- narduk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+110This is eye rolling dumb.
- xombiefarts, on 10/12/2007, -6/+93Hello, 911? It's Quagmire. Yeah, it's caught in the window this time.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -14/+94yea, so i guess everyone in the world are retards cuz they watched people procreate, lol
Dr. Mary Anne Layden needs some dick....badly. - leszek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52of course humans are addicted to sex.
Blame evolution. - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51All sorts of easy rewards (easily repeatable and not requiring work and/or accomplishment) are generally damaging to a person's mind, leading to demotivation and addiction, and sometimes other health problems, but they feel rewarding nonetheless. Drugs, food, porn, entertainment, etc. all lead a person to live a life of mediocrity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47True, even monkeys will pay to look at porn...
- pigwiggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43Stop, rewind, reverse; the image/reward response for cocaine addicts was found to be similar to the image/reward response for sex. This says a bit of something about the human reaction to cocaine addiction and near to nothing about our sex drive.
This is a good example of how a prevailing social bias (or perhaps the researchers agenda) can lead to an erroneous interpretation of data. - biffen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42My cousin looked at porn once. His entire head melted. Instantly.
True Story. - MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39No kidding. So...all this says is that sex is as good as cocaine? Only it doesn't tear up my nasal lining, shrivel my nuts, and make my heart explode? Fantastic!
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30At least your right arm gets stronger as you get dumber.
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36I call *****.
Ive been watching porn for 3 years and urm... Im.... opposite of bad?... you know. Oh yeah, Fine!
-Darrel. - ha$$le, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Actually, my left arm gets stronger. I need my right hand to rewind, fast forward and pause.
- toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Yeah porn causes brain damage ... mostly in those that oppose it :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+38Agreed. I've been watching porn for many years and I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm perfectly fine.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -14/+39Porn also causes hair to grow on your palms.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25No kidding. Are you supposed to close your eyes during sex to avoid seeing anything sexually arousing? WTF?!? These people probably have sex through a hole in a sheet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33Biology has fake *****, and likes it in the ass.
- jgreath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Exploitation? Those women CHOOSE to go into that career, and the almost always get paid more than their male counterparts.
Also, what about the female owned/operated adult film studios? Jill Kelly and Jenna Jameson are both in this category, yet they probably don't think of themselves as having been exploited or as exploiting there current female actors.
The notion that porn is just the exploitation of women is outdated. - joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28a cocaine addict wants cocaine... their brain scan reveals the fact that they see something they want.
you show someone an attractive nude person from the opposite sex, and i'd call you gay if your brain scan didn't show that you wanted what you were seeing.
where do people get the funding for this research. i need to find them so i can waste their money too, and punch them in the stomachs for being so stupid. - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23jubaju:
Exactly.
I even hear, this is a secret by the way, that if you drink too much of, ya know, water, it can kill you... yea, thats right... it can kill you! I even heard from the friend of a friend of a cousin of mine that if you stay under water for like... 5 minutes.... you will die! OMG! BAN WATER! - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23So she is saying porn addicts get turned on by porn. And people who aren't porn addicts get turned on by porn.
I smell a nobel peace prize in her future! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Whatever happened to everything in moderation? Of course, if you're going to look at porn all the day long, you're going to experience adverse affects to your mental, emotional, social, etc. health. It's the same if you do drugs. Now, I don't advocate doing drugs at all, but you could take any issue and say it will adversely affect you by doing it too much.
- EdShroomhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I think those who so strongly oppose something like porn, really harbor a secret lust for it that is above the national norm. This results in a self-loathing and hatred for themselves, because their upbringing has warped them so much, that they believe that liking porn is wrong. All normal, well-adjusted people enjoy porn. People get turned on by looking at it. It's natural. But these people want to suppress these feelings ... pretend that they're not there. Hypocrites. Just get over it and realize it's ok to like porn. If they did this, they'd be a lot happier, and a lot less f*ked up mentally.
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20All this does is confirm something that anyone bothering to take a cursory glance at related information already knows: Both drugs like cocaine and sexual activities release dopamine into the body via the hypothalamus. I hate when moronic articles like this come out with obviously biased agenda.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Wow. News flash: People like sex. Images of sex excite people. It's not brain damage.
Here is a bet. Go to a church where some evangelicals are preaching away and do some PET scans on both the preachers and the flock. Guess what you'll find? That's right... changes in the brain related to increases in dopamine and serotonin.
All this "proves" is that the hypocritical moral police in Washington are trying to find any excuse possible to ban porn. Porn isn't obscene, these people are. - dasc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yes. This shows that a normal person takes pleasure in looking at naked people.
- Minos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Sadly, biology and nature took a back seat when morality became hip.
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17There isn't anything even remotely credible in this story.
"Ask a shrink who treats porn addicts about the effect of pornography, and she’ll respond that they are disastrous."
