Earl Grey, hot. - daviz0, on 11/11/2009, -1/+16I got scared then, I misread it as stargate replicator
- spriggig, on 11/11/2009, -1/+15This is the sort of tech that will make inventors out of all of us.
- swicken, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9I've played with fabricators before. It's pretty amazing to watch something you digitally designed get carved out in 3d.
I wouldn't exactly call it a star trek replicator though. It can't do the whole rearranging molecules to make anything bit. - philomatic, on 11/11/2009, -2/+11Everyone always jumps on warp drive and phasers, but I'm telling you holodecks and food replicators are where it's at!
- RealmDown, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6"Computer, lock down all Earl Grey tea recipes, hot or otherwise. Authorization RealmDown-5275alpha"
"Computer -- Begin new program and save under 'The Jennifer Love-Hewitt Triplets' " - tretter7, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6A form of this does exist--it's called metal laser sintering.
http://www.eos.info/en/products/metal-laser-sinter ... - Killbot2015, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5And soon we will see what happens when you actually can download a car.
- DaggerSecurity, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3it DID happen!!!
Thanks. - Culyt, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3And an electron beam!
- isny, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Tell it to the RIAA.
- Ne007, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4If you replicate anything it will all be stealing.
Take for example a Kraft cheese slice, if you replicate it you are stealing from Kraft.
If you replicate Great Value pistachios, you are stealing from Great Value.
That is the way it is with filesharing. All filesharing is is a replicating device. - thinboyslim, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrWHwHuWrzk
- TwilightMadness, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3Give it time :) It wasn't all that long ago that cellphones and this very internet was science fiction after all ;)
- sepelester, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2I'm surprised this didn't exist already. But, as always when a "simple" invention is made public, you think "I could have done that."
- MeccaYdna, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Some 3d printers can actually work with powdered metal, the models are then sintered to bring them to their normal state. You can print theoretically any metal, from bronze to stainless steel, titanium to tungsten, though the more exotic metals are very expensive in their usable powdered form.
- Paranor01, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2yeah, but sending information over the EM spectrum, is a bit different than replicating something from base molecules or M=C^2/E don't ya think?
- LiquidShield, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2basically the same concept, and process except the way it is done is completely different.
- Numbski, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Different, yes. Impossible? Time will tell, now won't it? :)
I'm sure splitting an atom seemed like a ridiculous concept at one point too, yet here we are. - Browndecrypt, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2While we may be centuries away from "replicating" organic objects, such as food, it's easy to see where this technology could go with the non-organic material. Very intriguing.
- Wuzizname, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2You know the guy that has to mop up the holodecks has the worst job - so sticky!
- kateweb, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1so this is new 3d printer that works with metals? wicked cool
- swicken, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1There have been fabs like this for a long time, none that I know of that could work with steel though.
- Killbot2015, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Reprap doesn't do metal.
- sepelester, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2I've seen the ones with plastic, clay, dough, even pastries and jam. That's why I assumed steel (and other metals) was trivial, considering it's usefulness.
- bluddystool, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1"This is my chicken sandwich and..coffee."
- JinxCrow, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I like how it still relies on a drawing to make anything. Yay art is still useful!
- LiquidShield, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Genius. I like the way you think.
- jmcenanly, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1It can't make the tea just yet, but it will make the tea pot.
- inactive, on 11/12/2009, -0/+0These are the real breakthroughs science should be pushing, imagine a world the material things were not as hard to come by for all.
- MeccaYdna, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1We use these all the time. I actually prefer making metal parts from 3d printed models since it's quite a bit cheaper.
The military has been using a similar method to this article, where a part is made by assembling extremely thin layers of alloy which are then irradiated to seal the gaps. For instance they can use it to assemble tank parts in the field. (although it would be EXTREMELY expensive to do that) - Numbski, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1Yeah. You just watch. It'll spit a *badly* replicated version of this guy in a speedo:

For all you FMA fans out there, you know what happens when you mess with human alchemy. :P - Numbski, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1No it isn't....
It's the same process, only using polymers instead of metals. :P - Paranor01, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1that is a robotic cutter.
the article talks of manufacturing through laying down layers of metallic alloy, melted at specific design points, then solidified.
much different process - breakaway, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2I've been seeing stuff like this on digg front page for years. I'll believe when they have an ACTUAL working prototype.
- innocentsinner, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1Isn't this the kind of thing they used to make those WoW figurines of your character?
- Myztry, on 11/11/2009, -4/+2I'm going to use that as a defence of my use of a meat slicer.
"I was just trying to replicate my ex-wife, your honour." - muleskinner, on 11/11/2009, -3/+1* If you replicated an item without compensation to the original designer.
Adding that sentence to your comparison is the only way to make it valid. Filesharing is not steeling, its replication without compensation to the original designers. - binhphan, on 11/11/2009, -4/+2I thought Replicators were from Stargate
- DaggerSecurity, on 11/11/2009, -5/+1Video, or it didn't happen.
- TheAbsintheHare, on 11/11/2009, -8/+3What part of this is new?
