- Sonizel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18frozen water...but thats called ice
- bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18This is sort of off topic, yet related to mvdde's reply; I'm a chef and one day I decided to have one of my noob cooks look for the dehydrated water crystals that I had sworn were stashed away in dry storage. After a half an hour of actual searching he came to report his failure in procuring said dehydrated water. I then produced one of those inflatable packing "pillows", (you know, the clear bags filled with air)...and told him I had already found one. I then told him to take this pillow of crystalized H2O over to the sink, empty it into a container, and fill it with fresh water. I explained to his delight that the water would double over time and that within this bag was a water "stretching" medium, used for conservation of water and recycling of hydrogen molecules. To this day he still believes it to be true.......Go ahead , thumb me down, I deserve it. ^5

"Liquid water may sound redundant, but planetary scientists insist on using the qualifier, for solid or vaporous water won't do." - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Water can also be plasma.
http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/academy/universe/fourth_matter.html - unholy1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17Nah, water isn't valuable enough yet (give it a couple of decades or so).
On the other hand... if OIL were found on Mars you can be your life that Uncle Sam (and any other developed nation with a space program) would be trying a hell of a lot harder to get there. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It really doesn't have much to do with evolution, it's just pretty simple logic.
All life forms ( that we know of ) need liquid water. Therefore, a planet WITHOUT liquid water cannot support life. Which also leads to: A planet WITH liquid water could support and have life. This is useful information for a couple of reasons: It's far easier to look for planets with water than it is to look for planets with life in the search for life outside earth, and the presence of liquid water means that a colony on said planet could be possible in the future. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well...I'd have about fifty cents.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If the theory of evelution is right then organism can live there, meaning orgaisms can be living on other planets in the universe.
Also water is needed to survive if we ever go there for fuel and food - shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5mvdde is right, do you ever say "I will have a glass of water with extra water" when you want more ice. Water is the liquid form of H2O so don't bury the man when he makes a valid point. I need to go eat my soup while its still steaming.. Oh wait sorry I mean while its still watering.
- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You'll know this is true if you never hear about it again...
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously the result of martian warming. I think we all know what's to blame here. Not volcanos or the sun. Its humans. I don't know how we're causing it but I'm sure the commie libs who visit this website and post story after pagan story about how automobile emmissions are causing Mother Earth to have hot flashes will come up with a way to blame it on corporations and/or technological progress.
- StrawberryFrog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I long for a Mars-water story that isn't "possible", "could have", "once had", "might have had" or "may be". I'm getting pretty tired of Mars-water stories in general though.
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone else feel that the notion that water is a requirement for a planet to sustain life is a bit presumptuous? Sure that's the way it works here, but who is to say there aren't organisms on other planets that don't require water at all?
I found this wikipedia entry after writing the above, it's pretty interesting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_biochemistry - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow.. more space debri.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Does anyone else feel that the notion that water is a requirement for a planet to sustain
>life is a bit presumptuous? Sure that's the way it works here, but who is to say there
>aren't organisms on other planets that don't require water at all?
i think it would be presumptuous to think we could figure out whats needed without see something new and seeing how it functions. so the surest bet is to look for places that we can in some sense compare to things we find here. like deep ocean vents... no light. antarctic... cold... harsh... extremophiles. anyway. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because life as we know it has to have water. everything else is pretty much optional. i was thinking the other day... [dangerous] what if the safest place in the solar system to live is under 3 miles of ice in the ocean of Europa. plenty of water to make into necessities.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. This title was misleading as well, apparently "appear to indicate" now means "it's a fact".
- agpc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Come on guys, didn't you know this water was placed on Mars by God 6000 years ago to test our faith?
Just like dinosaur bones on earth!
Carbon Dating isn't real because everyone who does it has an agenda. I learned that from the Sopranos. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you would be amazed at how much skeptical research goes into this before making a claim like this
thats why they use words like probable and possible.
water is important.. eventually we will have to leave this planet and we will need water sources.
If you are going to colonise mars it isnt pratically to send water 50 million miles to mars.
Right now water is one of the most expensive things in the space station, we need alot even when you reuse every little bit you can.
also water is needed for life(we think) and if we find water and no life the religious people can snicker and if we do find life it will change our view of the universe. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/press/opportunity/20040716a/16-JF-02-crop-B170R1.jpg
the larger version of the photo - arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude. With guys like you, Europe would sure be an even crowdier place right now.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If New Mexico is so similar to Mars, why don't we set up a colony there? Probably be harder for NASA to crash there too (although I wouldn't put it past them). Think about it, we could pretend theres no air, and bounce around in spacesuits, and maybe send a few robots that move 6 inches a day! And when the robots solar panels get dirty, send out an intern with some windex!
- arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The Spaniards did that already.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3if i had a dime for every time i saw a story with this headline
- arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, you can always jump in your spaceship and go check it out for yourself.
- tnsimonson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"This is ice. This is what happens to water when it gets too cold. This? This is Kent. This is what happens to people when they get too sexually frustrated . . ."
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why is finding water in space such a big deal? There are ice rings around Saturn and other planets, obviously there is water in space, so who cares?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1News update, Bush is gonna get impeached. (I hope so)
http://www.digg.com/links/Vermont_calling_for_Bush_s_Impeachment - Steelfox, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9Yellow water, but thats called piss.
- JoeBass85, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Maybe one day when we pour another trillion dollars into the Mars program, and an astronaut lands Mars, he'll get thirsty and need a drink....lets just hope it kills him and maybe we won't have to hear about any more Mars-water stories again.
- Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5"I bring Bush into everything because hating Bush is cool"
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I found a rock on mars.
- john117, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0A "thread?"
- mvdde, on 10/12/2007, -21/+7"Liquid water". Is there any other kind?
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -25/+8once we get a man on mars he can just release his piss-bag and walla...water on mars.
- ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -28/+4Water on Mars? Next thing you know Bush is going to claim that Mars has WMDs and is a thread to the great US of A.
