- keyforce, on 12/18/2008, -0/+55I thought wine snobs look down upon everything.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+25It turns out we can emulate WINE
- GeeksSpeakFont, on 12/17/2008, -0/+22now this is the kind of science i'm behind! really it's vaguely magical. i did speak with a sommelier recently though who was telling me about how wine snobs look down upon wines manipulated in this way.
- farfromhere, on 12/18/2008, -1/+18WINE is not an emulator?
- thirdeyeopen, on 12/18/2008, -0/+15Soon I will be able to buy my wine in a gallon jug and have it taste GOOD!
- tavallai, on 12/17/2008, -3/+15[['I have thought of designing a set of equipment for use at home,' said Dr Zheng. 'But not yet.']]
Because there's a whole nascent Chinese wine industry willing to pay millions for this, bringing melamine-tainted Cabernet to the masses. - XZanatos, on 12/18/2008, -0/+11Electricity makes wine artificial in the same way that COOKING makes food artificial, which is to say-it doesn't. Idiot.
- FishHammer, on 12/18/2008, -1/+12***** curing cancer, THIS is the kind of science I can get behind.
- GrooTheWanderer, on 12/18/2008, -0/+11If it annoys wine snobs, that's just another point in its favour as far as I'm concerned.
- UncleTimmy, on 12/18/2008, -0/+8How is electricity an artificial product and how is it being "put into" the wine?
This is very interesting, but not surprising. - BigglesPiP, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7What was wrong with linking to the original NewScientist article?
- restlessdesign, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7Thankfully we have beer snobs to look down on the wine snobs!
- noino1966, on 12/18/2008, -4/+11Electric field to my balls is more pleasant than reading anything printed in the daily mail
- molotovcat, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7No point in waiting if the quicker process produces the same results. Waiting for the sake of waiting is, well, if you can't figure it out on your own it doesn't really matter then, does it?
- Neworab, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Jesus was one step ahead of them!
- MindTrigger, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6The attention to detail in your comment was very useful. Thank you!
- Feener, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Who still calls wine 'plonk', honestly?
- Frozo, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6acetv, um.. where have YOU been? He's pretty much on target with the sarcasm, based on China's recent media madness.
- CrushThemTorg, on 12/18/2008, -1/+61. Wine isn't brewed
2. The Daily Mail sucks.
3. The best part about drinking Thunderbird is that you feel it.
Doublebury. - Yage2006, on 12/18/2008, -3/+8I heard a while back that this was *****.
- humanerror, on 12/18/2008, -1/+6I buy my wine by the jug and it already tastes good. All except for the first jug.
- LittleGerms, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5This is years old
- ihateexplaining, on 12/18/2008, -1/+5Car battery + 4 litre cask of $4 dollar wine = Good times
- BorsKaegel, on 12/17/2008, -7/+11Now we can't even wait for our wine to age naturally? Fascinating, fast-paced world we live in!
- quizme, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Well with today's post at hack-a-day on how to build a 900kV generator...
http://hackaday.com/2008/12/17/900000-volts-at-you ...
all I need is some of the Ex's cheap wine. I wonder if it would work on beer or coffee? - PaperKutter, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4LOL electricity
- melonhedd, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3For the price of the filter you could just buy better vodka...
- Elnicko, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3These day's cheap wine is more commonly called "The Good Stuff"
- grendelboogie, on 12/17/2008, -1/+4The tasters felt the once 'harsh and pungent raw wine' had become 'harmonious and dainty' said Dr Zeng, of the South China University of Technology.
Say "No" to "dainty wine"! - digitalpencil, on 12/18/2008, -1/+4you know the optional bury list? duplicate, spam, lame etc..
can we get a 'buried as complete daily mail *****' button too? - skyshock1, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Any particular reason why?
- neelshiv, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3This will not necessarily make "good" wines cheap, but it could make "cheap" wines good.
Because the cost of producing a wine that is "good" will go down, people will be more willing to supply wine that taste good at a lower price. This could mean that producers who produce wine that is currently considered good will lower their prices to compete. They may even adapt the new technology.
Still, there will be wineries that refuse to adopt the new technology, and they will still charge a high price because it still costs them money to age the wine. They may even end up charging a higher price because the supply of "old fashioned" wine has decreased.
Experts claim that the processed wine is good, but if this actually starts being implemented, new "experts" will start claiming that they can taste the difference. - jp12380, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2It's not microwaved, and it obviously taste good otherwise they would not have written this article. Microwaves definitely have a price you pay for your food to be done fast.
- Berkana, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Copper also does a nice trick to wines that need a bit of aging. If you have a copper mesh, or any clean copper item, stir red wine with it; the copper will catalyze the mellowing of some of the harsher tannin flavors of the wine.
- freddyjackson, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2WINE is not electrocuted
- AnalogAssassin, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2He turned water into wine, but was it GOOD wine? I don't guess he was much of a wino back then.
- ketchupcorsair, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Yes, but not everyone cares much for microwaved food and or wine...
- WellHelloThere, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2I heard a little bit of antifreeze also makes the wine good... as long as it doesn't make you blind
- funkytaco, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2This was on digg about 2 years ago...
- spaceman84, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2This is old as *****. When are we going to see it in the consumer market?
- jp12380, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2You win 1000 internets.
- skyshock1, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2I would think with beer it would release most of the carbonation.
- Berkana, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2BTW, if you doubt this, try this in a double-blind test with your sommelier friends. This actually works.
- dhughes, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1 I thought this was going to be a dupe about the device that uses ultrasound to shake wine (or other fluids) to make them taste better. Combine the two machines to make a super wine maker.
- PopcornDave, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Regardless of how fast this changes young wine, I'm curious what the process does to a changed bottle that's laid down to age after it's been zapped. It would be interesting to see what the aging process does, if anything, to a zapped bottle.
- Maddoktor2, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised this took so long to figure out - electric Ripple was very popular in the 60s/70s.
- funkytaco, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1What he said.
- maz2331, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1What's strange is that nowadays, even cheap jug wine is fairly decent. It's not as subtle as a really good one, but it isn't exactly "rot gut" stuff either.
- freddyjackson, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Don't forget the titanium electrodes!
