- directrix13, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2Did the census taker once try to test you?
- weizbox, on 06/26/2008, -3/+1mustache ride?

- conversekid, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6Wait, what?
- seanmx, on 06/26/2008, -8/+2I'm glad the Mars company is doing so well that they can throw money down the drain finding out the DNA code of chocolate.
- Gutterpunk, on 06/26/2008, -5/+2And by "we" you mean who? You are CEO of Mars or something?
- UnglueD, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6They're a company, not the government. I could form a company and start projects focusing on hookers and booze. In fact, screw the company.
- itsthebrod, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6You don't understand the concept of a free market do you? If you don't like it, stop buying their *****. Nevertheless, I fail to see how a chocolate-producing company creating superior cocoa crops in the future is "throwing money down the drain."
- Gutterpunk, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7Oh you sly bastard, you have edited your post after we replied to it.
- andstone, on 06/26/2008, -6/+4Interesting that they would reveal it for all to use. Could this be the future for all livings things on Earth?
... Probably not. - ZephyrNinety, on 06/26/2008, -8/+3...Why?
- mikephimikephi, on 06/26/2008, -8/+3Why wasn't this done before the human genome project???
Seems far more advantageous. - d1ckinabox, on 06/26/2008, -7/+4can we not just stick with regular chocolate?
everything doesn't have to be genetically modified just to be better- itsthebrod, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7What the ***** is "regular chocolate"? You do realize most every fruit and vegetable you already eat has been "genetically modified" through selective breeding and grafting, right? These are what "real bananas" look like in the wild: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Inside_a_wild-t ...
- bono4u, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1There are still differences between selective breeding and genetically engineering. In nature it is hardly known that animals would f**k plants, in genetically engineering they take parts from species to other species from plants animals to plants and vise versa. If you think that should be done, perhaps you have not the imagination of the problems which could result from that.

- bgrah449, on 06/26/2008, -8/+2That's not chocolate, that's doodoo baby!
- Spade135, on 06/26/2008, -7/+3My guess is so they can patent certain varieties of chocolate bean, or make GM modified versions that are patentable.
- bosssmiley, on 06/26/2008, -6/+2"Reveal your genetic secrets tree! I command it!" - Forrest Mars
(an appropriate name if ever there was one) - hempydave, on 06/26/2008, -10/+6Chocolate, making sexually frustrated women
Fat sexually frustrated women - cashbondho, on 06/26/2008, -6/+1Right above an article about how the country is full of diabetic peeps.... hilarious!
- jessethouin, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5Diabetics can have cacao, just not sugar. And good cacao is incredibly healthy.
- leontes, on 06/26/2008, -7/+2Will this lead to genetically modified vegetables that tastes like yummy chocolate?
- ansecos, on 06/26/2008, -9/+4New Mars Chocolate: Now Genetically Enhanced to be 50% sweeter, 50% darker, and 50% more expensive!
- swizzcheez, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1100% more something for 50% more cost -- bargain!
- SSUK, on 06/26/2008, -6/+1I guess the people at Mars must be bored...
- polalion, on 06/26/2008, -4/+13Why bother? It's all about the sugar and milk anyway.
And the caramel. Mmmmm... Excuse me. *goes off* - aDJsavedmylife, on 06/26/2008, -4/+4I like the assumption that it will probably be trivial when the human genome took 15 years to decode. Just because Cocoa is a simpler organism doesn't necessarily mean it's genome will be shorter. Rice for example is twice as long as ours. Human genome is about the same length as grass'.
Just sayin'.- Gutterpunk, on 06/26/2008, -2/+1Your ass is grass!
Literally

- AMD64MM, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1Chocolate Researcher: "And they thought HUMAN DNA was messed up!"
- TheSexyGeek, on 06/26/2008, -1/+3Ok, so who's gonna sequence Marijuana? . . . . . anyone?
- jebus123, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2is that what the kids are calling it these days?
- Marijuana, on 06/26/2008, -1/+3You ranggggggggg?
- drgirlfriend, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2While they are 'researching' marijuana they might also get the urge to 'research' chocolate simultaneously. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.
- bono4u, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1smoke with chocolate flavor would be interesting
- YoureAllSoDumb, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2I like how this is directly above the "8% of Americans are diabetic" article. Genetically perfected chocolate isn't going to be great for anyone...
- drgreenberg, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Misleading title, as the cocoa plant is not the same as the final product named chocolate (just as sequencing a cow's genes shouldn't be advertised as finding the DNA of ice cream).
- gdha, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Can't wait to see where this heads...
- PSotter, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3Seems a lot of people here think that basic research has no practical value. I'm here to: a. be "that nerd"; b. say that the science underlying secondary metabolites produced by the cocoa bean is far more interesting that what's happening on 4chan (or whatever); c. say that without plant genetics and classical plant breeding, you might not even be here for the dearth of food in the world.
- MarshalBanana, on 06/26/2008, -2/+0POINTLESS
like my post - sewerraccoon, on 06/26/2008, -0/+0Is this the beginning of my salivary glands secreting chocolate flavored saliva? Course you'd probably get sick of chocolate after awhile.
- PatrickTulskie, on 06/26/2008, -1/+21. Snip taste from chocolate.
2. Inject into lettuce.
3. ???
4. Profit. - onelikeseabass, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1chocolate's
FTFY - wishninja, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2coco marijuana plants would be nice.
- Belin, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1The bacteria in my stomach say the chocolate genome is better left a mystery, but that is only because they are fundamentalists.
- ArtieAlligator, on 06/26/2008, -0/+0Finally... Scientists doing USEFUL research! :p
- xGuerrillaRadio, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Please please PLEASE say this will lead to rabbits with chocolate in their DNA. Just imagine- chocolate rabbits. Literally. Mmmmmm...
