- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah it's just atmospheric distortion not "part of the sun suddenly changing color."
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...so it's not really a phenomena. What's with the Nerd Alert? Has digg gone mainstream?
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that deserves a digg!
- blatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So it's just atmospheric distortion?
- suzyqzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have seen the green flash! I have lived in Hawaii years and have only seen it a couple of times. The sky usually needs to be clear and you have to watch the sunset over the ocean. It truly is only a "flash," as it only lasts a second, but it's pretty cool.
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool,never heard of this before. interesting
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The pictures really arn't that good, but the subject matter is.
- bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've heard of this but never seen any photos before. Some of those are very nice, especially the blue flash that was taken in Hawaii. I wouldn't have to patience to take these pics though. I'll just go bang some out in Photoshop. ;)
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's interesting, but I'm still not sure what I'm looking at... or rather, why it's occuring. Still, I'll dig it on general principle.
- LuckyJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've worked offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and lived near the ocean all my life, and I've only seen it twice; two nights in a row off of Catalina island's Pacific side. It's amazing these guys have captured this on film.
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0APOD had this a while ago. If you haven't checked it out before:

Cool site +digg - DiggedBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm sorry but i just can't digg such an ugly site... i tried to bear through and find an interesting picture but blech... i just can't.
- gconway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now for a "lit geek" comment - the premise of the "green flash" at sunset formed the core metaphor (and title) of a terrific John D. MacDonald "noir" thriller set in Florida in the early 1960s, called, appropriately enough, "A Flash of Green." In MacDonald's book, the "flash of green" referred not only to the green flash at sunset, but to the "flash of green" produced by, ahem, money, in the hands of greedy and unscrupulous Florida real estate developers. It's a great read, sexy and extremely cool, and it was turned into a pretty good movie sometime in the 90s, I think, starring Ed Harris. Grab the book (a Gold Medal Fawcett paperback) at a used book dealer on line, and rent the movie, if you can. Excellent stuff. (As are most of MacDonald's books; sadly, the only ones currently in print are his Travis McGee suspense novels. His non-series books, like "A Flash of Green," are in my opinion much better.) End free plug.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it's just atmospheric distortion, wouldn't that make those illusory, not real?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You are on a tech news site.... I think 'nerd alert' goes w/o saying
- ebenthurston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0nerd alert!!!
