- Natnie, on 12/22/2008, -1/+62All anyone needs to do if they get shipwrecked on a deserted island is make a "help" sign out of rocks, and someone will eventually see them on Google Maps.
- BMAnderson, on 12/22/2008, -3/+52Google, saving all our ***** one thing at a time
- dngermouse, on 12/21/2008, -12/+54Might as well call this:
Scientists alert poachers of new territory via google earth
pretty cool though - Wade, on 12/22/2008, -1/+38Can't wait for Google Ocean...
- t4stringer, on 12/21/2008, -4/+29Very interesting article. It's amazing the effect that technology is having on all aspects of our world.
- anon4031, on 12/22/2008, -0/+22"up to three years" later
- kvadd, on 12/22/2008, -2/+16Anyone has the coordinates for Google Earth?
- sanman, on 12/21/2008, -5/+15I once found Gilligan on Google Earth
but then I lost him again - lolwaffle, on 12/22/2008, -1/+11Yeah but Bernard's wife, Rose, wouldn't let him.
- stonebear, on 12/22/2008, -0/+9It would be a nice opportunity to get your head together and grow a nice beard before rejoining the rat race. Or starve to death. Whichever comes first.
- 6oo63D, on 12/22/2008, -0/+9Oil companies and poachers have Google Earth Pro. The possibilities are endless...
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+9It's cool that they found some new species but I think it's rather sensationalist to say they discovered a new forest. The people of Mozambique knew it was there all along and I'm sure millions of people have seen it on Google Earth long before it was "discovered" by scientists.
I'm sure there are plenty of other places on the planet that haven't been studied extensively by Conservationists. That doesn't mean they are "undiscovered".
And we haven't even scraped the surface (or rather have only scraped the surface) of the oceans. - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -1/+9Even more exciting for the guys driving the "Street View" van.
- insanebrain, on 12/22/2008, -0/+8Look on his island.
- brianpeiris, on 12/21/2008, -0/+8Reminds me of the Galaxy Zoo project. It would be awesome to see a version for Earth and maybe even an undersea version. Crowd-sourcing exploration.
- vikingboy, on 12/22/2008, -1/+8Just tell me which new species can be trained better than cuttlefish
- Efilnikufesin, on 12/22/2008, -0/+7FTA: "...a new member of the Gaboon viper family of snakes that can kill a human in a single bite." Thanks Google. Thanks a lot.
- toconnor, on 12/22/2008, -0/+7It is part of a conspiracy to keep the Loch Ness Monster hidden.
- monkeymad2, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=55.0746 ...
There's one showing how the quality changes on the border...
Who was doing the imagery? Romans? - briarmoss, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5Right. That's how it works. You digg it... because you like the content.
- stonebear, on 12/22/2008, -0/+4Google Earth is hardly arcane you know; those who ravage nature know how to use it too.
- monkeymad2, on 12/22/2008, -1/+5What's up with the crappy satellite images for scotland?
The quality drops at the border, you can't even make out houses.
When Georgia - a place google doesn't even have maps for - gets beautifully detailed pictures...
It's been like that for years.... - Kopassu, on 12/22/2008, -4/+8Yeah because scientists shouldn't report their findings
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+4Wake me up when they find dinosaurs... or dragons.
- borez, on 12/22/2008, -0/+4Just out of interest, what's all the sudden interest in submitting Telegraph stories?
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3And I thought it was the CIA..
- bigboss0101, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3There will be Google [fit any noun here] within ur lifetime.
- TheGuruStud, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3Don't you mean Waldo?
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3Discovery is a relative term; it always applies to a specific audience. Western science circles probably don't communicate regularly with the rural peoples of Mozambique, and probably don't share a common system of taxonomy with which to classify the species at hand.
- toyrifle1, on 12/22/2008, -0/+34 years, approximately..
- temsi, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3*there
- limpits, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3is it too much to ask to get some pictures?
- DaSaint, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthpicturegalle ...
It's just on the right side of the article.
Is it to much to ask to just look and pay attention? - thecruncheress, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3More to destroy! Woohoo!
- darladoon, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2now some corrupt ***** will go and chop everything down
- ltbtb, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Great! More wood! I hear there is a special at Home Depot this week.
- owenblacker, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2Completely.
But, as KaseyCarbone said in reply to the comment before yours, it's new to Western science — a specific meaning. Sure, it's been there millennia, but nobody who knew how to study it* knew it was there. Not "New", just "New to us" :o)
* Loosely speaking; yes, I'm sure there will have been local humans studying it, but you know what I mean. - bstock, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2It was there before, you just didn't know about it. Besides, how often you head out to northern Mozambique through inhospitable terrain?
- Myztry, on 12/22/2008, -1/+3While the discovery of unexplored areas in exciting, the method will allow for quick systematic checking off, till there truly is no place left unexplored.
I kind of like the idea there are unexplored areas safe from humanity. How long before there is no mystery left in the world? - Spaceboy492, on 12/22/2008, -0/+2"Within weeks they had a new member of the Gaboon viper family of snakes that can kill a human in a single bite."
I wonder how they figured that out? - noahhoward, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2With our satellite imagery, yes it is. And, even if it is not large overall, it was hiding new species. The point being there can be a lot to learn in a little bit of unknown.
- hangglide, on 12/22/2008, -1/+3Don't you mean riding it?
http://www.photobasement.com/wp-content/uploads/20 ... - bigboss0101, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2As someone here said.. u need to wait for Google Ocean.
- FlashBazbo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+2Reigate, in Mozambique!
- Natnie, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2Or maybe go batsh*t crazy and talk to a volleyball.
- str1fe, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2http://is.gd/ddiq
Damn nature, you scary. - owenblacker, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2s/lazy/busy and underfunded/
- owenblacker, on 12/24/2008, -0/+2It's a very good paper on many topics. Personally, I disagree with most of their politics and am an archetypical Guardian reader, but that doesn't mean it's not a good read…
- nightsky07, on 12/22/2008, -1/+3Another win for Google. Our overlords!
