- compjinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Story: "But when they played the dog version of laughing, all 15 barking dogs went quiet within about a minute."
Story from one of the dogs' point of view: "But then, when we heard the maniacal laughter from the loudspeaker, we knew that we had not simply been locked up by the hands of the humans, but that we had been betrayed by one of our own kind. His evil laughter rings in our ears to this very day." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This isnt news, everyone of us has heard a dog laugh, dont pretend you havent heard Scooby Doo laugh, geez, and they had to do a study to find this out!!
- TechReticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People always complain about the animal stories on Digg, but why?
Digg has the coolest animal stories EVAR!
Zombie dogs, killer squirrels, shark eating squids, alligator eating snakes, laughing dogs...
I say keep 'em coming. Better than reading about AJAX or CSS for the tenth time anyways. - suprfli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Researchers have found that dogs laugh but have they determined what dogs think is funny? Do they laugh at fart jokes or do they have a higher standard for their comedy? Do they prefer clean humor or do they like when a comedian works blue? I need to keep this in mind when working the dog comedy circuit.
- middlec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm more interested in what they did to make the original dog laugh. I'm just picturing two scientist standing in a field with intern Bill.
Scientist: "Ok intern Bill we're going take this nerf bat and hit you in the nuts with it."
Intern Bill: "Why do we have to hit me in the nuts?!"
Scientist: "Because we've already tried all the dick and fart jokes we know." - cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i want to hear an audio clip of a dog laughing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2""It's great to know we have scientists working on issues like this, you know.. the REAL questions and problems facing our world today. Let cancer wait, we must know if dogs laugh"
Just because certain scientist are studying the behavior of dogs, does not mean that other scientist are not working on more important matters. I am almost positive that if you take a look around their are scientist studying even more outlandish theories. This ***** matters man
!"
The more you understand about the environment you're working in the better your chances of making a world changing discovery in the field you're focused on. There's a reason why all colleges make their students take courses outside of their field.
This comment is targeted at both the "Why don't the focus on something important!" crowd as well as the, "This isn't tech news!" crowd. I wonder how the plastics that make your IT device's casing would have come to be without the the creatures that died to become oil, which was then processed by humans, who had different psychological and medical conditions, with knowledge in chemistry that not only allowed the device to be manufactured but the possible mdical treatment that they may have needed that we were able to control thanks to various scientific methods including the study of animals which live on a world with humans that is either the product of some greater being (such as the flying spaghetti monster) or the laws of physics...etc. - plus1gees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think this would surprise any dog lovers.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to start laughing like a dog and see what happens.
- Mocib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"But when they played the dog version of laughing, all 15 barking dogs went quiet within about a minute."
Hmmm... sounds like it was just a bad joke. I mean, why the 15 dogs were silent instead of laughing? =) - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That description made me smile:)
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely worthy of a Digg, even the comments are funny ;)
I want to hear an audio clip too, try it out on my dogg, I mean dog. - famulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But can they giggle?
- genconkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Again anyone raised it the 60's knew this from watching Mutley on "Wackie Racers"
- dolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Muttley!! :)
- chicomdk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always knew my dog was laughing at me now i have proof!!!!!

! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dogs laugh?
Duh, my girlfriend laughs all the time... - ScottyQuest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've known for years that dogs laugh. Ever since once, in a playful mood, I jumped down onto th back porch in front of him not knowing it was completely (and uniformly) iced over. I landed, kicked and flailed in all directions trying to establish a balance, then fell on my ass. When I looked up at him, I KNEW he was laughing at me. The expression, the eyes. No doubt the dog was laughing at me. Now I have the proof I needed to quell skeptical friends.
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and here's a couple of clips for everyone:
http://www.petalk.org/DogLaughSpect.html - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I knew dogs laughed. But make a cat laugh... evil creatures, those cats. Long live our Laughing Dog Overlords!
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That damn dog, he's been laughing at me the whole time?!!! Grrrr...I'll show him.
- wiredclimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hmmm... sounds like it was just a bad joke. I mean, why the 15 dogs were silent instead of laughing? =)"
Maybe they didnt get the joke :p - JimMarchwBBV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sometimes what we see as expression in a dog is something else.
If a dog is bounding towards you, how do you know if he's violent or playful?
The best indicator is the tongue. If it's loose and flapping in the breeze, it's out for max cooling (it's the radiator for his brain, literally!) and he does NOT plan on chomping anything. It's when it's IN that you have to suspect he's got plans for using his teeth.
