- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35i guess this means wal-mart will have a lot of dead employees in a few years..
- slickricks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Walmart employees will be dead in a few years because they're already 85, not because they are depressed.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Sure, some people call it 'lashing out', I just call it my secret to a longer life...bitch.
- Rynoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20".... the grumpy stay fit."
NO! John C. Dvorak will live FOREVER! - mtvkilledusall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I know faking happiness at my job makes me depressed.
- DougPenn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19SCREW ALL OF YOU - THIS STORY IS STUPID.
Ahhhh I just added a year onto my life. - lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"How the @#%$% can I help you?"
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20please, don't bring him/her into this..
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well if I did show my true feelings, I would not only be unemployed but Prob be arrested or shot a few mins later.
- dissident, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11the secret to long life is internal happiness, no matter how it's acquired. It's not being stressed out and negative. I can tell you this from experience. Your emotional health has a much larger effect on your physical health then you realize.
just ask yourself why you get pissed off? Is it just your selfish ego ranting for no particular reason other then to try and be heard? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12no, they are already depressed and suicidal.. that's why they're called emo..
- Rynoh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13
Wait, no ! All those whiny Emo kids will live forever! NO! - saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If I showed my true emotions I'd have women filing me for sexual abuse all the time. I guess it's either that or live a shorter life. :(
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"you cannot convince people of it with logic"
god and logic bite each other. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. I didn't live or talk with anyone before this life because I wasn't live before I was alive.
Also, this is a big reason why women live longer. I mean, this and the fact that men take the most dangerous jobs, work a greater percentage of their lives than women do and have more stressful jobs than women do. It pays to be a woman, statistically. - Rynoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8
no more jolly old people?! - kumfortableenum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How about people in service jobs don't live as long because they are paid less and don't have access to quality health care. I'm going to stereotype, but people spending their life working in the service field are under educated, over worked and under payed. I am willing to bet that based on these issues there is a higher level of alcohol abuse, drug use, smoking, obesity, and television watching. It isn't because they "have" to be nice that they become depressed and possibly die earlier, it's because they realize that they will never amount to anything. Ha! I'm an ass!
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7getting pissed off is also an outlet for emotions. Keep it inside, and some other body part gets pissed off. Better to vent it.
- gh3tto, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11and wear a condom too
- hadiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Either A) repress your true emotions and supposedly live a shorter life, or B) tell you boss/co-workers/customers exactly what you think of them all the time and never work anywhere for longer than 6 months to a year...
Hmmm I'll choose A. - Atroz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"Don't repress your true emotions" - unless expressing them to the wrong person is likely to shorten your life.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't, so Dammit, what are you supposed to do? Oh oh, now I'm getting upset.
;-) - dfg59, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8They say that people "who are in contact with the public more often" fall ill more often than others. Could it be that contact with more people results in a better chance to catch colds, diseases, etc? What was their control group? This seems like a ridiculous study.
An increased heart rate != falling ill. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Ok... I'll start. I don't like most black women. They are loud, obnoxious, talk during movies, and overall just bitches.
- thepotoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Here's a thought:
What if these people are more likely to get sick not because of some stress BS, but because they are exposed to all kind of diseases every day?
Think about it: If you sit in your cubicle, you're interacting with a few people. If you're a flight attendent, it's a few hundred.
TFA is about call centre operators' heart beats; tho, which kind-of blows that theory. And I'd kind of like a litte larger of a study done before I believe everything. - 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Secret to a long life- Don't repress your true emotions"
Spock would disagree and I'm inclined to listen to Spock. - dnder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hmmm, that's funny.....I didn't know you can catch depression from other people. It's not that they are exposed to more diseases you fool. It's psychological.
- jefree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hate customer service acting people because it is so obvious and so fake. I have one more person ask me for my frequent rewards club play along card I'm going to tell them to take their fukcing card program and shove it!
How's that for letting some emotion out. Actually, the battlefield is all inside your head. Just remember that you are in control of your mind. Not god. Not the idiot customer. Not the boss. Not the TV (i could be wrong here). And not the customer service faker. - dukem72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This goes to any past or present employee of Kinko's now FedEx blah-blah blah. Screw all those customers telling you that their project needs to be done now because they are the biggest customer that branch has.
