- sissipher, on 10/10/2007, -2/+69It is because, such as and the like, all maps are with Iraq, Asia, and South Africa. Thus, WE NEED MORE MAPS!
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32The new SAT is MUCH EASIER than the old one. I took both generations and breezed through the second one. There is no longer analogies and quantatative relationships which make the test CAKE. To score decently (10+) on the essay, all you need are basic articulation skills. Just don't start off the essay with, "Thomas JeFfErSon wuZ KeWL cuZ..." To see that the scores are going down is sad pandas.. I was taking a test with a few people that were comparing their previous test scores, and here's how the conversation went.
Student 1: "How did you do on your last SAT?"
Student 2: "I got 900"
Student 1: "omg are you serious? THat's SOSOoSOOOO GUD!!!"
Student 2: "I know, it's madness!"
Student 300: "Madness? THIS, IS, SPARTAAAA."
edit. Crap double post. Thanks digg for the aesthetic changes yet keeping the same crappy comment system fixes for last. - Burritoking924, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29I blame MySpace.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Stupid Class of 2007.
- armourer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Good.
I need to get into college next year - sodoh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15WE NEED MORE MAPS!!! LIKE SOUTH AFRICA!!!
- shadekeiko, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15The SAT is so ***** up as it is. First of all, the Critical Reading is way too objective - more analytical/process-oriented people like myself end up second guessing the question and/or answers due to their extreme vagueness. The writing section mainly consists of easy basic grammar, but when it comes to the essay all they really care about is structure rather than content. Taking the SAT, while it may set apart the dimwits from the more competent people, ultimately only scores you on how well you take the SAT.
The fact that this one score I get is a factor in determining my entire future is a bit disconcerting. While I didn't do badly, with all of the baby boomer's kids all trying to get into the most competitive universities, ultimately it comes down to numbers. - cpk121, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11You're pretty cocky for a score that is not that amazing, bud. It's fine and better than a lot of people, but a lot are scoring 200-300 points higher than you.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I got a 12 on the essay, but trust me, you need more than basic articulation skills to get that. I've seen plenty fairly well written essays that got 8's or less.
- Rev0lver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12To get a 12 on the essay you ned to be a good *****. Nothing more. Pick a stance and make up 3 examples articulating said stance. That's how I got my 12.
- bwhancock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The obviously solution to this issue is more money...it couldn't possibly be
1. bad parenting
2. unions that protect their worst members
3. schools that are more interested in self-esteem than the three Rs - Flanker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I believe Ms. South Carolina took the SAT this year.
- dinostabOMG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9There's no punctuation section on the new SAT, is there?
- Lousansano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I totally agree with you.
- Azap, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11my biggest distraction while studying for the SAT was...well...masturbation!!
- eliezerlp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8"Bell Curve"
- tehtopher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8A standardized test is useless if everyone scores in the 2000-2400 range. An average student is supposed to score 1500 (Mean of 200 and 800 is 500 and a standard deviation of 100 gives a full three standard deviations either direction).
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.
- insane11, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Maybe they should watch Conan.
- maddendude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8It tells you that the SAT is unbalanced, 1 math section, and 2 english section. Of course a minority will have more of a deficiency in english than math, english may not even be his or her first language. I would expect minority test scores to decrease on the new test score for that reason exactly. I'm a minority and I can tell you that the math section was a cinch, but I had to study hard for english. The grammar doesn't come naturally to me as it does to non-minorities, I didn't grow up with english and I don't even hear it at home.
- maddendude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8get a facebook before you criticize it. facebook =/= myspace.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's a problem that many people in our nation don't own maps.
- sanman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5At least Miss South Carolina won't have to feel so bad now.
- KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I give your joke a 900 / 2400
- K3ITHK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6RTFA
- queenstarsha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6that just means someone else got an extra-low score to offset yours and make your class, on average, the most dumbiest. i blame bush, not y'all. that miss america contestant sounded just like him, and bush's plan to standardized-test y'all every thirty seconds doesn't seem to have worked.
anyway, you're probably headed to an extra-good school, given the competition. congrats. - nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7yep, 2240 here, but I've only taken it once so far. I don't usually brag about that kind of thing, but joegibes used the word "pwned" and he had to be dealt with. Hint: your score will be at least 80 points higher next time if you never use that word again.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+52260, but I think you'll find that my score is inversely proportional to the amount of ass it's even gotten me...
- tehtopher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You didn't give any indication of where your locale is but I'm certain that the Class of 07 is not significantly dumber than any other recent class. My school had a large increase in the number of National Merit Finalists (myself included). It's also possible that we just took all those NMFs that your school is missing...
- manzoire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4the sat is bogus. i got about a 1600 out of 2400, but i go to northeastern university and i have a 3.9 gpa, and im double majoring. the point is, there are many, many different types of intelligences. these are the things you need to be able to do well...
1. you gotta be awake. this sucker is 4 hours and 30 minutes long. is it a sign of stupidity if someone can't stay awake for that long? i dont think so.
2. A simple mind. on every question, i found myself questioning things and over-analyzing. the sat is more like a long game of checkers rather than chess. instead of thinking of creative ways to answer the extremely simple questions, you just gotta find that one simple move. really, does it mean that im dumber than other people if i think TOO much about a question?
3. No Creativity. there is absolutely no creativity on this test. some of you may say, who needs to be creative?? one of the things i have learned when applying for jobs in the business world is that having creative intelligence is just or if not more important than just knowing the facts. nothing on the sats tests anything that can constitute as creative.
i could go on and on, but the fact is that the test is stupid, and thats why some kids take it seriously and some dont. because those who take it seriously know they will do well because the test matches up with there specific intelligence personality. GET RID OF THE SATS. - Shadowhawk109, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I just took the ACT. It's not easy. Not even a little. 28 out of a possible 36, and I'm an A/B student. You have to prep for weeks beforehand. Some people even prep for months. If the SAT was anything like it, then I can understand to an extent why scores are down from previous years. The damn things keep changing, and it really isn't fair to compare modern versions with the past versions.
