate based of sound and smell, they can differentiate between light and dark so that they can see shadows and vague outlines of people and things close to them. Just think about what calms a baby faster: “seeing” their parent in room or holding the infant close to your chest so it can hear a heart beat. It’s a shame, verging on criminal, that people like you with little to no understanding of such things have dealt with babies or may even be a parent yourself.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no wonder i can't remember much from when i was a baby. everything probably looked all fuzzy.
this lets me kno that i dont have to buy an expensive mickey mouse doll for Junior when i can give my him a pillow with 2 patches for eyes and it'll look the same. At least for the first few months.
and it'd probably better for me to talk to Junior, as opposed to just peeking my head over the crib and playing peek-a-boo and stuff. To him, i probably look like everybody else who sees him. so making a a connection through sound might be better. i think. *shrugs* - Quasimondo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, try this: http://web.archive.org/web/20010925053906/http://www.tinyeyes.com/
It looks like that site already exists since 2001 with the same content... - onelove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had no idead you couldnt see very well until you were 6 months
- Phlag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They definitely need to explain the method and their reasons for believing that this is indeed how babies see. Explanation, reproduction, and methodology are what science is all about.
But, to their credit, the "About Us" page does reveal that the creators have suitable and reputable credentials for this topic.
Regardless, no digg from me. The fact that this links to some blog doesn't help either. - lazyron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mirrors anyone? looks like the site has been dugg...
- zubandude16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OH! big accomplishment!! what did they prove with this? think of the money they could have used to fund something more worthwhile, like cancer research like someone said earlier. so you can see like a baby...big deal. people are dieing and your excited cuz you know how a baby sees? w-o-w oh well i think its dumb.
- dealunion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ridiculous, Tommstein says right "How the hell do they know what a newborn sees? "
- AdverseE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is ridiculous. I digged it twice.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You forgot to ask the babies!
- Quasimondo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh I just had to rebuild this in Flash. If you have a webcam you can try it live:
http://www.quasimondo.com/archives/000626.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How the hell do they know what a newborn sees? Did the ask one to make a drawing for them?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Go suck a dick bitch
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder what sex looks like through a baby's eyes
- nitefallz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This is a crock of *****. This is saying babies are essentially blind for the first 4 weeks, everyone who's ever dealt with a baby knows that isn't true.
- rolypolyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This story sounds really apocryphal... it doesn't help that the link goes to tinyeyes.com (I don't get the aura of peer-reviewed work here). Maybe tinyeyes.com is a subsidiary of LensCrafters?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4If the first think I saw was a giant mouse at 6 months old I think I would crap my pants. hmm, that might explain some things about babies too. I know, I'll get millions of dollars to figure out what makes babies crap their pants. It will be BRILLIANT!!
- k4zz4m, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1when the baby is born, his/her vision is inverted because the baby is carried upside down; also that explains why when babies tried to reach out for something, they often miss their target. Therefore, the site is totally bogus
- catpounce004, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This is total *****. I saw and described the hospital room and the outside view (accurately) to my mother. My vision was crystal clear, full color, capable of seeing all the details. No digg.
- kristin364, on 10/12/2007, -27/+9Idiot
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -42/+12Soo.... it's blurry with less color. It took research and time to do this?

What is Digg?