Also, what about this business cards are not really the color I saw on my screen, screw them too.....OOOhhh yeah what about the MS Word document is a professional layout program.
Ahhhhhhhh stop the burn, those dang memories of my youth. And they always told me I should be more polite screw them. - sroske, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Repression and suppression are not the antithesis of expression. It is possible to feel and acknowledge personal emotions without expressing silly selfish drama and childish jerk reaction. Learning how to navigate negative emotions and seeing how stupid they are, not beautiful, is the way to freedom from suffering and the personal hell commonly called normal life. Some parts of Western psychology make great effort to claim that it is normal to be an immature *****. It is not. A normal person can grow, change, and, yes, exercise sefl-control for the benefit of everyone--including their own self.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is why in some situations assaulting someone isn't as much of a crime as it's made out to be. Sometimes people can antagonize and rub the other person up the wrong way.
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well I know that when I worked "public" jobs I fell 'ill' a lot, but that's because most of us didn't want to go to work! We called it vacation since you otherwise get none at most jobs like that.
- amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There is a time and a place for everything.
Be professional and courteous while at work yet allow time to relax when the situation allows.
It's all about balance. - Junman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4By that token, American Airlines flight attendants are going to fly a long long time ...hmmppphh
- Wiggles2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're right, not all black women are rude, loud, and obnoxious.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thats what I was thinking. We fall ill more often cause we have to be around the public all day, most of whom are dirty.
- Zabbawack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah i work at a bank.....So i am probably taking years off my life.
- ironbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been around for 50+ years. It's certainly my experience that gay men who are true and authentic to themselves in the world are happier and live longer. It says a lot for being who you are and not hiding from personal truths, whatever your sexual orientation.
- Rudy246, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I usually do express my real emotions, but sometimes I just keep my mouth shut depending on the subject. I won't LIE about anything, but sometimes I just choose to not say anything.
But it really depends on the situation I guess. Sometimes shutting up can do wonders =P
-Rudy - The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** you you ***** *****. etc ect. Nope, I feel the same.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You GO umm.. boy.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gay men are not allowed to be older than 40. No-one knows what happens to them after that.
- paolonorte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Reference the Chappelle sketch "When Keepin it Real is a BAD idea."
- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great Haplo, tell that to the guy I caught stabbing his lamp with a screw driver when the lightbulb broke while he was changing it. Some people are just biologically wired to have a short fuse.
- Tonyisbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great! now i have to appologize to my g/f about being right, damn you doc, i like having the emotional level of a rock...
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fact: women are more emotional than men.
Women live longer.
So that got me thinking - do gay men live longer than straight men? - Wiggles2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And which professions would those be mightymouse? This isn't just pertaining to service jobs. I think most people who aren't rich have to work for someone, and if you work for someone you always have to watch what you say. You clearly can't say what you are thinking to customers, but you also can't say what you think to your boss(es) or your co-workers for that matter. Then you get home and yell at the wife and kids because they are the only ones you can be genuine/frank to anymore.
Have you ever tried telling your co-worker that her perfume makes you want to vomit, or telling your boss that he should not be so arrogant? Sadly, we live in a society where there are so many behavioral constraints, that is makes me wonder how truly 'free' we are.
There are basically 2 solutions to the problem, in my view. Either we can repress our frankness, or the objects of our frankness can not take it personally and not punish you for it (and we would have to do the same when we are on the receiving end).
I'd rather live in a world where the latter is the norm. - unsolicited, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Happiness? Quite simple. Practice Altruism.
- Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with the conclusion. But, the point is moot. Business is about making money from paying customers. Employees are just a means to that end. So, there's no way that a business is going to allow an employee to alienate a paying customer by calling him/her on bad behavior. Sure, you may get away with it if the customer was way out of line & you've got a sympathetic manager. But, that's the exception, not the rule.
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a difference between a working out your heart and burning it out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone dealing directly with the public would do well to learn how to meditate.
"Mindfulness In Plain English by Ven. Henepola Gunaratana"

Once the ego is tamed and the monkey mind is under control, anger doesn't come to the surface as easily and it becomes easier to deal with the verbal and mental b.s. people throw at you on a daily basis. -