Of course she will. She's not a disinterested party, the more people worried about the effects of porn, the more business she gets.
"many of her patients, rather than improving their sex lives with porn, suffer sexual dysfunction."
How many times does this need to be repeated? *Correlation does not imply causation.* Ever think that the link is there because people suffering from sexual dysfunction tend to seek out porn more than people who have reasonable sex lives?
"And from an expert on internet behavior, we have the “estimate” that “up to ten percent” porn viewers stop having sex with their wives"
The "up to" statistic is a dead giveaway for somebody trying to mislead you. Think about it. He could have rock solid evidence that no porn viewers whatsoever stop having sex with their wives, and he could still truthfully state "up to ten percent". "Up to ten percent" means between zero and ten percent, but used in this way, it's intended to make people believe that ten percent stop having sex with their wives.
"It cited the statistic that a study in 2000 found that 200,000 Americans were “internet sex addicts,” defined as spending 11 hours or more per week online looking at porn."
How many Americans spend that amount of time watching television? I'd argue that if porn is displacing some of that TV time, that's a *good* thing from a health perspective - they are bound to burn more calories "enjoying" porn than sitting motionless in front of the TV.
I still don't see *anywhere* in the article that mentions brain damage beyond the headline. I see somebody saying that you can see the reaction in people's brains, but that's not brain damage.
I'm not saying porn's wonderful and that it can't possibly be harmful, but it does attract a hell of a lot of unscrupulous people with agendas to rally against it using dishonest means. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Seriously. When did "inherent biology" become a bad word?
- TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Did anyone actually read the article? It's actually a commentary against mainstream media irresponsibly reporting issues as if they were based in good science. The article is calling the "porn causes brain damage" reporting total BS:
"A serious report on a contentious issue needs real science and social science. News outlets should stop alluding to science with no basis, and stop asking porn therapists about porn addiction." - jgreath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Porn does all that? I've seen quite a bit of it since I was 12 and I don't think it's affected me much at all. Let's see...
Psychological damage: I had to have a psych. eval. for my current job, obviously I'm not too screwed up because I am now employed.
Emotional damage: Not sure about this one as I'm not too emotional. I think what's more emotionally damaging is growing up in a home almost devoid of emotion.
Relationship damage: I first started dating in high school, and I'm actually still with the first girl I ever dated. We've been together for almost 6 years and are getting married next year, so my ability to have a relationship hasn't been damaged.
Intellectual damage: An individual is obviously not the best judge of their own intelligence, but since I earned a BS in Computer Science, started working as a software engineer, and am currently working on my Masters in CS. I don't think my intellect has suffered much from my porno-viewing.
Porn is no more damaging than watching reality TV - wait, no, bad example... - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"sex is as good as cocaine? Only it doesn't tear up my nasal lining, shrivel my nuts, and make my heart explode? Fantastic!"
You've obviously never been to Singapore... - DougPenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"he will not be a sexual tiger but a pathetic shell of a man that has a no drive to please his wife or find one if he doesn't have one"
Considering they take half your ***** when they divorce you for no reason, I'll stick with my pr0n and hookers, thank you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8In related news, CHASTITY CAUSES FRIGID BITCHINESS
- mrnukem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Maybe just bad porn causes the damage?
- cure13, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14sounds like these people are victims of porn based on the brain damage they appear to have.
- 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10...that introduction isn't what the article is about at all.
- kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Nobody masterbates it kills kittens remember?
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It basically means that the idiots who ran this so called experiment dont understand the difference between correlation and causation. You can usually tell bad science from good science when they talk only about correlation and dont mention causation.
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Oh good Lord. Suddenly I'm ashamed to be from Pennsylvania. :-/
- Kolar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sex (in moderation) is healthy and having an "addiction" to porn is nothing unless it disrupts your wok/education but I wouldn't go as far as saying it is anything compared to coke or any lesser drug.. it's a biological function not some kind of substance abuse.
Politics of the western countries should try to focus more on violent crimes and the ills of this world and not micromange everyones lives. - oddball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"VERY few women make it out of the porn industry with a good bill of mental health."
Because very few go in with one..... - tripm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make the following assumption:
Mary Anne Layden will never let me snort coke off of her back. - LMNOP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10i can live with it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I need to start a new porn site called braindamage.sex
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If porn and prostitution were legal and accepted without stigma, sex crimes would likely fall.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a higher percentage of girls are raped in North America than in Africa? I seriously doubt that. the United States is the worst place to be a woman? puh-leeeze. someone other than a champagne socialist, please try to convince me of that.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, I don't know about you guys (and girl), but I'm addicted to Digg.
I just can't stop. Maybe they should analyze my brain for brain damage caused by Digg - alarm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Exactly, I doubt anyone actually read the article.
