- manzplan, on 12/05/2008, -5/+44the United Nations warned YEARS ago that human overpopulation, aside from nuclear threat, is our NUMBER ONE THREAT to our own continued existance - yet this fact is largely ignored.
people think "oh there is plenty of room in Montana... we could easily fit more people there..."
okay suppose we housed 1 billion people in Montana... where do you think we would get the beef/cattle that is currently grazing there?
more people = more demand for space/ food/ housing (do we have enough trees?) = more pollition, more stresss.... - freezerburn666, on 12/05/2008, -0/+29dammit, my mom should have had an abortion
- socialexpert, on 12/05/2008, -4/+29If the population is increasing at this pace, I think, it could be near about 9 to 10 billion.

- BeShirtHappy, on 12/05/2008, -0/+21I agree that there are too many variables to consider. But I'll guess 9.5 billion. :)

- CTabuga, on 12/05/2008, -6/+26I say we all die 2012.
- edrodgers731, on 12/05/2008, -5/+20The UN has also warned Neven Jurica of Croatia FOR YEARS to remove leftover lunch items from the break room before Friday afternoon so the refrigerator can get it's weekly cleaning. We all have to work together to keep the break room smelling fresh.

- edrodgers731, on 12/05/2008, -0/+10Okay, all kidding aside..
When do you want the enforced population reduction to begin? What is the UN going to do about this? Is it their job to enforce population control as a group over independent countries?
The population will self correct if necessary. It is not possible to change the breeding habits of a group of people UNITL it becomes unbearable to the people breeding and those around them.
When China becomes too crowded, they will introduce offspring restrictions. OH, WAIT! THEY ALREADY DID! The same will eventually happen in most over-crowded nations.
The Earth itself is not sustainable. Just finish your little biological processes and don't worry about it. - bklynation, on 12/05/2008, -2/+11i have printed out this article as my defense at the family christmas dinner to the question... so when are you going to bless us with grandchildren?
- brainovermind, on 12/05/2008, -2/+11Just 1.
We should all easily be uploaded into one huge crowdsourcing program by then. Our goal? Finding new information to Digg once. - kingmanic, on 12/05/2008, -0/+9I have my money riding on a Zombie Apacolypse. I have prepared by befriending a black guy (first to die), a annoying and suspicious fat guy (second to last to die), an airhead cheerleader (second to die), a likable old lady (third to die, but most touching death), and a sensible everyman (Last to die). I just have to try really hard to be the tough and empathetic woman so I can survive it.
That last bit is the hard part since I'm a man. - captainbethany, on 12/05/2008, -1/+10Who are having all of these babies??
- rodted2, on 12/05/2008, -1/+10You know, I was reading something about that. The Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012, so did the Aztecs, and the bible code, I think a few other cultures used 2012 as a cataclysmic event as well, but I'm not sure who.

- Jonlennon1973, on 12/05/2008, -1/+8I see another world war that is going to reduce the population considerably across the world. India alone has over 1.5 billion souls, and they are certainly gonna have a blow out with Pakistan. Consider the problems in the Middle East, Korea, Africa, etc. Now I am sure I will get buried on this one, but if history tells me anything we are long overdue for a great war.
- Gunshock, on 12/05/2008, -7/+14yeah seriously. and we need a limit on the amount of kids a couple can have.
- Fetttson, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7"The population will self correct if necessary."
Natural population control is called starvation. - sodade, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7"When did I get to China?"
When you allowed rampant overbreeding. - kplo, on 04/01/2009, -2/+9Carry the one, divide by three...hmm...5,457?
- FishHammer, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7Dugg in support of this notion.
- iamghost, on 12/05/2008, -4/+11You need to have 3 kids to replace yourself and your wife (or life partner). It seems like more and more in America people are having only 1-2 kids. People used to have more kids because they were able to help you survive but now the less children you have the easier it is to get by. As more and more countries become developed I'm sure this trend will continue and we might see a more controlled population growth.
- Icetype, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6Reloading!
- Benjigga, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6What is the event that requires a divide? Rick Astley giving us up?

- wildgilbert, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Wow this one is dugg down? I guess that's what you get for giving a straight answer!
- edrodgers731, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5I agree. The United States (without considering immigration) does not have a population problem. We are self sustainable for the foreseeable future.
It's economies where more kids means more $.02 per day at the shoe factory, or cultures that think they have to breed like rabbits to push their population numbers up to overrun the Israelis.
Perhaps this problem will self correct eventually, when developING countries finally develop. - pw378, on 12/05/2008, -1/+6You logic fails. It only takes 1 doomsday prediction to be correct.
Nobody will be around to say "99% of doomsday predictions were wrong." - MDKAOD, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Dugg for my mom almost had an abortion!
- kingmanic, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Sadly, half of everyone is below average!!
/s - jeexbit, on 12/05/2008, -1/+6It's not the end of the world, it's the end of a world age. It's also tied in to the precession of the equinox. Good info here: http://alignment2012.com/
- cybrguy, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Wow, an optimist. After the zombie invasion/plague, nuclear war, and the fact that we don't have a company named Vault-Tec to "Secure our future" I would say we will have 1500000 Super Mutants, 5 million Zombies/Ghouls, and 150000 humans with insufficient ammo to to kill them off.
- sadisticmind, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5its just an end of a cycle. its suppose to be a good thing. kind of like a New Years party or when Obama got elected ("Change") i doubt that the world is going to end. most Mayan archeologist think it was a misinterpretation.
- InfiniteNothing, on 12/05/2008, -2/+7I hear that 100% of doomsday predictions thus far have been incorrect. What make you think your tiny span of <100 years is so important.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5ah yeah, in physics we discussed how even now food output for staple foods such as rice, can not meet demand now. It wasn't such a big issue years ago, before China and India decided to start trying to live more like western nations, and I don't blame them for that, but with the size of their populations, it's a scary turn of events. Especially with China eliminating their One Child policy in a couple more years, which has had a lot of consequences, but has also been beneficial in controlling world population. No one wants to discuss overpopulation because the only way to stop it is to force some kind of "sterilization" or policy like China on to people and unfortunately, everyone believes they have they have the right to have as many children as they want, without giving a 2nd thought to their ability to care for those children or the impact on the world. There are a lot of negatives to a "one child" policy, but I think eventually, countries will be forced to inforce something like that because we are literally eating ourselves out of a planet.
