- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I second that. Glass Nickle. MMMMMMMMMMM.....
And now I know that when I order from them, my pizza will be here in an environmentally friendly way :) - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How much does a gallon of cooking oil cost?Very smart pizza compines are going to start doing this.
- Spastastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used to live in madison and used to order from glassnicklepizza all the time.
This gets a digg from me simply because their fish and chips (yes a pizza place actually had fish and chips) Basket was kick ass.MMmm curly fries. - nthitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Who else thinks Madison needs a Diggnation show?
- GaurdianDevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Represent!!
Good Pizza, too. - cheshire76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5#1 party school in the country and environmentally friendly pizza delivery trucks. Now, if Vic Pierce wasn't the only place where you can buy beer after 9pm, Madison would be nearing perfection. Still love living here though.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Running a vehicle on public roads with untaxed fuel is illegal, unless there are specific laws exempting it.
Well, then the law is wrong. - locu543, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My landlord refines his own oil. He buys the oil for about .30 a gallon from the chinese places, and he's got the whole setup in his garage. He might have 200 dollars in some homebrew equipment, by the time he's got it to the point he can run it in his truck he might have .60-75 per gallon invested. The exhaust smells like french fries but he laughs all the way to the bank
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder what the exhaust smells like... i bet it's good for advertising
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very cool. Expecially with that stupid gas tax we have here. :
- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ok, so where's the story you posted for itr, and I'll digg it instead.
- darthrsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4embrace alternative fuels
- nOOBert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good freakin pizzia! We had one in Oshkosh, wi
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's things like this, rather than Bush's cowboy shtick, that truly make America a great country.
Don't rely on the crooks in the government or the oil companies to do it for you, do it yourself!
NOW! - Kamic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Glass Nickel Pizza Co makes awesome pizza & food, Next I hope they design a national pizza delivery system so I can get some in Green Bay, WI!
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My neighbor has converted his truck to run on vegetable oil. Every week he goes around to the Chinese and Japanese restaurants nearby and picks up their oil for free (otherwise they would have to pay to have a company remove it). He brings it home and runs it through a filtering system that he has, and uses it to power his truck almost all of the time (he needs to use gasoline when starting and stopping the car, but once it's going it runs on pure "asian oil").
I think it cost him about $5,000 - $10,000 to convert his truck (so he's probably not going to save money in the long run), but it's good to know that he's helping the environment, not using foreign oil, and making a statement all at the same time.
Edit - I believe it is a "grease car" (MattH posted a link in his comment a few above this one.) - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I live in Madison, Wisconsin....and beside it being awesome that they are using an alternate fuel, deep fryer oil, they also have the best pizza in the city!
**NOTE TO THE SUBMITTER OF THIS STORY**
You aren't by chance Jesse Zakshesky are you? If it is...your under a new alias that you didn't tell me about? The reason I think you are is the stories you submitted are of the same nature of the personality of my friend Jesse Zakshesky, along with your digg account name? Just curious if this is Jesse Zakshesky of Madison, Wisconsin or not?! - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wisconsin is the place for getting around gass prices
- nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Guess I should order from Glass Nickel from now on. My girlfriend lives a few blocks from the Campus Drive/Whitney Way location. What happened to the Oshkosh one? I'm in Oshkosh now for work, and I'm hungry!
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't see why this wasn't done years ago when it was found to be safe & efficient.
Any fast food place that delivers will basicly be producing their own fuel. The savings from not filling the cars & having to pay for waste removal would be very beneficial.
I should find a cheap-ass diesel car to get through this Summer. Plenty of places to get the oil for it around here. - NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ dotorg
do you have/know of a link explaining the "stupid gas tax" law? - syd4111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love my town! Additionally: Vic Pierce rules.
- Tachikama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3C'mon, Alex and Kevin could barely handle their drinks in Reno. Wisconsin drinkers will kill em. A show at the Great Dane Brewery would ***** rock though.
- pseudo.hero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, I love their pizza too.
- Hana13B, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mad-town people are a special kind of cool--that's really awesome and on a side note...Glass Nickel has THE BEST pizza I've ever had. A diggnation special episode on Mifflin for their street party would be perfect...someone should page Alex and Kevin on arranging that! That and a Halloween special on State Street!
- xN8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Any of you guys from Mad Town going to Mifflin? Lol, if so, see you there.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like cardiac arrest, myself.... everyone that doesn't live in the madison area can pretty much guess whats on it.
- bdgraaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll be there. Let's get drunk and then call Glass Nickel!
Better yet, how about impromptu Diggnation Madison live from Mifflin! C'mon guys, UW was rated #1 party school by both Princeton Review and Playboy this year. With that party scene combined with our great Computer Science program, it shouldn't take too much convincing to get your guys to at least consider it!
...maybe at Mifflin next year :) It's a little bit too short of notice. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's illegal? What kind of ***** is that.. :(
- acorn22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I live *near* mad-town.
But I was there all last weekend! not that i had pizza - floorman56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OK a couple of things ....a car that will run Bio Diesel is different than one that will run on SVO (straight vegetable oil) any diesel can run on Bio but only a converted diesel can use SVO. A SVO can still run off diesel. in fact when you use SVO you have to clear out the SVO out of the fuel lines before you turn the diesel off or you will gum up your fuel lines. so if you are driving less than 35 min a SVO diesel in not much use
- mwisconsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My brother is the general manager over at the Culver's on Cottage Grove Road. He's got at least 2 guys that come around each week to empty his fryer grease into their cars. He loves it, as it saves them a good amount of money for disposal.
And GN Pizza is definitely the best in town. Rocky Roccocco's is a close runner up, if you like Chicago-style. - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Asda (Walmart) in the UK have been doing this for a few years. They use oil from frying donuts to run their delivery trucks. There were a few news articles about it a while back.
- wando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2save some pizza and beer for me, I have to work til early afternoon
- CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know I love Glass Nickel Pizza (Fetalicious is an unmatched pizza experience), but I can't in good conscience hand them best pizza in Madison. For me, both Falbo's and Pavlov's are better. Those pepperoncini's at Pavlov's are probably my favorite pizza topping, ever. They're a little tangy and just the right hotness - somewhere between a banana pepper and a jalapeno.
And Rossi's on Monona Drive sells some killer thin-crust too. - namae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have one of these vegetable oil cars sitting outside right now. Fun project, too bad its scary driving a beat to hell rustbox VW. Problem right now is actually getting used oil for the car. Buying new vegetable oil for the car defeats the purpose of avoiding gas since its pretty pricey.
- addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25K is a little high for a conversion kit.
However even if so, the break even point (based on diesel being $3.00 a gallon), the truck getting (a high) 20mpg, and filtering cost is about 35,000 miles.
Most cars and trucks can be converted for less than $1000 and the filtering setup can be made for less than $100. Breaking even based on these numbers will only take 367 gallons of fuel (under 10,000 miles for most cars) and can usually be accomplished inside of a year.
Imagine being free of high fuel prices in 12 months. (the typical American will pay $2400 for automotive fuel this year). - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's called biodiesel and you can put it in any diesel engine without modification.
- whitlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't worry too much. They use beater cars around here which were on their last legs anyway. Now for other people trying it...
- znutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mifflin is going to rock
- CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the point is that there are plenty of restaurants who COULD fuel all their delivery vehicles on bio diesel, even given the current (lack of) infrastructure. Even if it ends up being more expensive (which it won't be to places like McDonald's etc who need to buy the oil anyway for their fryers), it still pollutes LESS. Less greenhouse gasses. Less pollution. Less foreign oil.
In fact, another Wisconsin company has converted food delivery trucks to bio-diesel. It's called Culvers. You can see that effort here: http://wistechnologynews.com/article.php?id=1861
And yes, it smells like french fries. But it's exhaust. It doesn't permeate the car, and if it does, you need a new exhaust.
I think it would be great to have more cars running on biodiesel. They could manufacture the vegetable oil for the cars specifically. You are aware the vegetables and their oils are a renewable resource, yes? This is not true for fossil fuels.
Imagine if the entire restaurant industry could convert their shipping trucks to use Bio-diesel in their shipping trucks. They could still burn regualar diesel, but when available, all vegetable oil could be cheaply and efficiently burned as fuel. It's one alternative fuel that most certainly DOES make economic sense. Especially since restaurants are now paying to dispose of it. - addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@DSPGeek WVO doesnt go to landfills, it is used to make many consumer products and pigfeed
- wando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm from madtown as well and....mmmmm....glass nickel is the *****
- 8bitclassics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't live in Madison, but usually at a conference or two there a year, and everytime, I pick up a Glass Nickel Special. Great Pizza! Was actually there last week and had one.
