Am I the only one that thinks this media hype on the bird flu is stupid? I mean really... What was it we were going to die from a couple years back... SARS? Yea! Thats it. It was that virus that turned you into the living dea... er... gave you flu like symptoms. The media loves to hop on anything that makes news. Virus' *real and computer*, war *If some island that no one has ever heard of was about to blow it's self up, there would be about 100 reports there from all over the world*, Violence *First it was elvis, then rock music, after that D&D, then rock AGAIN, now it's... dun dun dun VIDEO GAMES! PARENTS HIDE YOUR CHILDREN*.
Lets face it, we know the world is going to hell; we don't have to worry about that. This is some media money pot is all this is. They keep point back to 1918, as one poster pointed out, but fail to tell us the details. You have Opra *cough* corprate pig *cough* working the mommy crowd while us guys and working mothers have CNN and Fox. NONE ever tell you why the event with the last deadly flu was so deadly! Nevermind that there living conditions sucked and they didn't know what meds to take, IT WAS KILLER FLU!@!!11211@!11!1one - andrewr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's true, all the best things come from Pittsburgh, PA

- Ruckus21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin Rose acquires patent for Avian flu vaccine, immediately sells it for a profit of 300-500 million US. Rumored to be looking at purchasing controlling shares in Yahoo. What a country!
- Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nothing is 100% effective. It was only 100% effective in their experiment.
Still, bird flu is mostly hyped up by pharmaceuticals to rake in the dough. It's not actually a huge danger. If you're a healthy person and not really old, really young, immune-challenged or in poverty you have nothing to worry about. - loup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Actually, only about 50% of people who get bird flu actually die, its not good odds, but its not a "FORSURE" death."
The statistics of mortality rate of Avian Influenza are only based on reported cases, and those cases aren't usually reported unless they're serious cases. Most likely there have been many more people that have been infected than there are reported cases. Therefore, mortality rate is probably not actually 50%, it's probably much lower.
Here's a tip for avoiding avian flu, don't play with bird poo and then eat a sandwich without washing your hands first. - hardkoretom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the bird flu scare is a scam made up by the fda and drug companies. It was invented to scare people who watch and believe what the media says. By the time the bird flu mutates to go human to human, it wont be worth getting a vaccine for. Another thing people should think about is: do you know if they put the vaccine for the bird flu in the actual vaccine? if so than what else is in the vaccine?
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once it mutates, Earth shuts down.
There will be no vacciene and there will be no way to stop it. It will spread around the Earth in a matter of days. It would be much worse than 1918. Do you know that the milk you buy in the grocery store made it there less than 24hrs ago? We don't have wearhouses of food. Things make it to shelvs in days. 90% of inreedients for medicine are made in foreign countries. What happens when we have to shut the global economy down. No food. No medicing. It will be horrible.
kali - Don't be such an ignorant fool - aa90digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is chronic shortage of regular flue vaccin every year anyway.
But I don't know, maybe the governement will be able to handle that one.

You've never lived here... have you
heroin, bad schools, dirty streets, some really bad parts of town where cops are afraid to go, city bankruptcy... the list goes on.
On the Upside, We have an orchestra, several stadiums (Heinz Field [yes, like the ketchup, and john Kerry's wife], PNC Park, etc), Three Rivers (One polluted, one clean, one half polluted), and we'll be getting a google headquarters soon.
Good News: We wont have a pandemic
Bad News: I cant sell bottled air to the masses. - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Virus develops immunity in vaccine in 5.... 4...... 3.... 2.....

:( - jonohull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In mice and chickens it is. Wake me up when it's humans.
- Burns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The major concern was never if they could produce a vaccine, the problem was could they produce enough of it, after all they expected it to be a Pandemic which means hundreds of millions of people would die, no dig.
- BirkBum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That testing is a tad dangerous...
- crazyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess this could be considered good. Though, don't release it till it starts hitting humans.
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More people would die from stampeding each other for the chance at getting a 100% sure fire, but difficult to acquire, vaccine than would from the real bird flu me thinks.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes! now i can go eat at KFC.
- thechitowncubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06 months to create enough to be useful says CNN
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0JimXugle, I've been selling bottled air for about 5 years. I make a pretty good profit of $60,000 a year once you subtract all the costs and everything. Sure its not to the complete masses, but its better then nothing.
Perhaps you are aiming for the wrong demographic or you need better advertising?
Okay...I am *****. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, at least we know the chickens will be safe :).
:(. - snarkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
R..I..C..O..L..A!!! - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"hey, if you actually caught the Bird Flu, you'd probably volunteer to test it in hopes that MAYBE you'll live instead of "FORSURE DEATH""
Um... maybe you forgot about the part where you must take a vaccine to prevent getting the flu.. not to cure it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0while I am not saying it couldnt happen.. the odds are much larger than they make it out to be, that this will turn into a pandemic. This not only has to make the jump as a foul to human disease but it also has to start coming out of the mouth instead of the ass, as we dont eat our own ***** like chickens do and then the host has got to survive long enough to spread it.. So it has to make a double mutation.
I just really hope the price of chicken doesnt soar chik-fil-a is already pretty pricey. I have a urban chicken farm near me and when ever i see them trucks stack ten high with chickens all i can think is delicious. - cavicster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet. It makes me a little uneasy that there is a live virus in it.
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, SARS did have a 50% kill rate in those over 65, so it was an issue to the elderly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>There is a chronic shortage of regular flu vaccin every year anyway.
Thats because we don't TRY to produce all that much of it.
There is no money in production of regular flu vac therefore there is no incentive for companies to make it... there just are not that many willing to waste the money keeping up production facilities etc.
If we really WANTED, say for a national emergency with full government and public support, to make lots of a vaccine we could make ***** more of it than we ever could need in a lifetime. - greensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg this so it wouldn't have 666 diggs. Either way, if this is true (didn't read the article) it's good news.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yes! now i can go eat at KFC."

- Burner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I really hope it is a working vaccine, cause i don't want to get the bird flu!
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That testing is a tad dangerous...
Yeah true that.... But it has to be done or else the disease could possibly get stronger and be another black death. - Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Now how about a vaccine for colds? I got a flu shot, so instead I've gotten two nasty colds this winter already.
- Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"What happens when we have to shut the global economy down. "
Now THAT's paranoia!
This is still an animal disease we're talking about here... And 1918 wasn't caused by a virus, it was caused by people taking aspirin to eliminate the fever, making the body passive to it's threats.
http://www.brojon.org/frontpage/Letter1918Flu-SARS.html - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nature wants to battle!
Nature sent out Avian Flu!
Go Vaccine!
Vaccine uses live viruses!
It's super effective!
Avian Flu fainted!
Nature has been defeated!
;) - bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Excellent! I can start breathing again.
*GASP* - thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+080 deaths?! oh my god thats scary!! people need to get a life. 80 deaths out of 4 billion people is not a big deal. the regular flu kills more people anually than the bird flu has ever killed.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hey, if you actually caught the Bird Flu, you'd probably volunteer to test it in hopes that MAYBE you'll live instead of "FORSURE DEATH"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is stupid. Worldwide pandemics are much more fun than vaccines. I'm 28 years old. I deserve to see a mass loss of life due to disease before I turn 30, you selfish *****.
