- DforSpiD, on 10/13/2008, -0/+38The best way is to not have the baldness gene.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -2/+35wait till they find the noob gene
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -0/+29DOES THAT MEAN THEY CAN MAKE IT STOP?!?!?!?
/begs for baldness cure.
going bald is torture - lekahe, on 10/12/2008, -1/+26Hmmm, once again a study which has been familiar to all of those who have baldness in the family.
One thing I do never understand is why men have to hide it! The men who shave the "leftovers" are far more sexy than those who try to hide the bald spots.
Bald is beautiful!!! - Khast, on 10/13/2008, -0/+22God only made a few perfect heads, the rest he put hair on them.
- chodges4, on 10/13/2008, -0/+20When I glanced over the titles on the front page, I thought this said "Researchers discover badass gene, 1 in 7 men at risk"
- ByronT, on 10/13/2008, -0/+15Shampoo your hair with sulfuric acid.
- flossdaily, on 10/13/2008, -0/+14As a young guy who has been dealing with going bald way earlier than I would have liked, I did I little experiment:
I posted a picture of myself with a full head of hair on hotornot.com
Then I posted a picture of myself with a shaved head.
My attractiveness rating (an average of 150 votes each) was only 3% less for the shaved head- well within the margin of statistical error.
So, the brutally honest opinion of 150 or so anonymous internet people was that it really didn't make much difference either way.
I found those results very surprising. I thought for sure no one would ever be attracted to me as a bald man. - Pedobear, on 10/13/2008, -1/+153 out of every 4 children are born as Noobs. In half of the cases, the children outgrow their Noobiness after maturing into adults, but the other 50% grow up to be Huge Noobs.
- kirualeorio, on 10/13/2008, -0/+14There is nothing you can really do. Just look at Steve Ballmer and Steve Jobs. Both net worth at 15 billion plus but they are still going bald. You would think they can afford any cure for baldness. But no, there is no cure yet.
I say just shave it and forget it. - OfNumbers, on 10/12/2008, -0/+13Those are good odds.
- nealparr, on 10/13/2008, -0/+13This is what pisses me off. So many new scientific discoveries are being made today, yet they won't probably help me in my lifetime. It's like a bait and switch. My kids, apparently, will never have to worry about baldness and will possibly live to be 150 years old or more. Me, I get stuck being bald and dead by 85. Meh.
- postitnote, on 10/13/2008, -0/+13Historically, 100% of people suffering from baldness has eventually died.
- Kronich, on 10/12/2008, -1/+13Nahhh - go with the combover ;-)
- kevxross, on 10/13/2008, -2/+14Fatal? I didn't know "risk" implied death.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -0/+10I treat boredom with acid.
- ChromaVita, on 10/13/2008, -0/+10You guys must not be very good at passing torches if you keep burning all the hair off the top of your heads when you do it.
- Shiftgood, on 10/13/2008, -1/+11Nizoral Shampoo
Rogaine foam
Finasteride (cut into 1/4th daily)
vitamins/ healthy lifestyle
these will only let you keep hair, not grow it back.
may god have mercy on your soul. - postitnote, on 10/13/2008, -2/+12Kill yourself and you'll die with a full head of hair.
- waxoff, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9Great. A genetic test to tell me what I already know: I'm losing my hair. Like I need someone to tell me that = P Submit an article when they find the cure. Then I might get all happy and stuff.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9They dig it in guys who have a face/skull that suits it. I've been told by every girl I've been with that I'd look horrible with no hair.
- dhughes, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9 I lost :(
- flossdaily, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9***** baldness!
- cugar, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9thats what my grandfather always says, ill be adopting it soon enough, the torch has begun its passing process
- kh99, on 10/13/2008, -2/+11I've heard that castration will prevent baldness.
- davecor, on 10/13/2008, -0/+8In the cases of Bruce Willis, Sean Connery, and Vin Diesel - it IS the badass gene.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -1/+9Yeah, but currently 100% of bald people are alive. So, fingers crossed.
- Checkerd, on 10/13/2008, -0/+8We can only hope.
