- flossdaily, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16Writing an article about cutting edge physics that a layperson could understand would change communication forever.
- flossdaily, on 07/15/2009, -6/+21Dear Science,
First give us flying cars and a cure for baldness, THEN work on the crazy *****.
Sincerely, Everybody - powers27, on 07/15/2009, -1/+14***** that I'm not bald
- flossdaily, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9...yet.
- gilgamesh23, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9Oow!! that article made my head hurt!
- funkedup, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5We've been doing this for a while. Teleportation of photons (light) have already been realized. It's still a remarkable discovery though, but we have to remember it's at a quantum level. It's going to be great to see what the future has in store for us!

2004. - anthropodeus, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5could somebody with a good understanding of electromagnetics please explain to me what happens when light is "squeezed"? the article doesn't actually say, yet it seems vital to understanding what's going on.
- IAMRaven, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5My opinion on quantum entanglement is that from a 'higher dimensional perspective' (that is to say, a 10 dimensional creature viewing it), the particles that are 'separated in space' (entangled) are actually one singularity when viewed from different 'angles' in the higher dimensional reality.
So we have not 'recreated' the object in separate places (or transmitted it), but we have simply uncovered another way to 'look at' (interact with) the same object in our 4DIM (space+time) world in a different 'solution' of X,Y,Z. So nothing has 'traveled' and has not therefore violated relativity. People who say this violates the speed of light are wrong.
The famous Youngs Slit Experiment is the same effect that acts cumulatively and without spatial separation. The Slit Experiment exhibits this same teleportation phenomena but is 'teleporting' in a multidimensional direction that has time as the largest vector component of it, instead of space. That is to say, the Slit experiment was when man first realized the same particle can 'be viewed' in different 'locations in spacetime' at the same 'time'. Where the term 'be viewed' is synonomous with 'be proven to exist' in this context. - hmmdar, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I want a bigger willy before they cure baldness, i can always shave my head, but a pump only goes so far....
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -1/+5This could lead to a breakthrough that could change communication forever.
- DirtyVicar, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4What, no sensationalized Digg headline about teleporters? How about "Scientists Begin Preliminary Design Work on Teleportation Machine".
- Amadeus2490, on 07/15/2009, -3/+7Pew pew!
- pagno, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3***** you, I am!
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -0/+3lol...It's a good thing the layperson isn't needed to make the doohickey work. These scientist talk their own kinda nonsense. I tell ya, it'll be those ***** who inherit the Earth.
- MrBenC, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3so you are saying when i take a shower someone a billion lightyears away could be watching me scrub my ass IN REAL TIME with no delay? just because they simply found another way to watch me?
- DirtyVicar, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2***** spammers are like goddamn cockroaches.
- powers27, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I feel stupid for trying to go there..
- MrBenC, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2we need to revise our method for searching for aliens since they are using methods like these for their own networks and not radio!
- i1011i, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Flying cars exist, and a few major cities have digital highways already programmed. And, there is some leading edge programs for baldness out there. I think they have some spare time for working on the quantum computer that will significantly aid in making flying cars and baldness cures even more of a reality.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2This is cool, but it's still using the "copy and paste" idea, which is ***** terrifying. "The Fly" is a minor concern. "The Prestige" is a horrific concept which will probably become a reality for a handful (or a few thousand) test subjects before anything useful will come of this. Matter replication would be a great place to start instead of full on "teleportation", which is not actually possible in the way we understand.
- AndrewSnook, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Don't worry, You're not alone.
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Dugg for "antibunched". There is hope for my boxer shorts yet!
- snipeit, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=w ...
this article helped me understand it. - CTK14A, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2It lets out a little giggle.
- bazzarr, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Where do you think light juice comes from silly?
- slicksabo, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1this made me laugh really hard, thank you
- Moralogic, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Well what if you can, but you may no longer be you? The you that is teleported having the same memories and everything, but actually be a totally different person.
