I assume you are from US, do you read or comprehend much English? Or is it merely another form of racism? Mostly English is understood in US but often there are problems if one does take to English pronounciations or word usages, especially over telephone.

Don't be too sure. Someone sleeping can be awakened but not someone pretending to sleep, a proverb in my language. There are millions of tourists out of rich nations swarming everywhere, few learn, some are like ducks with water - they can brush off any knowledge or information they might come across if it is contrary to their prejudices - and some do this quite deliberately too.

- TheGreatBelow, on 08/23/2008, -3/+2Yea, what's your point? Valve is one of the best devs out there.
- RoboCafaz, on 08/23/2008, -3/+1I know! And they coined the term Portal before anyone else started using it!

- Puirtabeul, on 08/23/2008, -8/+8I in no way want to diminish the sheer awesomeness of this find, but I'm sort of irked at the way any major cultural find in archeology has to be reported with a sugar coat of, "And Experts somewhere think that this logically explains those crazy myths those backwater [insert ancient civilization]s might have had!" Seriously, Western Civilization. Knock it off. It's condescending and in 400 years it's going to look like geocentricism or the idea that light is projected from the eyes. There are more than two ways (literal & 100% fiction) to interpret myths and symbols, and these structures probably played an integral role in a third way of understanding (ritual and participation) that has, for the most part, lost meaning entirely in the west.
- reyesz, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1For explanative comments go to reddit
- Kzoo, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2In popular media, I would agree. Normally I wouldn't be able to say anything more than that but I've actually been researching this particular field for the past few months (along with other South, Central and North American groups as far as they relate to my topic). Some of the really old stuff (before the turn of the last century) and pretty much anything I've read from the 15th century Spanish explorers tend to take the "these savages have absolutely ridiculous and horrid beliefs" stance, but most of the scholarly literature is really quite good about proper presentation/interpretation.

- VdgX, on 08/23/2008, -6/+8Portal jokes are irreverent to this story. We all love portal. We love it's quotes. But this story has no vague connection to the game aside from the word "Portal" in the title. That's sort of like having a conversation that goes like "Do you smell that?" "The cake is a lie, lol." "...." And then you'll have no friends. So please only quote Portal when it actually makes sense. Failure to do so will force me to hate you, and that would terrible for your self-esteem.

- deeflo23, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3wow, i just got back from chichen itzá in yucatan. it was truly amazing. i believe its been recently made a new wonder of the world. about 2 years ago i actually got to climb it. it was such an amazing spiritual experience. i cant wait to see what develops with these findings.
- insanekoz, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1I climbed it too.
Twice.
Not a spiritual experience in any way, other than holding on to the rope next to the steps and praying for dear life.- deeflo23, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1hahaha that reminds me of my sis. she swore she was going to die climbing it.
- DrJG, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1"I climbed it too.

Spiritual experiences are just that - spiritual.
Mimicry of physical part does not guarantee the spiritual part of an experience, or else every yoga class would result in manufacturing guaranteed Buddhas by hundreds every year.
Think intellectual - not everyone attending a class can go on to become a top intellectual, academic, professional, creator, or prize winner. Sitting and taking notes and so forth does not produce the same result.
Think emotional. Love is not guaranteed by any process either. Nor is happiness.
Spiritual is another dimension, as intellectual or emotional, apart from physical; though not quite unconnected, it does not follow from physical action or exercise as a guaranteed result any more than the other two.
Also, if you did not have it in one time or place it does not mean you are completely incapable of it - only that you were not open to it then.
- insanekoz, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1I climbed it too.
