- happyperson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26what's wrong with the good old days when cops could just rub some on their gums and then nod knowingly at their partner.
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Yeah cause using a drug is like going on a killing spree. It's hurts oh so many people doesn't it? When I smoke a joint, I walk around on the streets and people just fall down dying. It's the craziest ***** I ever seen. Don't put your god morals on me. Don't you ever ***** tell me what I can eat drink or partake of when I care too. If you do that, it is you that are the problem. That's when it gets physical.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Is the 'dipstick' referring to the officer?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17thats not "fun", thats a videogame
- 808kick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Title is misleading, I though this would be for testing purity.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13if you have saliva, urine or blood up your arse you have more important things to worry about.
- rmmcclay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Drug tests piss me off.
- dsol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11stage freight? not my kind of strip club...
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10sure, because smoking weed is just as bad as a homicidal spree
I mean of course cocaine and weed are evil, just stick to good wholesome alcohol, tabaco, caffine and painkillers, mind altering anti depressents etc... those things arent evil and murderous - MikeSeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So, what other use does this have that isn't singling out people for their choices of how to have fun?
- rwerkun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8lime sulfur, crystal meth, anthrax, and stupid in-dash cameras made police work more boring.
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Is this to test to see if you just snorted cocaine or washing powder?
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It still won't be able to be held up in a court of law. Only a GC-Mass Spec can do that.

Actually, if you live in America b man you do have a legal right to own a firearm and possibly even explosives. So tell me again, why are you ALLOWED to own a firearm, a device that can kill people with a simple point and click interface, but you are NOT allowed to own a bag of cocaine - a substance that, to my knowledge, has never been known to self-combust, produce an explosion of any kind or kill anyone that wasnt actually ingesting it?
The answer of course is that cocaine is a mind altering drug and can lead to the user doing dangerous things, including harming others. But then you have to ask yourself, how many legal substances are there that can achieve the same effect? To my knowledge there are plenty, and the only reason cocaine is so potent on the street is because it has absolutely no standards control - if the government legalised it they could control the potency and no-one would risk buying it (cut with rat poison) from a dodgy guy whos probably armed and dangerous from a back ally - why would you take the risk when the drug store down the road was selling it by the bag with free straws for next to nothing and it came with a health and safety certificate? - gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I thought a test already existed:
Step 1: Stick knife-tip (butterfly or bowie variety preferred) into cellophane wrapped kilo (preferably one marked by a scorpion insignia)
Step 2: Insert powder covered tip of knife into mouth.
Step 3: Taste powder for authenticity/quality
Step 4: Make dry remark about the superb quality (thats good *****...)
Step 5: Proceed to roundhouse kick drug dealers/cartel members to the head
Step 6: Repeat steps 4/5 as necessary for desired effect.
Step 7: If you need more stamina, repeat step 3 until desired level of alertness is achieved. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7a little cocaine never hurt anybody. it just allowed daryl strawberry to like himself, and hit the ball a little further. plus it makes it easier for strippers to overcome their stage freight
- MikeSeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@thebman:
Has it ever occurred to you that running around guns ablaze and shooting people actually... hurts people? That is not to say some people don't deserve to be shot, yet still you should spot a little difference between this and doing drugs. Just because some drugs are "illegal" doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it. Oh, especially in The U.S. of A, where laws can be bought, sold or exchanged for material goods, sexual favours and religious convictions - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4(The 'dipstick' is actually just a rolled-up $20 bill)
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ahhh but isn't that the point, to move this technique from a mass spectro and into the field? gold nanoparticle tech is solid. not that I support overarching authoritarianism, but this seems like a perfectly legit field test to me.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thank God for the war on drugs!!
[vomiting] - javaj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So did I, never mind back to the lab.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Booger sugar.
- MikeSeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think the problem with /use/ of the technology that can quickly tell someone else that you recently used drugs is the same as with the technology that can quickly tell someone else that you've recently had sex, visited a church or protested against the war.