- Rain12913, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2You're right, Kitten Cannon IS much cooler than quantum teleportation!
- flossdaily, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1No. But you can be third in line.
- doom777, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1if it's same memories and personality, it's the same me.
- IAMRaven, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Yes, MrBenC. Check Wikipedia on "quantum entanglement". Particles 'affect' each other 'instantly' with no lightspeed delay in this phenomena. My theory is that, from a higher dimensional perspective, these 'entangled particles' are actually the SAME particle in the SAME place.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1i thought you said sarah palins minge transporter
- smihalik, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1someone publish this man
- lazyrussian, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1That'll be a while. If they can do this with light, then it shouldn't be to hard to figure out how to do this with Hadronic matter, since hadrons are held together through photo-interactions, e.g. exchange of photons/light between matter-particles.
- lazyrussian, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1This is the original method proposed - what Einstein called Spooky Action at a Distance, better known as Quantum Entanglement. In a nutshell, imagine you have two electrons pointing up (initially). Let's say they're spread 100 lightyears apart. If electron one were to suddenly flip down, electron 2 would simultaneously (e.g. in the same instant) also flip down. This seems impossible since the information that the first electron changed state would take 100 lightyears to reach electron 2, but with quantum entanglement, this isn't the case - that's the 2004 article.
The current article wants to dot he following: They have a a stream of photons, let's say 5, that are equidistant from each other. Now if they were able to discern one photon from another (based on varying photon-energies), they will have proven their theory - how I don't know, still need to wrap my head around this.
In general, their goal is to take a quantum field (e.g. matter - called a quantum field because it's made of quantized particles, like electrons, protons, neutrons) and shift it from one place to another in the same state. Meaning, if I was doing the moonwalk at I was teleported from my current location, to lets say Moscow, I would continue doing my moon walk as if nothing had happened - I would be teleported int he position/state I was in.
I hope this explanation was ok. I'm a physics grad student, and I have yet to really delve into quantum field theory myself, so if someone knows this better than I do, please feel free to add. - Alceste1978, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1.....that was awesome.
- Gareth321, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Succinct and beautifully presented. I award you with the tl;dr award for today.
- swicken, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1That'll be a long ass sleep.
- Moralogic, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1How about this instead:
1. Automated driving cars. (result in fewer cops required and less taxes then)
2. Fiber optic or faster internet for everyone.
3. Figure out a way to force people off of IE or IE to become standards compliant.
4. Make flying cars.
5. Create genetic modification by pill. (Cure baldness, obesity, failing memory, allergies, and much much more.)
6. Do a bunch of space stuff (colonize the Moon, Mars, and build the space elevator.)
7. Create crazy laser teleporting. - matude, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1http://xkcd.com/525/
- matude, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Flying cars won't come before we have made all highways automatic for ground cars. Driving should be controlled by computers, at least on all the major roads and cities. New GPS systems will be accurate to about couple of millimeters, it's more than enough to put cars driving by themselves on maps we've given them. Only cities with skyscrapers and tunnels will become a small problem, but I'm sure we can think of something.
Nobody will trust bunch of teens texting, putting on make-up and chating to go 250+ km/h over all the houses. - MrBenC, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1flying cars have been with us for a long time. try petitioning your government to let you fly the damn thing in your neighborhood. then try affording the price of one.
- Low1977, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2SPAH'S SAPPIN MAH TELEPORTER
- doom777, on 07/15/2009, -4/+4wake me up when you can teleport people.
- Xaevier, on 07/15/2009, -5/+4Oh ***** it's "The Fly" all over again!
- triassic911, on 07/15/2009, -3/+1Star Wars!
- azurite, on 07/15/2009, -3/+1Wow! Imagine the implications! Spam emails about penis enlargement could get to your inbox faster than the speed of light!
:-D - skit4king, on 07/15/2009, -6/+2Great news for all you PC gamers out there! ...I ignore you consoles!