The other end (the tail) is useless for making this determination. Some dogs are so psycho they're absolutely joyful at the opportunity to chow down on you. - locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So this cat walks into a bar.....meOW!"
Hiyoooooooooo, thank you ladies and gentlement. I'll be here all night. 2 drink minimum please. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Strange this reasearch was done in Spokane where I live.. And I've heard nothing of it.
Lol I live over on the West side and I haven't heard about this either. - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well it makes sense because supposedly dogs learn to bark from imitating their parents who imitated their parents who imitated their parents who imitated their parents who imitated their parents who imitated their parents who imitated humans
- aeoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also think that dogs smile and have a variety of useful/meaningful facial and body expressions. If you spend some time listening to your dog (speaking to other dog "owners" here), you may see it too.
- wavesmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What do you call it?
The Aristocrats! - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+++ digg for my 3 doggs.
I also want the sound clip so I can play it an see what happens. My pooches aren't too smart about real vs recorded sounds. They run to the door when a doorbell rings on the TV, and I can get the greyhounds to come to the computer by playing a recording of a little gizmo the greyhound trainers use to round up the dogs. - dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I laughed when I read the title"
hehe me too :D - lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@goat3: how do they make them laugh and what can you do to make your own dog laugh?
Walk around naked!
I also want an clip of the laughing dogs. - jedinate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've made my dog laugh. Took a pic, but didn't get a sound clip.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jedinate/23268158/ - unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet dogs are just discovering that humans laugh and that when a human laughs it makes other humans laugh too! It's amazing!

the world is a neat place - skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn this is great. Thanx for that petalk link!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone can find a sound clip that would be awesome!
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I already posted a sound clip, Billy...
http://www.petalk.org/DogLaughSpect.html - skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather have a scientist who schooled in *human* medicine than *vetrinary* medicine working on my health care, thank you very much.
For that matter, why would someone sit on thier ass complaining about it when THEY should be out finding a cure for it!! - NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My cat meows out words rather just a monotonous meow. He meows out the wod food when he wants some.
- JimMarchwBBV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FERRETS laugh.
Good god do they laugh a lot.
They laugh when you tickle 'em, they laugh when they've managed to steal the dog's favorite toy and go running off with it, they laugh when they manage to get the cat in a headlock and pin, they laugh when they steal your socks and you end up chasing 'em down the hall.
It sounds like rapid breathing combined with a gentle "squeaking" noise.
Charlie the cat had been raised by my brother's two ferrets. When they all moved out he was bored as heck. I brought a little baby albino fert home; Charlie had never seen a baby houseweasel or an albino for that matter, and he was about to kill it when he sniffed and realized it was one of those "skinnykitties" he liked to play with. He retracted his claws and gently batted around this little laughing ferret.
Well one problem with a baby fert is that he can really get into things. I had the back half of the apartment set up OK but the front half was a disaster, too many nooks'n'crannies. So I put up a 3ft wood board in the middle of the hall, figuring that would stop him cold.
Except I kept finding him up front.
One day I happened to catch his secret. Picture this tiny 6oz little weasel running up to the barrier and hopping a few times. Ain't no WAY he was gonna clear it.
So he runs over to Charlie, and hops a few times. Over to the barrier, more hopping. Over to Charlie and just stares at the cat.
Said cat gets up, casually stretches, picks Felix up by the scruff and carries him over the barrier in one bound. Lets him go, and you can bet that little booger laughed all the way across the living room rug :).
Unbelievable. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some people I guess assume that there are only 3 scientists in the world and when an announcement is made like this then that somehow means that the more important stuff is temporarilly ignored? I think that just shows a massive ignorance of the wider world view and sounds like dispersion just wanted to see his words in "print". That's a massive ego working there.
- hwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that tail wagging was a form of laughter.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I think is the most interesting is that dogs can laugh (ie. they understand humor). We laug for numerous reasons (something is funny, defense mecanisms, we're happy, sarcasm, etc.) But why do they laugh?
- vbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure, dogs laugh, but only at lowbrow stuff. A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants. No appreciation at all for witty banter. Philistines.
- DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are they calling it laughing? They're saying it makes this noise that calms other dogs. And then they're conflating that claim (which is supported by evidence) with the claim "dogs laugh." Probably just to generate attention.
- BigTuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And do you know what they're laughing about?
When the sounds are translated, the dogs are actually saying "haha! I can't believe anyone is actually FALLING for this!" - triad1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After hearing the clip, I recognize the sound. It's the same sound my Italian Greyhound makes when we play!
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone found any audio of this yet? My dog howls when I go to work and have to leave her in her crate.