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate to break everyones hearts, but they didn't invent anything. I just took an employment pre-screening, and the drug test involved sucking on a small salty paper stick for two minutes. http://www.4intercept.com/ When I trained DEPs for the US Army, we purchased sticks from the drug store to check kids for cocaine, marijuana, and heroin use. That way, only tweakers made it to MEPS processing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great, that's all we need is more ***** trying to interfere with what we do in our personal private lives.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The article mentions its primary use as being a quick test for paramedics. You know, to diagnose potential overdoses, which could save lives. Very few employers perform random drug tests, and they're likely to stick to the old piss test, which is so easy to beat that if you lose a job for failing one, you probably weren't smart enough for the job to begin with. Employer drug testing is a formality; they don't want to lose promising candidates over it anymore than you do. Coke leaves your system in about two or three days. Don't snort an eight-ball the Saturday before your upcoming drug test and you'll do fine.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm non-plussed. When I started my current job a few weeks back, I took a ten minute drug test with a sponge on a stick I had to hold in my mouth till it was saturated, then ten minutes to watch the little strip turn colors.
- panamakarl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is nothing new. A company called Global Detection and Reporting has a very similar test that has been on the market for a few years. They also have drug wipes for pot, meth and opiates. All you need to do is swipe the thing along the surface.
Regardless of whether you agree with it or not, this technology is already out there. - dipiddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Spit into the cup.
- shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ksponge
are you really stupid enough to equate smoking weed with snorting coke simply because they're both illegal substances? That's like saying shoplifting is the same as murder because they're both illegal too.
MJ has minor physiological risks similar to alcohol in many cases with its overriding negatives being potential for loss of motivation and damage to memory - similar to alcoholism. The case for legalization can be made because of the similar effects to legal consumer products and also medical purposes. - shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wrong parent bury
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2True that. People automatically think cocaine is the devil because of the whole "war on drugs" hype.
It CAN be, and it's very easily abused, but it's actually not that devastating for you provided you don't go ***** with the stuff. It's just a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, similar to what anti-depressants do.
The risk of becoming cocaine-dependent within 2 years of first use(recent-onset) is 5-6%; after 10 years, it's 15-16%.
All boils down between use and abuse. - Katana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder if this test has the same false positive results other ones do after you've eaten anything with poppy seeds in it (bagels, cake, etc).
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If it were legal, the whole "drug trade" argument would be out the window. Then, there would be no scary drug dealer men to harrass your children, only marketing execs.
- dylanmat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder where they dip it...
- spling, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Seeing if your child is on cocaine... maybe?
- shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1gee, because coke-heads always stay in their homes when they're high and never venture into public where they pose a danger to anyone else, and of course they also grow the cocoa plant in their backyards and process it themselves so that there are no South Americans living in squalor, being beaten and shot to harvest the crop whose sale is used to fund dictators, despots and such wonderful people as the Medellin and Cali cartels.
Yep, just your private life - no one else is affected. - shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@polyGone
that's not true at all, some of the biggest smuggling in the world is of legal products like cigarettes, tech products or liquor. Just because cocaine were made legal doesn't change the fact that the largest crops are controlled by brutal organizations and if government can control purity as some proponents of legalization claim, then that means the government is screening and possibly taxing the product, both prospects making it likely to be smuggled.
And that's a huge difference between marijuana vs. cocaine beyond just physiological effects - you can grow a mj plant in your backyard and be able to use it from the plant, cocaine has to be manufactured from the cocoa plant.
Diamonds are legal too, yet smuggling happens all the time, and the harvesting of diamonds in Africa is built on the oppression of the people working the mines.
-and you ignored the first part of my argument... - Chrysalid, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9@MiddleGirth: no, but "*****" would be accurate :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i do cocaine!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3dipstick up the arse?
- thebman990, on 10/12/2007, -27/+4So it's alright to do illegal drugs if you're "just having fun"? How about if my idea of fun involves running around and shooting people, or blowing up buildings? I guess that's alright because I'm just having fun.
