Did you seriously just say that? - mr.gates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1---

Please say you are joking 1: you cannot collect the plasma without completely negetivigating any forward momentum you created, and 2, plasma is just REALLY REALLY hot anything, as to what material they derive the plasma I don't know, but if I said "Physicist create frozen material engine!" plasma just sounds dangerous so you suddenly freak out, its not dangerous and it cools quickly, if you were kidding, sorry about the flame ^^ - Hexman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1quote: "Now we're going to go spweing plasma all over our earth? Dude, do you even know what plasma is?? It's not chemical residue like the one our current rocket technology spits out. It's just really hot atoms going really fast. Besides, it puts so little real thrust it would only be used in deep space - Its not meant to make the ship uber-fast, just to thrust longer and cheaper.
Check this link out so you can better understand what plasma propulsion is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4527696.stm - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yaaaa.. go look for rocks...
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cause its about time we stop using that old school Ion Propulsion technology.
- hotsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The BBC has a Sci/Tech article on this, with a simple explanation of the plasma drive. More details of the technology on Wikipedia, of course. Cool stuff.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't this an interplanetary device? Thrusters and such? I am looking to see FTL approaches myself. This may be the cats meow, but getting to Mars in only 45 days, does not do it for me.....

ya - kl9470spin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty Interesting, +Digg
Sumday we could travel to mars and back in a day!! xP
That'd be neat! - dbsanfte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People just don't understand that, for the most part, their individual lives amount to squat (and a good obit if you're lucky), and it's humanity itself we need to work on improving. This comes through space travel.
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We just need some dilithium crystals...............
- ICECommander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Plasma engineering student reporting in.
- grizwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0keep in mind chembro .. 90% of these people are under 17
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow. So, we have the technology to build plasma propulsion engines, yet we're still spending our time debating about abortion and which religion is best.
We are really holding ourselves back from what we could truly become as a race. - Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote - Now we're going to go spweing plasma all over our earth? I don't think so. no digg (unless you have an EFFICIENT recepticle to collect all of the plasma used in the propulsion)
Qoute - Wow. Ever hear of radiation. Thats cruzin through space and Earth all the time. Good thing we have an atmosphere to help us
lmao hell yes go atmoshpere! man ppl r great. umdigger u took the words right outa my mouth. - LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote - Now we're going to go spweing plasma all over our earth? I think it would mainly be used as thrusters during in space operation. Traditional propulsion would likely be used to get to orbit. - Powder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^starmanjones
Where did u hear that from? - Powder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like NASA's version better - http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/news/2003/news-VASIMR.asp
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i''ve also heard of something like this being used in black aircraft. after you reach "some mach" plasma forms on the fuselage and can be direct off the back of the aircraft for thrust. its reported to generate half the aircrafts thrust... and reach maybe mach 12 plus.
- jackmaninov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma#Temperatures
"...the electron temperature is typically several thousand degrees."
I don't think airplane fuselages can withstand several thousand degrees, nor would they get to that temperature at any kind of reasonable atmospheric speed. - cantino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, we need more active research into new propulsion! Cool!
- playbombcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though this is a step up from ion thrusters, hopefully we out-do ourselves and make even plasma propulsion obsolete (once they get it working). We can't afford to keep making all this slow crap.
What I'm looking forward to is some form of antigravity that doesn't oblige me to have 1 ton of fuel explode behind me to put me into orbit. No problem though, it's still worth the view. Chances are I'll end up finding myself coughing up the money to grab a seat Spaceship Two with Virgin Galactic. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote - Now we're going to go spweing plasma all over our earth? God I love that word. Makes me think of that will smith song every time I hear it
"Getting jiggy with it, na-na-naa-na-na-naa" - imagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad its not going to be used in nasa til the year....2040
- jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I like NASA's version better" - yeah, pitty they don't know how to operate space craft though isn't it? nasa is fake, the moon landings were fake, and now they actually have to send up real spacecraft, they can't, they blow up.
- loundsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lovin the truth jimthetaff
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"negetivigating"
+digg just for that word - ke5crz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NASA is real, Unfortunately so is congress which keeps easing back NASA'S funding while at the same time finding ways to slap a tax on just about anything they can, Then spend six grand on a toilet seat and wonder how they blew the budget.
- ICECommander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jackmaninov
I've touched plasmas contained in thin glass with a plasma that 'hot' inside, the electron temperature is not the macroscopic temperature (that's the ion temperature). - Vision77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a definite step forward. +digg
- x2dx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if I could get one of these in my car.

- Weezel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You do realize that if you put your hand up to these engines you'd feel the same about the same amount of force as a sheet of paper laying on your hand has. These engines are meant for huge long distance missions where they can accelerate for years. We won't see star wars engine technology for a very long time.