HOWEVER, I know for a fact that some kids just don't care. One kid walked into the ACT test room, moved all his testing stuff to the floor, and slept through it. Other kids refuse to do any prep. I admit I procrastinated, but at least I did some. A LOT of kids these days figure if they don't get a full ride scholarship into a Big Ten college, then Mommy and Daddy will just pay for it. Mind you, these are the same kids that text while driving. They aren't the brightest.
It's important to note that NOT ALL TEENAGERS ARE LIKE THAT. I do my best to be myself. Don't define the entire population by the majority - isn't that what most Diggers are pushing for? The political opinions of my fellow Diggers appear to be that way.
I hate these statistics, as well as these idiot drivers I have to deal with, and the No Child Left Behind Act - some of my classes are so dumbed down that I can't focus, or retain what I'm taught. My kid brother could learn what I'm supposed to learn. But I can't. Nor can I get out of those classes. Guidance consolers just throw people into whatever is available. And the alternative, AP/Honors, is HARD.
Some, well, a LOT of teens are complete retards. I deal with them on a daily basis. But not all. Please remember that.
/end rant - KMye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You're wrong about the Critical Reading (at least as it was ten years ago). It's all analytical (and I think you mean "subjective", which may shed some light on your possibly poor verbal score ;) ). But you're absolutely right that the SAT isn't necessarily a good measure of how someone will do in college. I could be the mascot for that statement, actually.
/took the scenic 8+ year plan through undergrad - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"more analytical/process-oriented people like myself end up second guessing the question and/or answers due to their extreme vagueness." No, that's why they say "best" answer. It's a judgment call, and you judged wrong. I agree though that the SAT is overrated. BTW, Madden, ACT was cake, and I didn't notice any big differences other than it being way shorter.
- KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Dumbiest" is totally is my favorite new word of the week. I wish they'd put that into an analogy on the SAT verbal.
btw - I blame MTV et al more than Bush; this started long ago - KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Goddamn it that sucks, I've been wanting to retake it sometime soon to see how much damage the last 10 years of drinking and other have done to me...
- maddendude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yea, teachers I've talked to say standardized tests for their purposes are not helpful. The simple answer to a better education system is to increase funding for schools to spend on ooks, programs, and most importantly, teachers. Without a second of hesitation I can tell you that the best thing for my education has been having good teachers. A good teacher can make up for the deficiencies of poor quality books, but brand new books can't turn a bad teacher into a good one.
- Ngai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4no one wants to learn nowadays...
- Crasoum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3800+800+800 = Math+Reading+Writing; not just 800+800 = Math+Reading, like it used to be.
So a new 1511 is more like an old 1007, VERY roughly. - KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If by liberal overlords you really mean the Bush administration and their no child left behind initiative...
- punchinelli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The SAT is bull crap anyway. I graduated high school in 2002 - the SAT was just two portions at that point, highest score = 1600. I pulled an 1190, yet graduated from my 4-year university with a 3.83 cumulative GPA.
It all depends on what classes you've taken recently in context with the test. I hadn't had a majority of the material yet when I took the test - but a lot of my friends said it was a cake walk (made high 1400s, etc.), and were currently enrolled in the advanced math courses that most of the material was derived from.
I had most of the math material AFTER I took the SAT - a timing issue. The test needs to concentrate on reasoning abilities and problem solving instead of if you remember a random mathematical formula. - Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They're called cartographers. You didn't do so well on the vocabulary section of the SAT did you? I don't blame you tho. People have been dumbing down words for years, making things simpler. No longer do complex words get uses, just these ridiculous combo words. i.e. No one ever says, "Haberdasher" or "Cobbler" any more, they just say, "Hat Maker" or "Shoe Maker." I don't blame you, I think that english will probably devolve as a language to something like the language they spoke in Idiocracy. Not quite as bad, but I think in thirty years all mildly complex words will end up being replaced by a combination of simple words.
/RANT - grifmcrenolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And to Ted Kennedy who wrote the bill.
- grifmcrenolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Anyone who texts while driving deserves to be removed from the gene pool.
- DietCokeTin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The SAT is a perfect example of the inherent flaws of a nationwide standardized test. The SAT measures nothing except how you take the SAT. The only reason the SATs are important is because they've become the cheap and easy standard for large public universities to sift through thousands of applications a semester. It's a terrible test created by a business that specializes in making money. Their chief concern is making sure students take their tests as many times as possible, not to creating a worthwhile and scholastically viable method of assessment.
Declining scores on an inaccurate and academically laughable standardized test isn't really the doom cry that some would have you believe. - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah, don't be so proud. That's not a fantastic score. I took it once, did better, and left it at that. And the SAT isn't something to be very proud of. Hard work and perseverance (two things I'm still working on) aren't measured by it, and those are what really count in the end.
- kingvik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3o no u didnt myspace iz da gr8est
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Reynolds you *****, way to beat me and steal my thunder. Oh well 1540 on math/writing is still nice :D 680 on the writing isnt as nice.
- xxpor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The College Board is non Profit
- outhouseinput, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The only thing the SAT/ACT matters for is Undergrad. For graduate school, you have other tests. Law: LSAT. Medicine: MCAT. Business: GMAT. So don't worry kids.
- mightyarmenian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Considering the massive score inflation that has occured with the SAT since the 70's, it would be nice to see the trend shift downwards.
