technologyreview.com — Synthetic Genomics: Genetically engineered organisms can more efficiently produce ethanol from cheap and abundant sources of biomass, such as agricultural waste. It could make ethanol cost competitive. The more one can fiddle with the ethanol-producing microbes to reduce the number of steps in the conversion process, the lower costs will be.

    That way you can take the plant output and refine it into diesel, gasoline and other products that our present infrastructure can already use - most cars can't run on alcohol (yet).
