- DinosWillDie13, on 10/10/2007, -5/+64The two triangular pieces have slightly diffent angles. In the second shape the missing piece is accounted for in a slight bulge in the top half of the triangle. If you check the side length on the two triangles you can see the difference. Digg for being very confusing though!!
- whatthefu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Digg is turning into ebaumsworld.
- Scienceisfun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26He's right -- the slopes of the two triangles are different. 3/8 for the red one, and 2/5 for the blue-green one. This means the top figure isn't really a triangle at all, but actually a quadrilateral. This means that you can't describe its area using the 1/2 base x height rule. Likewise for the outline (not counting the gap) of the lower figure. The outline is also quadrilateral, not triangular, and a different quadrilateral than the top figure, with a one unit increase in area.. You can also think about this using calculus by describing the "hypoteneuse" of the quadrilaterals as a two-part piecewise linear function, and integrating. You'll find the lower one gives a larger area.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23It's because you assume the overall shape is a triangle when it's not. Look how it bulges out verse sinks in slightly at the point the two triangles touch. You can see they're not the same by comparing slope. 3/8 != 2/5.
- nepawoods, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I saw this one before there was an internet.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20Old.
- arghargh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13This was not just dugg to the frontpage.. no.. oh jesus christ it was...
- orangester, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13People, people, it's simple Tetris physics.
- trenchfever, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The dinosaurs called. They want their triangles back.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7thanks old police
- Dmaulchris, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12I do not understand your explanation, but I will accept it.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6my cat's breath smells like cat food
- joach, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Very well done, had me feel very worthless and stupid for a few seconds.
- charlesray, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Buried for being the oldest image in the history of the internet.
- Metropolis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Older than the internet. Literally.
- rstarr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+542
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Thanks thank police.
- SuperDaveOz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I bent my wookie.
- evildemonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Look at the difference in ratio of their sides.
- nepawoods, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The hypotenuse of the entire " triangle" (the 4 colored shapes combined) is not a straight line. In the upper image it bulges inward, in the lower image it bulges outward. That's what people mean when they say there's a bulge. It's there. It's visible.
- PitbullRaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wait... What did you just call me?
- znutz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Have you ever played Tetris?
- ohsin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3exactly :).i just copied this image into mspaint and verified that there is slight bulge in one figure.
- king3vbo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3old picture is old
- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't get it.
- melonhedd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There are no triangles in Tetris.
- OneLess, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is it fun calling people "kiddos" on the Internet when you're only 21 years old?
- honeymustardn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They're two different triangles.....
- hockyfight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nice sarcasm there buddy, obviously your dad was able to do it to you so whats the prob?
- MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You cant spell tetris without tri.
- Scynet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Small triangle = 2/5 = 0.4
Larger triangle = 3/8 = 0.375
The hypotenuse (longest line on top) isn't straight at all. There's a bugle that makes up for the amount of the missing square. The result just looks like a triangle, but it isn't, as already mentioned. - ixalarx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh god, not this ***** again.
- LoudMusic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Several people have commented that "the triangle has a bulge". This is in fact incorrect. It is not a triangle at all - it is a quadrilateral of varying angles.
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You don't seem to understand that the green triangle's slope is steeper than the red triangle's. It is slightly steeper, in which with the grid in the backgrounds causes us to see it as the same when lined up, unless examined strongely
- DesignerScott, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Buried for being old!
Buried for being unimportant!
Buried for using a false premise!
Buried for grammar poor is that! - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1..and it reminded me of another old "missing item" riddle.
Three businessmen check into a hotel for the night. They ask for one room, which is $30. They each give the clerk $10. A while later, the clerk realizes the room is actually only $25 and instructs the bellhop to bring the $5 change up to the men. On the way up, the underpaid bellhop realizes that the men can't split the money evenly, so he might as well give them $3 and keep the $2 for himself as a tip. He gives them their $3, or $1 per person.
Now the men have each paid $9, for a total of $27. The bellhop has $2, making the total $29. What happened to the extra dollar? - m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Correction: Tetris®
We don't want a lawsuit on our hands here. - Dolomite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is true for the same reason as it's always been. The blue and red triangles have different slopes. slope = rise over run. do the math. no magic here.
- nicolazaro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Length as well. This is like a middle school math problem. buried.
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Digg is turning into digg.
we need to stop this madness, Digg should not turn into digg, as digg has pictures and videos riddling the front page and the comments of the users are lower class slashdot copies. The linking is just random reddit while any blogspam is what we would expect of netscape. Digg should be it's own digg, free of all these comparisons.
Solution: Destroy all competition with violence, or time machine. - Lorddias, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This picture is amazing.
- nebion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0There's also a slight dip in the first triangle.
I remember seeing this almost 10 years ago...it's kind of clever, although obvious once you look at the lengths of the sides of the red and green triangles. - irieiam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is a good visual for defragmentation. The 1st image shows fragmentation along the slope. The small, uncolored pieces of the blocks will align fill a single block's space in the 2nd image = defragmentation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defragmentation
- raynar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1MY SWEET DICK ITS MAGIC!
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This totally disproves God. Yet it proves God must exist, because where is the hole? That hole is God, as are the pieces. And the internet. Which proves that God is a fake, because you can't believe your eyes!
- StefRush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0RU kidding me this is easy one hint (think Tetris)
- kungfustewie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Frick, the height of the triangle on bottom is greater that the triagnle on top, count it, due to the change in slope the extra square unit makes on full square.
- thomasoa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1 If you look at the two vectors (5,2) and (8,3), the parallelogram formed with (0,0) and their sum (5+8,2+3) = (13,5) is a tiny sliver of a parallelogram, and its area is | 5*3 - 2*8| = 1. That is the shape that is added to the figure on the top to get the bottom figure, so the added area is exactly one, and that corresponds to the one block below.
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You're all idiots. Digg is turning into the interwebs.
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Check your math, kiddos. The turquoise (blue-green) block is 5x2, and the slope is 2.5. The red block is 8x3, and the slope is 2.67 (rounded).
