- JamminR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The way the Dig headline was presented is a bit misleading...Seti@HOME is still going strong...the old servers for the old software are being shutdown.
No digg from me. - orpheum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ CLIFFosakaJAPAN
Please read the entire article. SETI is not being killed, just moved.
Here's the new instructions on the SETI@home website...
"1) Read our rules and policies.
2) Download, install and run the BOINC software used by SETI@home. When prompted, enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu." - Kido1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Us your computer for more intellegent things.
Folding@Home. Help find cures for diseases with the rest of us. - The_Raven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not that sad actually, since you still can contribute to the SETI project using the BOINC client and also contribute to other science projects.
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Did seti actually ever help discover anything?"
Of course they did. Didn't you ever read/watch "Contact?"
That was a documentary, didn't you know that?
SETI is more or less being integrated into other scientific projects anyways. I mean, we're already using radio antennae to look at star-systems for low-energy spectral analysis. Why have a group just look for intelligence when they can do that while they work on current discoveries. - DEWelch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have been using the Boinc client for months now and it works great. I am doing both SETI and the Einstein at home.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This title is a lie, and one of the few reasons that Digg lacks behind many credible news sources.
Seti@Home Classic, is indeed, going to be shut down. They're just making you use the BOINC client, which is more-or-less the same, except with support for other projects as well, allowing you to work on multiple projects instead of just one. You keep the SETI@Home screensaver, only now it looks cooler and is in 3D.
I honestly don't see the big deal. - bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@kittynipples
you said: "SETI is such a joke. Billions have been wasted on a program that has produced absolutely nothing... but that's the government for you."
SETI isn't run by the government. It's a private organization.
and this is a terrible headline... very misleading and WRONG. SETI is just making the official change to the BOINC client from the old.
I've been running SETI and Einstein for months with BOINC... no issues.
Now, how about seeing Planet Quest finally come online? Been waiting for that one forever. - Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is very miss leading Post. Seti@home is not being killed off. They are just stopping Support and use of the Original(Classic) software. You now have to use the BONIC version. You are also not forced to support the other projects. You can still just do Seti.
- punica888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this titel is really total ***** and absolutly misleading
I have used Boinc for over a year now and it has been a real pleasant experience.
I can only complain about the climateprediciton project, it is still my favourite project in terms of what is does but my PC never managed to finish a unit and only got an error at some point so now i am just contributing to Seti, Einstein, Predictor and rosetta all great project and real usefull - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's what the official site has to say:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/tech_news.php - fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2use your computers for good, not for finding little green men.
Fold for the cure! - alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2have been using BOINC for over a year now. its not getting 'killed off', but think of it as an 'upgrade'. (a rather massive upgrade at that)
- Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually like the BOINC program. It seems faster then the SETI@Home version I was using before. I have been doing the SETI thing since 1999.
- strestout1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1afaik, this has been known for quite some time (a year at least I'd say) and SETI already offers a BOINC client.
- orpheum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They've also put up a form to let you transfer your old S@h account to a new BOINC account.
setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_email_form.php - slackerhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the old software more then boinc ...
But I am also Doing Einstein and SETI - saruman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My computers have done over 11000 work units. I know that many people have done many more than that, but that's still a lot of time invested since May 1999. Sad to see the original go away.
- tomscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I run bionic on 4 computers in two different locations, and can manage all of them from the web.
so long seti@home client - datapoohbah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"wtf. finding aliens is so much more important than curing cancer"
Aliens HAVE the cure for cancer (duh) ;) - linker3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone ever seen BOINC components used for spyware/zombies - one of our servers was running a command (cmd.exe) process within SQL server that was running a component identified as part of BOINC and the users on site swear they had not downloaded anything. I killed the process and removed some suspect files and the 'problem' has gone away for the moment.
- DanDaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very badly titled, but worth a Digg because y'all should switch to BOINC.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BOINC is FAR better. I have never had a problem with BOINC, plus I can contribute to multiple projects at once. The Seti@home client was just a pain in the @$$. Every time there was an update, something broke on my system...I hated Seti for that reason...
On the other hand Einstein@home and BURP are great projects, and I have never had a problem with them.
However, I honestly believe this is just circumstantial. Diff ppl are going to have diff results.
From my personal pain, I am digging this cause I am glad to see the Seti client DIE!
:-D - bionicpill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate to burst your SETI is a waste of time bubble, but because of SETI and SETI@home, the world now has and knows about distributed computing. And now we can see that distributed computing is very useful for solving many other kinds of problems. Who knows, SETI may prove to be the catalyst that cures cancer. I wouldn't call that a waste of time.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They have been running off of the BOINC engine for over 6 months. I have been running SETI@home since early 2003 and BOINC for SETI since February
- Export, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you RTFA, they are only ^*SWITCHING SOFTWARE*^ to BOINC.. which is vastly superior... it allows the user to also help with other distributed projects from the same UI. The same graphics as was used by the seti client are used also.
