Quantum Mechanics: New insights into “blinking” phenomenon
newsinfo.nd.edu — More than a century ago, at the dawn of modern quantum mechanics, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Neils Bohr predicted so-called “quantum jumps.” He predicted that these jumps would be due to electrons making transitions between discrete energy levels of individual atoms and molecules. Although controversial in Bohr’s time, [...]

- humanerror, on 07/03/2008, -3/+21Quantum Mechanics is so amazing. Probability waves, quantum states, sums of histories, and the craziest thing is, it's all really real! I just wish I could understand it.
- CadMasterAdam, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1sounds like your almost there! most people are going to have know idea what sum of histories means.
- Xtanto, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I 'know' what you mean!
- theenginedriver, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I work with quantum dots, which are now used for a diverse range of applications, and remarkably they are very poorly understood at the most fundamental level. They fluoresce very brightly, but "blink" on and off, for reasons that are still quite hazy. Very cool stuff indeed.
- scaliacheese, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1What is the typical duration of the blinks? Microseconds? Longer? If it is caused electrons jumping to higher energy levels and decaying back, thereby emitting toward the right tail of the emission spectrum, I wonder if it might be controlled by introducing impurities at a higher band gap than the QD material.

- madwaxer, on 07/03/2008, -17/+1i've got another idea, one much simpler.
there is a small star/plasma ball at the center of the earth which is sending out photons and electrons as it goes through its own little fission reactions. its strength is swamped by that of the sun. if you could fly over the north pole without getting shot down you'd see it for yourself.
go check out google earth for yourself, notice how the sea floor is so strangely stiched together like some bad linear smuging.
juge for yourself!
http://www.viewzi.com/search/videox3/hollow%20eart ...- KaiUno, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Doesn't look like it was your idea after all then.
- mr.gates, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9Madwaxer please stop being an idiot.
- Ramble, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I actually watched a video.
Some of the biggest pile of ***** I have ever seen. - toasterweasel, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Come on guys! He did ask to juge for ourselves....
- copypastry, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8I judge that video and its premise as dumb.
TIME IS A CUBE THE EARTH HAS 4 CORNERS YOU ARE EDUCATED STUPID. - Tiphys, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Really? I've flown over the north pole. Didn't get shot down, and certainly didn't see any evidence of a small star/plasma ball. If you really do buy into this hollow Earth nonsense, please, please for your own sake; get educated. You owe it to yourself.
- williane, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Because Google Earth is one big snapshot taken at the exact same time of day all the way around the world? Maybe because of weather conditions they have to map areas at different times and on different days and stitch it together? Or maybe its your little plasma ball.

- noahhoward, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Not at all like Toshiru Wang aka "Radiator Ninja"
- Justice101, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10Ninja God is really really hard to spot...
- Ramble, on 07/03/2008, -0/+13I assume these jumps are to go back in time and put right what once went wrong?
- SidU, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1I thought these are the jumps that people ridicule Quantum Mechanics for; where you have an electron consuming energy to transition between energy levels and all of sudden the electron that was to move up isn't there but is Moscow.
- mindlessknight, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7Where is who's God now? I didn't read anything about God in this article.
- Xtanto, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7Exactly! HA! God is clearly not there!

- diggydougie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1They talk about using this phenomenon to take better pictures at the cellular level. While they don't really understand the underlying principle causing it. Understanding it will probably lead to greater purposes than better photography.
- Neptunesbeard, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Like ??
- diggydougie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Don't know until they find it. But it's at the fundamental level, so it could be huge.
- Neptunesbeard, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Like ??

- mr.gates, on 07/03/2008, -4/+1You don't even have to fly over the North Pole this whole thing is 100% bulls-hit, if it were true it would mean that a large majority of every theory in physics, astronomy, chemistry from Newton onward is wrong. Madwaxer I don't have too even see your stupid video to make an opinion its like saying you think the earth is flat and if you just watch this video I can judge for myself, I judge before I saw the video and your idea holds zero credence and counters a large majority of findings the human race has accumulated over centuries our theory's for the universe have created computers, tapped the power of the atom, sent men to the moon and even measured the age of the universe, and your saying that regardless of how succesful all of that is it is wrong based on some crazy unsubstantiated 'evidence'?
Its not the 16th century and even if it was you would hardly have an excuse this is just stupid, but please don't just ignore me actually take some time to learn to think critically and you will discover there is a real universe out there that is just as interesting as these fairy tales people like to create and force feed to the public. I recommend starting out with something light and fun buy Carl Sagans book a Demon Haunted World and while you are at it try listening to a few episodes of the Skeptics Guide to the Universe Podcast. Listen; Read: Learn. But please don't believe. - Spetz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Holy *****! I may have just found the answer to my research problem on Digg! It's in a vaguely related field, but what this guy has done may have described my phenomenon. I'll need that paper - terrible referencing in the article, it doesn't even give the paper title or journal volume number/page information.
- homescrubb, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1i know it was just a "progress report" and i am very familiar with the scripting of these, however it just read like a bunch of fluff- no real information here. not buried... but not dugg either..
- thecatcantalk, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1No, no...it's actually about Ron Paul, you see....
