- breakdancecrew, on 01/30/2008, -4/+136That article is great, but the summary for this Digg post seems to suffer from some kind of brain lapse.
- hamhat, on 01/30/2008, -6/+80OK, for everyone making jokes about memory loss: you are not even remotely funny. Wait till someone close is affected by this. Then, I can laugh at you. Yes I have a sense of humor, too, but let me explain why this aint all that funny:
A very close friend had aneurysm surgery 4 years ago. They saved her life and finally put a stop to the massive migraines that were just about crippling her from the pain, had been for years up to that point..
To do that, they have to first give the patient a craniotomy - they saw the top of the skull off, peel back the protective layer above the brain and start doing their thing.
In the process of removing aneurysms and/or blood clots, they have to touch and physically move some of the brain tissue, sometimes to get to them. When anything comes in contact with brain tissue, there is usually (at the LEAST) memory loss.
My friend made it through her surgery and was ok, but after that..she did not remember me at all.
Think about that for a minute, I know you guys are on Digg but I would imagine some of you have real life friends that you care about. Imagine if one of them got very sick and had a 12 hour long operation that saved their lives - but then they dont remember you at all.
Luckily, in my friends case she was not blind, crippled, brain dead or anything after her surgery. She just had a very big blank spot in her memories, from the age of 13 to her adult years. Thats a big gap! (shes 30 now)
Lucky for her, I sat and talked and talked and talked and gave her back so many pieces that she was missing, some folks in her family didnt even know some of the stuff I was telling her. All I wanted was to have my friend back as she was before. I didnt know if that was even possible, really.
As it was, I talked to her a lot and she felt less disoriented about things and her family just let her do her thing and stuff was mostly normal.
Fast forward to last January - she had another episode where she passed out, and they found yet more blood clots in her brain (aw, *****, not again).
But the odd thing was, was that just out of the blue..she remembered everything again.
I cant begin to express how glad I felt when she told me that. Is she the same? Hell, no. She is more of a bitch than ever! But, lucky for me..she likes me (so I dont see the bitchy part usually).
If you know folks who get migraines, have them get checked out. An aneurysm can burst and kill them very quickly. A stroke can cripple them in an instant. Having someone close to you, and then losing them.....it really sucks ass.
Ok, lesson over..***** off and go outside and play and stay off my lawn. ***** kids. - cawpin, on 01/30/2008, -3/+47Dugg for truth and for not being a douchebag and submitting it anyway.
- plamoni, on 01/30/2008, -2/+42Well, maybe he HAD a better description, but forgot it...
- plarp, on 01/30/2008, -4/+33i'll try to remember this, the next time i forget something
- ligyron, on 01/30/2008, -1/+23Dr. Scientists sure has been accomplishing a lot lately
- djbon2112, on 01/30/2008, -2/+22Hey kids, he's not whining that he was beaten. He's saying he's angry he was beaten but the description sucks, meaning had he not been beaten there would've been a better description for the article. He's commenting on the fact, not whining, k?
- voyvf, on 01/30/2008, -0/+19It was never cool - you were merely deluding yourself. :D
- republicker, on 01/30/2008, -2/+18So now there are no side effects to marijuana use.
- entrophize, on 01/30/2008, -6/+22I'd like to remember how cool it felt to wear z. cavaricci pants and listen to Vanilla Ice.
- inactive, on 01/30/2008, -3/+18So what will all these politicians/athletes do now?
"I dont recall" - Taikun, on 01/30/2008, -3/+15This is an amazing breakthrough if true, I just hope they can figure out a way to replicate it without 'deep brain stimulation electrodes'.
- unearth, on 01/30/2008, -0/+12That really should have ended in a Bel-Air.
- Tyr7BE, on 01/30/2008, -5/+16*****, I read that as "way to reverse loss of money" and thought I had hit the jackpot.
- Philluminati, on 01/30/2008, -1/+12This could explain why people who get electrocuted in near death experiences say their "life flashes before their eyes".
- Neekolazz, on 01/30/2008, -0/+10Never before have I seen such a string of immature comments to a true statement. I guess I don't visit youtube enough.
- nickdngr, on 01/30/2008, -0/+9Were we reading the same article? It explained it perfectly. The electrodes provide controlled "shocks" (to inhibit that area of the brain and balance it with surrounding activity) to the hypothalamus because, they believe, the fornix, which carries signals for the limbic system - linked to memories and emotions - is close by. Yes, they've been shoving electrodes into brains for years for other diseases, such as Parkinson's Disease to control tremors and other parts for depression, but never specifically for memory issues. Even when this happened, they discovered it entirely by accident. That's the breakthrough.
- KraftDinner101, on 01/30/2008, -0/+9That's because research takes years. Do you remember any of the articles you read when you joined? They're probably still testing those ones too.
