- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -2/+73who cares about how it flies. How good is it at Wii bowling?
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+59Dugg for most acrobatic use of facts. This is a story about parts that did not come from a Wii or an iPod used to measure the flight of a flying lemur that is not really a lemur and doesn't fly.
"The backpack used an accelerometer much like the one used in a Nintendo Wii controller and coupled it with a memory chip similar to an iPod." - mr1337, on 02/07/2008, -1/+31Gentlemen, I introduce to you: the Liimur.
- Error601, on 02/07/2008, -2/+28No, didn't borrow technology or even parts from either. RTFA.
- Rockout, on 02/07/2008, -1/+26Oh sure... when a "scientist" does it, it's "science."
When an "alcoholic" does it, it's "frowned upon."
Damn double standard. - Tempest261, on 02/07/2008, -0/+12Yeah, it drives me crazy how people think this technology is new. Nintendo was just the first to apply it to video games AND market it successfully. If anything, Nintendo borrowed technology from scientists that have been using accelerometer technology for decades.
- Digg413, on 02/07/2008, -2/+14Let's see some Sharks with Freaking Lasers on their heads (courtesy of the Wii Zapper)
- ConanTL, on 02/07/2008, -2/+14I can't wait until they install Linux on a real live penguin ... you know, for science.
- lex0nyc, on 02/07/2008, -0/+9Dugg for shaving and gluing things to tree-dwelling creatures while they sleep.
- Klarth, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8Thanks for telling us
- wapee, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6I looked for a video of colugos in flight on YouTube but only found mating colugos...
- CitizenKane, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6sorry, we only have ill-tempered mutant sea bass.
- mr1337, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6Oh crap, I forgot. This is Digg. I have to be more politically correct.
Lady (sic) and Gentlemen... There, that's better. (I jest.) - user24, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6Oh Yeah? Well I just buried you for your spelling. Ha!
- Murdats, on 02/07/2008, -1/+6NO! they are mine, all mine.
1997 will never get them back you hear? - Zippo, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4What happens when a drunk scientist does it?
- retrorambler, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Why don't they just stick them in a wind tunnel?
- angusm, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4I want that man's job.
"So, what is it that you do again, exactly?"
"Me? Oh, I glue video-game console components to small mammals. In the interests of science, you understand." - dareyoutomove, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4dugg for the title
- wheresjim, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4I for one welcome our motion sensing-enhanced primate overlords...
- superjunaid, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4Amazing way to record data, next I wanna attach several of these accelerometer coupled with ipods (ipod nano right?) to a monkey to find out how it's so acrobatic and use this data to make a robot so it can mimic those movements. RoboMonkey why not?
- Cryoniq, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Yeah! Me too! :D
- adamkmccarthy, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3dont worry dude, i got your back :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wavNc4nuVyk - adamkmccarthy, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3dugg for the quality of the comments. superb.
- travbrack, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3They really use the word "Scientist" lightly these days
- ThePikey, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3I was hoping they glued the wrist strap on a lemur and then the scientist put his hand in the strap. Now THAT would have been something to watch.
- bremstrong, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the great title.
- rsd212, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Scientists have been using it for decades, sure, but what about the auto industry? MEMS accelerometer chips have been in use for car airbags for a long time now. Of course, "Scientists Glue Dodge Caravan Parts to Flying Lemurs" isnt as enticing. Ok, I lie, I would definately click that.
- epyon8282, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I'll bet i can beat it at Wii boxing
- shadowspawn, on 02/07/2008, -2/+4Dugg simply for the mental picture of lemurs flying into the widescreen tv trying to play wii boxing.
- spyder91, on 02/07/2008, -2/+4Buried as inaccurate for that reason. You don't need to relate everything to socially accepted devices to make an article worth reading. In fact, you can't.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/07/2008, -1/+3Dugg for "acrobatic use of facts." i lol'd, hard
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -2/+4and you didn't post it why?
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -2/+4they really are called flying lemurs though. it's like flying squirrel. plus, i like to imagine the scientists did get the accelerometer from a wii remote after a marathon tennis session.
- buddamus, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I'm putting my money on the Lemur
- Cryoniq, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Yeah.. he he..
"The backpack used an accelerometer much like the one used in a Nintendo Wii controller and coupled it with a memory chip similar to an iPod. The backpack then could feel and record all the movements of the colugo wearing it." - inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I'll take that bet for 10 bucks if you make a video of it.
- mdpolaris, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Float like a lemur, sting like a...ahh whatever!
- Juntistik, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Buried for misleading inaccurate title.
Accelerometers were around long before the Wiimote, same goes for memory chips. - thebrawl, on 02/07/2008, -2/+31997 called, it wants it's movie quotes back.
- cigawoot, on 02/07/2008, -2/+3Read the article, they attached backpacks with gear SIMILAR to an iPod and a Wii Remote. Burried for inaccuracy.
- HairyFotr, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1But if you don't return them soon enough it could rip a hole in space-time. By my calculations that should happen somewhere in late 2012.
- ShoGunX900, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1dugg for gluing things to animals.
- bitterbug, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I scored 65,536 on Extreme Lemur 3000 but then my lemur exploded :(
- KingGorilla, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1why not? Robomonkey uprising
- cwcentral, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't it be cheaper, faster, and more robust if they just built their own sensor--Wii this and that maybe neat and cheap, but inefficient compared to a purposeful IR sensor. (it's just a IR sensor and processor).
Of course, that's if they did know how to build the stuff (fairly basic engineering skills anyone?) - emjaymj, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1RTFA - not only did this have nothing to do with IR sensors, but they didn't actually use Wii parts.