- Shiftgood, on 10/13/2008, -0/+7There is a company called Folica that is doing research with stem cells. Who are getting very good results. (they just got another 11-mil in funding) but stem cell development is hindered with government regulations.
hopefully we'll all have full heads in about 2-5 years.
i dont know if you care. Obama = pro stem , McCain = no stem.
Cheers - slothlovechunk, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6finasteride works well for most people that use it and has no side effects for most people as well.
Propecia is still patented, that is the 1mg finasteride.
Proscar is not patented, it is 5mg finasteride for BPH. If you find a smart dermatologist, he can prescribe you the generic Proscar and you can take it for about 25 cents a day instead of the 2 dollars a day Propecia will cost you.
Avodart was a new drug that is supposed to be better, and keep/grow even more hair as it was a more complete blocker of whatever causes hair loss. It is available for BPH (like Proscar), but not hair loss. They never did the Phase III studies for hair loss with it (probably because they didn't want to compete with their own product--I'm sure in 2013 when Propecia is off patent they will finish the studies for Avodart to treat male pattern baldness). You can probably get a dermatologist to prescribe this for you as well, though you won't be able to get it in generic.
You may probably want to wait until you actually experience hair loss before you go to a doctor for it. - MyNameIsGusto, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Sure why not, I'm already treating my acne with acid.
- Ymeg, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Baldies unite!
- Shiftgood, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6lol dude, start now then.
Nizoral Shampoo
Rogaine foam
Finasteride (cut into 4)
vitamins/ healthy lifestyle
you can only keep your hair, cant grow it back.. so dont wait until you look in the mirror and go "oh *****"...and ofcourse, check with your doctor if you think you're at risk of something. - Ardiea, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6I totally read that as "Researchers discover badass gene. 1 in 7 men at risk."
I was disappointed. - Enixyle, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6The claim is that 1 in 7 are at risk for having this "baldness gene", not for having any degree of hair loss (which naturally occurs with aging).
- perogi21, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Amen my bald brother.
- schnikies79, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Finasteride (Propecia for Americans) has about a 50/50 chance of causing new hair growth. Otherwise it stops hair loss.
Insurance rarely covers it. - RobotBuddha, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Yep, you have to start as soon as possible. Of the males in my family, I'm now the 'only' one who has hair. I think probably because I saw how every male on both sides was bald and started treatment the second I was out of high school. It could be that I'm simply not at risk, but given the family history it's more probable that I managed to catch it before much damage was done.
- VieRelative, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5I'm balding and I really don't want to be bald. I think bald guys look lame.
So I don't really care if women don't care.
I care about my hair. But I don't want to pump myself full of hormone or hormone blocking thingis.
It sucks. - Stevethegreat, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Most possibly you would still looking to be in your early 20s without using propecia either. The effects you're describing are not included to the clinically found side-effects of propecia, impotence on the other hand was, but if that was the case you would know it already and you would keep of the drug anyhow. Many Holywood actors are using propecia (for some reason they think bald is ugly down there) and some of them are quite known for their physical fitness...
- dotsona, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5So far the best option is Propecia, I am on it, and it seems to work well :D
- greenwald, on 10/13/2008, -1/+61 in 7 no way. I'd say just one in seven men don't suffer some hair lose over their lifespan.
- MissCellania, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Bald men are sexy!
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5At risk makes baldness seem dangerous
- davecor, on 10/13/2008, -2/+7I won't be your dad's fault. If your mom has brothers, you are likely to have hair similar to theirs.
(In other words, it's a maternally transmitted gene) - davecor, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6If they invented a cure for baldness, I wouldn't take it. My wife would be heartbroken.
Guys who learn to roll with baldness quickly discover how many women dig it. - btschul, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5I saw that too, then checked for The Onion, then re-read it.
- atact88, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Look at it this way - with as many bald men as there are in the world, the ladies obviously have no problem with passing this gene on to their children!
- perogi21, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5Dyslexics untie!
- pstroll, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5see John E. Sununu vs John H. Sununu
