- JenniferInMO, on 01/03/2009, -1/+16It is the ONLY logical option. For anyone with any doubts please read this article. It is well researched, comprehensive and well written. It's long, but it is one you should bookmark. It is a goto source for me: http://digg.com/political_opinion/How_America_Lost ...
- allowners, on 01/03/2009, -0/+14I think the war-on-drugs is disingenuous, just as the war-on-terror is. Both simply provide cover for other purposes.
- Sleeper4amoment, on 01/03/2009, -0/+11In Maine we have had a law for Medicinal Marijuana. I submitted an opinion from a local paper concerning the DA's insistance on bringing a person who has been with Maine Vocals since its inception to trial. He was aquitted.
The War on Drugs has been an excuse to utilize fascist principals on all of us. They trample on our right to privacy while wasting taxpayer money. It ends up putting a bunch of non violent otherwise respectful law abiding citizens in jail or at least in court only to capture a few headlines and justify their fascist budgets. - b8man99, on 01/03/2009, -0/+10Public is worried about cannabis because of media frenzy = Government commission a study into recommendations on what to do about cannabis = Government commission say there is no real health risk and that prohibition is doing more harm than good = Government minister says that although the report says it's safe, they know better, so feeding media frenzy. Repeat.
Someone drug test the governments. - normlsparky, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9Good article, with better links. One of the more interesting links:
http://www.beckleyfoundation.org/policy/cannabis_c ...
From the Beckley Foundation Website:
"In 1998, the international community agreed to a 10-year programme of activity for the control of illegal drug use and markets. These agreements were made at a United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) held in New York in June of that year, and a commitment was made to review progress in 2008. Clearly, the international community will not be able to report unequivocal success in anti-drug programmes at this review (to be held in 2009), as drugs are purer, cheaper, and more widely available than ever before. The laws themselves are often enforced in an arbitrary fashion, leading to discrimination against oppressed minorities. Nowhere is this more evident than with cannabis, used by a conservatively estimated 160 million people worldwide. There is increasing disagreement between governments on the appropriate policies to adopt. It is therefore essential that the process of review in 2009 be as transparent as possible, and that experts from the field have the maximum opportunity to engage with the government officials and politicians who will ultimately decide on future directions."
Evidently, the UN will be doing its 10 year review of the drug control policies agreed upon in 1998 later this year. With the huge amount of scientific data available during that period, it will be interesting to see if they will choose to base international drug policy upon facts. Especially with regards to Marijuana. A global move towards a policy based upon scientific facts and harm reduction may make it more feasible for decriminalization or legalization to happen here in the USA. - dtr300, on 01/03/2009, -1/+9I wish everyone in public office would be required to read that article (the one from Rolling Stone).
- JenniferInMO, on 01/03/2009, -1/+9I can't even get the people on Digg to read it. It is long and very fact heavy, but it is, in my book the definitive source and irrefutable evidence of the failure of the "War on Drugs" and the immediate need to legalize or at least decriminalize.
- ThatsNotPudding, on 01/03/2009, -1/+8How about THC added to Doritos? You know; two birds, one stone.
/pass the hacky, dude! - kemp34, on 01/03/2009, -0/+7"Other purposes" meaning tyranny.
- luminique, on 01/04/2009, -0/+6"Other purposes" meaning profit.
- novenator, on 01/03/2009, -0/+6"the harm cannabis can cause to the health and welfare of users and to society at large? " what harm?
- Jumboto, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4WTF? 2 cases where there have been marijuana overdoses? Damn, there went the biggest argument point ever.
If it were to be legalized then the only things stopping me would be my girl and my job.
I like the "war on drugs" on the harder drugs though. If they were legal I could say with a high degree of certainty that I would have been an addict right out of high school like some of my friends. I somewhat agree with the argument to let people decide what they want to put into their bodies but I also agree that most kids are stupid and will become addicted.
Also let me clarify on the I like parts of the "war on drugs". I do not agree with throwing addicts in jail if their only crime is possession. Meth labs and ***** should be cleaned up.