- crazyflanger, on 01/30/2008, -0/+9Now grandpa can remember me changing his diapers....then stealing his medication and falling over in the bathtub. JOY!
- wildfire, on 01/30/2008, -1/+9Dammit, that was a long read -- I forgot most of it already.
- inactive, on 01/30/2008, -1/+9Meanwhile his brother, Joe Scientists, continues to get hell from his parents for dropping out of high school.
- xtmno3, on 01/30/2008, -0/+8djbon is commenting on maturity age, not physical. The two don't always go hand in hand.
- shortyjacobs, on 01/30/2008, -0/+7I want to dig you up for the first sentence and down for the second....they explained the breakthrough in simple, layman's terms. If they really went into the intricacies of brain surgery, 99% of people would doubtless tune out, and you'd whine about it being too technical. You can't have it both ways.
That is a trap. I offer money, you'll play the man of honor and take umbrage; I ask you to do what is right and you'll play the brigand. I have no stomach for games. - tMANwi, on 01/30/2008, -0/+7Glad someone said something. My grandfather passed away from Alzheimer's and it was the most painful thing I ever had to go through. You guys should really be ashamed, I wish you never have to go through something like this, ever!
- Lust4Me, on 01/30/2008, -1/+8The concept we only use 10% of our brain is not proven.
http://csicop.org/si/9903/ten-percent-myth.html - vellaem, on 01/30/2008, -1/+8Use this innovation on Alberto Gonzalez.
- noumuon, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6only have time to read digg during office hours.... .... ....interesting.
- BabaRamDass, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6"Wait till you face this. Then make a comment."
My dad had a heart attack a few years ago. It didn't kill him, the docs said he was very lucky. But we still joke around about the heart attack.
Realize that not everyone thinks like you do or handles bad experiences like you. Then get on your pulpit.
(And for the record, yeah the memory jokes here are pretty lame.) - djbon2112, on 01/30/2008, -3/+9It's short, but it's not to the point or grammatically functional. Try again.
- blandy, on 01/30/2008, -1/+7It's not like this technique hasn't been used before (i.e. Parkinson's). As stated in the article, it would be just like wearing a pacemaker, but for your brain.
- FoxFaction, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6"the man, who weighed 190kg (30st)"
...miss, and another miss. Sometimes I hate being an American. - bukiyou, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6I wonder how traumatic experiences would affect someone on this memory thingermajigger. Sometimes it is convenient to forget things.
- the6thReplicant, on 01/30/2008, -2/+8no problem, most/some of us only have time to read digg during office hours, and so our submissions (not that I've had any on the front page ;) and comments are usually quite spastic
- hamhat, on 01/30/2008, -1/+6I have a sense of humor, thanks. If folks dont like what I typed, well then....bury it. Simple as that.
As far as Alzheimers, well, lets see: I can think of a number of friends parents that are dead from it.
Also, maybe what I wrote is there to help someone, if its not you...then dont whine about it. Just live your life. - cklol, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
- la7crosse11, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5kinda ironic...I read yours as "way to reverse loss of memory" and didn't understand what you read wrong!
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6That reminds me of this story I heard about. Something about scientists reversing memory loss.
- jnosanov, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5"Bailiff, please install the deep brain stimulator into Mr. Gonzales' brain" - Judge
- ten minutes later -
"Your honor, I can't seem to locate it." - Bailiff - allatti2d, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5As a brain fanatic (with memory problems since the age of 15), I think this article is awesome. It's absolutely amazing how far humans have come with brain research, and stunning to know that we've only scratched the surface. It just blows my mind. (uh, no pun intended!)
This is one I really wish I could keep digging... and I'm glad it got as many diggs as it did, no matter who submitted it! - NikoK, on 01/30/2008, -1/+6Now I can continue to smoke pot knowing it will all be fixed.
- VeryBoredNow, on 01/30/2008, -2/+6What was the cure for again?
- alex7575, on 01/30/2008, -1/+5"Potheads across the world forget why, but celebrate anyway..."
- mwmccullough, on 01/30/2008, -1/+5FTA: "...All other attempts to curb his eating had failed and brain surgery was the last resort. The treatment for obesity was unsuccessful."
Poor fat bastard. - xtmno3, on 01/30/2008, -2/+6Just stop. Obama is not Ron Paul. don't pull the same ***** those bastards did. Leave politics to political discussions.
- hamhat, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Nope, just had a story to tell. Fun things is, is that Digg times out on me while I'm sitting there typing.
Maybe I should type with two hands? NAW! Yah I am a long winded bastard. :-) but thats half the fun. - Aidje, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Looks like The Haitian is about to be out of a job.
- hydrodev, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3actually its been disproven.
- xtmno3, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3Plus, their jokes just aren't funny. It isn't really a case of not having a sense of humor, it is more "I don't laugh at lame jokes"
- hydrodev, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3FTW