There is no reason to panic!
SETI IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE!
This headline is totally misleading. no digg. - chiapet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm still looking for life on this planet
- mathie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another good distributed computing project: http://folding.stanford.edu/
- jinxie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wtf. finding aliens is so much more important than curing cancer
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, SETI@Home has in some ways revolutionized the internet. They must have been the first public distributed computing platform ever (correct me if I'm wrong). I've personally used it since at least '98. It's nice to know they aren't going away completely, but the term SETI@Home has definitely made a name for itself.
- Awesomedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forget seti, and fold for the horde http://www.hardfolding.com
- Urbanotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't mind the change , except for the pleasure of seeing it hit 9000 units , but BOINC has me stymied on the Proxy setup page and I can go no further. I am not running either kind of proxy but am behind a Linksys and Zonealarm. What port should I be thinking of here or have I just missed a menu choice?
As for distributed computing I will keep on SETI for now as discovering an alien civilization will finally unify humanity in the aspect that we will all be trying to destroy someone else instead of ourselves. Hopefully these future Digger and Farker Aliens will have more than 2 genders and a downloadable guide to parenting teenagers. - illu45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... well, that's... interesting. Personally, I was never a big fan of SETI.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go folding@home!!
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> tzon wrote: "No BOINC OS 9 client. 1 less job my legacy Mac can perform. :("
I've got a small stack of older OS9 Macs on which I've been running SETI@Home. I too would love to see someone put together a version of BOINC that I can continue to use on those older machines.
> PumpkinEscobar wrote: "My account is so old that he email is no longer valid and I don't remember the password. Close to 3000 units will now go uncredited."
I'm in the same boat. I've got about 5,500 work units under my belt but the eMail address SETI@Home has for me is no longer valid and I haven't a clue what my password is. I don't want to start over. - ph713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
The distributed.net RC5 cracking effort circa the same era would have shown (and did show) the world the power of distributed computing just as easily as SETI@home did - so no, that's not a justification for SETI's existance. - Camman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, title sucks, "seti@home killed off" isn't accurate at all, they're transitioning over to the new BOINC architecture and cutting off support for the old client.
- npiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and just like that theyre gone, would love to know the final tally of computer hours that were wasted on this Boinky crap.
Im all for finding aliens, but SETI was always a little too far fetched for me, It was a good example of distributed calculations. - jkearney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1""No digg from me"
Explain to me how this line, which i see way too often - has any bearing on anything?"
^ lol - tommis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I think Seti@home as a project is great, but sometimes I wonder if people who participate in distributed computing projects (any of them) really understand all the aspects of it. Especially the cost of running one client.
Running a distributed computing client on your machine is not just using "idle cycles". I remember when I gave seti@home a spin long time ago - when the program went active it was basically using 100% of CPU all the time while running. "So what - I'm not using the computer then", I hear you say - well, when the computer is using 100% cpu - it will most likely start using more electricity as well than while running idle. This effect is even more visible with newer computers that have features that during idle moments, tune down processor speed to reduce electricity usage. They wont be going into any "eletricity saving modes" if the CPU is running at 100%.
Has anyone got any figures on how much electricity one might be paying for when running one of these at home? And if you're running it at your work/school/office, someone still has to be paying for that electricity used... - cma3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I get the whole changeover/upgrade, or whatever you want to call it, I can't help but to be upset about all the time I put in with the original seti@home/setispy client. This can be considered egotistical or whatever...but for me that list (teams/users)was a nice quantifiable reference.
According to the boinc manager I've been using it for 53 days. Sure its clean, easy to use, and pretty stable. But it doesn't have that grassroots feel anymore and I am considering uninstalling it and just forgetting about the whole thing. But the jury is still out on that one. - datapoohbah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, (-) diggs are a must,
to add balance, yin/yang
you can't have one without the other. - analogtyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is actually a good idea... research aliens...or life saving tech at home?
although it was a cool novelty - corcad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Misleading title, SETI is still going strong. No digg from me.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'this is actually a good idea... research aliens...or life saving tech at home?'
My thoughts exactly analogtyler, its a big waste of energy IMO. Whats the point of wasting so much effort on something so trivial, especially since yeah will be able to find the answers a magnitudes easier a few down the line. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is anything more important then finding aliens?
Our knowledge of everthing could easly 100folder over night. - DKasler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate the new BOINC. S@H was easier and more intuitive IMHO.
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh well. :-/
- philmunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always found it amusing that people would try not to waste their idle clock cycles by doing something equally as useless
- zlajoie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The title is bad. I saw it and got depressed for a moment. Then realized that it's just the old client going away. I've been using Boinc for a while now, no real problems other than a crazy socket error message every once in a while.
