- Spoomeister, on 11/01/2007, -0/+12It's clever stuff, and has great potential, but note that it's for cancers caused by infection, not a way to treat ANY cancer, by treating all of them as if they were infectious diseases.
From the article: "Nearly 20 percent of human cancers worldwide are caused by preexisting virus infections. Prime examples are liver cancer (caused by hepatitis B and C viruses), cervical cancer (caused by human papillomaviruses) and certain lymphomas (caused by the Epstein-Barr virus). "
I know I'm being pedantic, but the title and description of the digg submission made it sound like some miracle discovery for all cancers. It isn't. It's a potential approach for an estimated 1/5th of them. Damn good, nothing to scoff at, but still. - inactive, on 11/02/2007, -6/+13so? just like the latest aids treatments all the drug companies will do is use their cure/prevention findings in order to find a way to "maintain" health by having you come in for treatments once every 6 months or by giving you pills.
- sleeknerve, on 11/01/2007, -4/+9Cool, they have cured cancer, for the 8th time
- Elliuotatar, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5Yep, looks like they banned most foods with B17 all right!
http://home.bluegrass.net/~jclark/b17_foods.htm
Rasberries, Fava Beans, Lentils, Lima Beans, Macadamia nuts, all banned! - Bravecombo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Now onto more deadly matters.........the cupcakes that are killing the children...........
- capiCrimm, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4it's like a slot machine, you just keep trying until the money pours out.
- superdoofus, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3and too bad that cancer isn't contagious, because this would be a ***** GOLDMINE.
meh. if it works, in twenty years there will be high-margin otc's with 2% active ingredients available for maintenence. i think i smell the chefs upselling the more profitable wines to make up for sub-par entrees. - dext3r, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3do you work for 1cure4cancer.com, apricotpower.com or 1awesomeb17site.com ?
- dash1185, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Actually, it is ...
- MasterSharma, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Of course, they are trying to run a business, and they only have so long till generic brands come out and be stealing their cash
- rey1867, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2cancer ? wasn't there an article a couple of days ago that fixed it ?
- dext3r, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Man, i used to think this stuff was news. Its not. Every week there is a "new breakthrough" in curing either Cancer or AIDS. I used to be like "oh, *****, cool, we wont have to worry about that ***** anymore," but nothing ever comes out of these "breakthroughs". Until I see "All cancers cured for sure. Really. Yeah, its gone. For sure. Totally," I'm starting to care less and less.
- MuadDave, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I'm no 'Nucular Physicist' (but I did minor in physics) - I think they mean Rhenium-188, not Rhenium-18. See this link for decay/half life info: http://ie.lbl.gov/toi/nuclide.asp?iZA=750188
- Quicksilver4648, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Cool, if it kills cancer then I will digg it.
- willis77, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Cancer is a blanket term for a heterogeneous class of diseases. On behalf of the cancer research community, I apologize we have not met your timetable and expectations for curing thousands of subtypes of cancer with a one-time-use pill.
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -3/+5PLoS one is not exactly a peer-reviewed journal...
- SohailKhanifar, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2There is an article every 2 months on Digg explaining a new way of tackling cancer, aids, obesity, etc.
- scaaven2, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3cool?
- MrPeach, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Yeah, really cool just like that HPV vaccine thing. Oh, wait, they are the same friggin thing. So I guess this isn't the "first time" it's been done, eh?
- edebolt, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2there is still a tremendous economic incentive to come up with a cure for Cancer. Whoever could bring that to the masses would be fantastically wealthy before the 7 year patent protection wore off.
- Sharky35, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2The Black Helicopters are on to you!
- Sharky35, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Yeah, cause Albert Einstein was such a great Medical Doctor?
- HappyDonut, on 11/01/2007, -2/+3You know what angers me?
This is fantastic stuff, I mean of course it is still in development and all this research, but it is news. This should be up there, not some stupid kid that cries about getting pummeled by a guy on a bike. It's ridiculous. - amigabill, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1For the first time??!! Haven't pharmas been marketing a vaccine for cervical cancer and trying to get it made a mandatory item on childhood inoculation checklists for a while now? I know I've seen the commercials for it on TV a bunch of times. It targets 3 or 4 forms of some virus, which are most likely to cause this type of cancer, which is even mentioned in this article. I'd imagine al that means this article is not talking abotu the "first time"... It's a great thing to be researching, and I hope this brings amazing results to those who suffer, but please try to be accurate...
- chaosium, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1"Doctors recommend eating 7-10 apricot seeds per day"
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2002-04/10185 ...
Apricot pits or seeds contain cyanogenic (often spelled cyanogenetic)
glycosides which release cyanide when digested. Therefore, you could
conceivably be poisoned by eating too many apricot seeds. The "American Medical
Association Handbook for Poisonous and Injurious Plants" (1985, AMA: Chicago)
notes that people have been poisoned by eating apricot seeds. Livestock are
also commonly poisoned because hundreds of plant species contain cyanogenic
glycosides including sorghum species, white clover, vetch, hydrangea, arrow
grass, corn, flax, lima beans, leaves and pits of Prunus species (cherries,
apricots, peaches) and apple seeds. The cyanogenic glycoside in apricot is
amygdalin and is the active ingredient in the bogus cancer drug laetrile. - ramjet10, on 11/02/2007, -3/+3you are a ***** moron, have you even looked at PlosOne? Its open access, thats the only difference.
- lukasmach, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Except I tought that cancer already has been cured:
http://www.praguepost.com/P02/2002/20612/news2.php
Well, 95% of the time. - ladoublep, on 11/01/2007, -2/+1sweet!
- xeyne, on 11/01/2007, -2/+0What sucks is that there are people who go to the lengths of profiting off the ill. As tracker198x said, all they'll do is just "maintain" your health status. Ok this may just be an ignorant claim, but there is a high chance that "they" (the medical community) can cure most ailments, but won't. Merely cos of pharmaceutical companies know there is more money in a temporary solution than there is in a cure.
- inactive, on 11/02/2007, -6/+1Read up on the vitamin B17 that has long been known as the most effective way to prevent and assist in curing cancer. Unfortunately the FDA banned many of the foods containing the vitamin back in the 70's. It is been suggested that more people currently make money in the cancer industry than there are people who have it. Two of the most potent of these foods is apricot seeds and bitter almonds. Doctors recommend eating 7-10 apricot seeds per day. Knock the mass in the middle with a hammer and you will see a seed that looks almost exactly like an almond. This seed is golden. It's bitter so eat it with a teaspoon of honey or something to take the taste away.
- Berkana, on 11/01/2007, -6/+1Cancer cures pop up in the news every once in a while. I'm not surprised anymore by hearing about them. The sad thing about all this is that true cancer cures that have been tried and proven probably won't make it mainstream because they can't be patented.
Take curcumin for example. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, the yellow spice in curry and mustard. It has been clinically tested and proven to cause apoptosis (cell suicide) in cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched. (See: http://margaret.healthblogs.org/life-with-myeloma/ ... ) That's huge. That's a claim most chemotherapy drugs can't even make. But curcumin can't be patented because it is a natural extract of a plant root, so it won't get the big funding for studies and promotion in the medical community. Such a travesty.
Here's what Wikipedia has on curcumin:
