- serif69, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9I'm running the bite marks through the database now, sir.
*scanned bite mark appears in green on left of screen as millions of other bite marks flash on right side of screen, also in green*
Almost got it...
*screen freezes, and dots appear on each bite mark with lines connecting them*
Got our killer!
*page showing every conceivable piece of information about the culprit instantaneously appears in printer*
Here you go, Gil. - RetroRufio, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Sure, but where are they gonna get a picture of Jack Thompson?
- keraneuology, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Bite forensics have been discredited for years and have been shown to have sent more than one innocent person to prison. This pseudoscientific crap needs to be relegated to share a closet with phrenology and Keynesian economics once and for all.
- mattysan, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Lil' John is in big trouble.
- jiminizer, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Let me guess, every time you run the program it displays an image of a man dressed in black wearing a cloak, with a pair of very sharp fangs?
- houndeyex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Go to xray view.
My god.... there's the gun, right there in his jacket.
A 50 caliber Desert Eagle, with a serial number matching registration to our killer!
Got him. - ncredblstrength, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4How about a database of skidmarks to find out who keeps clogging the damn toilet at work!!!
- MrCrumbles, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Martin, there are all kinds of sharks in the waters, you know. Hammerheads, white tips, blues, makos, and the chances that these bozos got the exact shark...it's a hundred to one...a hundred to one. Now I'm not saying that this is not the shark. It probably is, Martin, it probably is. It's a maneater, it's extremely rare for these waters. But the fact is that the bite radius on this animal is different from the wounds on the victim.
- meeksthegeeks, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2nom nom nom nom
- Sasquatcho, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Maybe they should do an investigative study on "hunches" as well.
- enicholas, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Like some other courtroom forensics, there is little to no actual science behind this. Sounds just like lead chemistry analysis for identifying bullets, which has been effectively debunked.
- glbowens, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I'm trying to keep in mind that this is work done by researchers that "could lead to a database of bite characteristics". Right now it's only a software program belonging to researchers. This doesn't necessarily mean that the database will be developed or will be used by the FBI or even city, county, or state government, which is who runs the majority of forensic science labs. Still, the thought that innocent people could be wrongfully convicted of a crime based on something as unreliable as bite marks scares the ***** out of me. I hope nothing comes of this.
- houndeyex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1You mean they rip out all their teath like Gormagon? (Bones)
- Metman, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Marv Albert! Look what you've done!
- Scopitone, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1A database full of kinky pervs and toddlers? How useful!
- ChzPlz, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2No - they use dental records to identify people by their teeth. BIte marks change with how/what you bite. Your fillings don't.
- ninjaskimo, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3Does anyone else also think that this is just utterly ridiculous?
- bxblox, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Compare that with his smile on the security footage.
Rotate around him 30 degrees.
Zoom in on the reflection in that puddle.
Now enhance it.
Got him. - unusualbob, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Arent bite marks unreliable because your teeth continue to migrate your entire life?
Just saying they've been thrown out of at least a couple cases. - ChzPlz, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1They absolutely do change. People get new fillings etc etc etc. But they take that into account and only look at things that are still the same.
It's not like they do a CSI scan against all dental records on file - they use it to confirm an identification, or to check against a relatively short list of candidates. - robthom, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Pretty slick. Not many people can go through life without a visit to the dentist, and then they put that in your file with your SS#, credit rating, bank transactions, internet habits, library card activity, traffic violations, parking tickets, etc.
No wonder they're jealous of our freedom, and god bless the troops for protecting it from them. - houndeyex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Yes.
- MookiBlaylock, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Inspector Hunch
- DeFex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1get the reflection in that guys eye from the ATM camera. enhance. its a plane ticket! read the bar code.
got him! - DeFex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1but according to CSI they already have this. ans a database of every show sole pattern (its called solemates) and a database of every kind of carpet fiber, rope fiber, and so on. surely they cant be making it up
- MrWhite7, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1dugg and you know why.
- glbowens, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1You mean BSI? You shouldn't believe half of what you see or hear on that show. They make everything involving forensic science look so much more glamorous than it actually is. It is my understanding they used to have a forensics advisor to the show but the majority of the time they decided not to listen to him because the truth didn't look or sound as good on TV...
- DeFex, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1measure the mark on his skull against a few tools, all the same brand. oh look it matches this particular pair of bolt cutters. lucky he didnt use one of the other 23474 brands and sizes ever made.
got him. - TheEnoculator, on 02/17/2009, -0/+02010 Headline: Higher crime rate committed by senior citizens baffles police.
- garywilliams, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0When I saw the title, I assumed this would be for spiders and ticks...
- buffyangel108, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Finger lickin' good news
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0I still don't think, considering ppl have braces, don't brush, and simply mature, etc, that they're teeth aren't going to change to some degree ove they're lifetime...even eye scans are a very reliable form of evidence on par with dna/figerprints, NOT teeth.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Well, this means the first celebrity to bite someone will get all of Hollywood, excluding Steve Buscemi, arrested.
- gryphon50, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0this is one of the things they used to convict Ted Bundy, but I'm sure if that case had happened nowadays it would be DNA all the way.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1But isn't using dental records the same problem then?, they seem to rely on it alot for identification.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -2/+1That's right. I've watch quite a few crime shows on cable that say that bite mark analysis just aren't good enough compared to DNA or a finger print. People can lose teeth, they get chipped and dental work can make it very difficult to reach conclusions.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1bit mark is a 100% unreliable form of evidence...ppl leave they're dna and even they're fingerprints relativly the same in any situation, but bite marks????.
So if I bite an apple, or a sandwich, they can match it, huh???.but what if my jaw hurts and I eat differently???.
I only hope they don't accept this bs science just to put more inoscent ppl away. - weister42, on 05/15/2008, -5/+01. Wife bites in bed
2. Bite marks remain
3. ???
4. Profit!
