- ACityInOhio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well a golf swing is all well and good, but why can't science explain why Tiger has such a hot wife? I know we're all supposed to think it's because of his money and winning smile...but really, there's got to be more to it, right? Science, can you figure this one out, please?
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One more thing, it's not as if you can just "***** your wrists more" and get more effortless power. The key is releasing your wrists at the right moment and using your body to store the energy in the club. If you release too early (aka casting) you lose power and introduce all sorts of swing problems. If you release too late you don't get the club square to the ball so you'll push it off to the right and you will have hit the ball before the clubhead reached fullspeed. It's all in the timing.
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ahh, I bet you tried golf once, really sucked at it, and couldn't handle failing at something that seemed so easy.

- ulyssesyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the key to a great golf swing is years of practice.

Amazing video of Tiger Woods in slow motion:

- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yet another physorg arcticle lacking content. Guess they didn't want to pay $19 for a paper that is kinematics 101 either.
- AndrewJC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No, but golf is a great GAME regardless of whether you call it a sport.
I thought golf was incredibly boring before I started playing it. Now, I understand more than ever that yes, it is completely boring to watch. But golf is the ULTIMATE in Zen experience for the person playing.
Let's look at it here: You've got something that is inherently difficult to do (a golf swing), and it is your job to perform it perfectly for as many times as it takes to go through 18 holes. Ideally, this will be fewer than 72 times per game.
But hey, if you screw up? There's nobody to blame but yourself. And it's really up to you and nobody else to get in the right mindset. You have to exercise positive visualization in order to see yourself going through the perfect swing, and then you have to force your body to become relaxed enough to accomplish the swing while still remaining tense enough to not lose control. Like I said before, it's an incredible zen experience.
And any golf player who has hit that perfect swing even just once will know exactly what I mean when I say that it's a feeling of incredible calm and peace when you hit it just right. You KNOW, even before you make contact with the ball, that it's going to go exactly as far and as straight as you want it to. - jocnnor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Simple. According to video #1, all I have to do is grip with my left forefinger over my right ring finger with a V pointing at my left shoulder while the right hand lightly helping the left, all while I keep the ball near my right foot, and left foot slightly open, while applying equal pressure on my left and right balls of the feet. I lean slightly forward with knees slightly bent. Before swinging, keep my left arm fully extended and my right arm slightly bent. Rotate my shoulders keeping my weight right in the center, while my right elbow bends, keeping my left arm straight.
Oh...and waggle. It's important.
What an easy game.
/sarcasm - uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was pretty interesting but it also was kinda lacking. I'd love to hear more about that subject and maybe even see some better graphics/illustrations.
- madmordigan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No no no, that's for putting ;)
- jrking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Golfer are just fat lazy pathetic human beings..."
Excellent point. Take Tiger Woods for instance. He's a perfect example of someone who is fat, lazy, pathetic, has two left feet... - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2plaid pants.

- bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whoops
- LanceUppercut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this was already known in the golf community. Golf is a sport of contact where center contact on the face of the club all things being equal equates to the greatest distance. In my findings swinging "hard" only netted a gain of say 3-5 mph with the sacrifice of contact. That being said tiger has an amazing X-factor with a late release of his wrist which is exactly what I assume this article states. I am 5'10" with a swingspeed with a driver of 115mph which is no where near tiger territory but i have optimized my swing since the age of 16 to be able to control the late release and speed. I am longer than 99% of the people I play with.
It is a shame that this guy didn't spend 10 minutes on golfmagazine.com archives before devoting his time to something that has already been proven. - triscuitbiscuit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is amazing considering its timing.
We are doing double pendulums in biomechanics and solving for their equations of motion. I know- they are so fun to do :) Summing up all the moments and doing the torques and inertias- YAY! - one2gamble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It takes about as much effort and skill to play baseball as it does golf.....
- tedferguson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about shoulder turn?
- Alvaxyz, on 05/05/2009, -0/+0And to think I was under the impression that it was all in the hips.. Damn you Chubbs!!
- bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have to agree with altjeringa. And before you digg me down, yes I have played golf and I was actually pretty good at it. However, I hated it. It is incredibly boring and a complete waste of time. Every time I see somebody practice their swing with an imaginary club I want to take that imaginary club and beat their imaginary brain in with it.
And no, golf does not take as much skill as basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer or football. It is more like playing pool. And pool is more of a sport than golf will ever be. Hell, Golden Tee is more of a sport than actual golf. - eric0213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sure, walking five miles with a bag on your back and hitting an object twice the distance of a football field is nothing. I'm sure my four-year-old niece could do it.
According to this site, http://k2.kirtland.cc.mi.us/~balbachl/calorie.htm, I burn more calories in a round of golf than an NBA player does in an entire game. - bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 "Sure, walking five miles with a bag on your back and hitting an object twice the distance of a football field is nothing."
You just described the exact reason why golf is retarded. Thank-you. - PAmit, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0This is a new blog that might help you:
http://my-golf-tournament-gifts.com/golf-swing_tra ... - msack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think I learned this in high school physics.
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2ah bummer I was hoping it'd be a video of somebody beating a golfer over the head with a club.
Golf is not a sport unless you are so old and fat that getting up and walking to the refrigerator raises you heart rate to anaerobic levels. Golfer are just fat lazy pathetic human beings with to much money and time.
