- tehknotte, on 01/15/2008, -3/+11LOL
- tdp05, on 01/15/2008, -2/+50dugg for the photo of the transatlantic cables. I had always superficially wondered where they came in, and this answered it.
- Zera, on 01/15/2008, -5/+1They come in many places as there are dozens if not hundreds by now, since the first one was installed in 1988.
- disillusioned, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8I'd kinda be more interested in seeing the routers that receive and split out those cable signals.
- rollem, on 01/15/2008, -2/+16The body decomposition field study was amazing. I would've assumed that they used pig carcasses. I assume that they get people who donate their bodies to science, but I wonder if they use unclaimed corpses, as well.
- da_bradler, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10I doubt they use unclaimed corpses, I'm pretty sure people would throw a major fit about that. But ya if I donated my body to science I'd rather end up there then a test subject of some noob doctor for male breast implants or something.
- jakeburner, on 01/15/2008, -6/+3They use whatever Burger King doesn't use. It's more cost effective that way.
- MelroseMan, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1i go to UT in knoxville and every seems to know about it.

- weaselfingers, on 01/15/2008, -4/+10Even better the second time!
- Rhettsta, on 01/15/2008, -2/+16old allready in one day? new record
- dreicher, on 01/15/2008, -2/+17It's been a long day, but wasn't this here earlier?
- JanYpe, on 01/15/2008, -1/+7Yes it was. But it only got 1400 diggs, so I doubt people saw it.
- breakspirit, on 01/15/2008, -11/+9These photos would have been far better if they'd be realistic views of the subjects instead of lame staged/manipulated photos. Clearly she was trying to be artsy, but I think that the subject matter is the attention grabber to promote here, and all she did was obfuscate them.
- 1iProd, on 01/15/2008, -7/+5Dunno, I personally liked how she moved the corpse to give the photo more of an "edge." And how she moved the radioactive containers to get the right feel for the moment, and most of all where she stuck those telecommunication cables, genius. Also *****.
- breakspirit, on 01/15/2008, -2/+1I get your joke, and I did like the cables picture, but the rest looked so...unnatural and uninventive. I dunno, I guess I'm not artsy enough to be into this work.
- breakspirit, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3I don't mean to double post, but I thought I'd paste soomprimal's comment from the other comment thread about these pictures.
"Kind of interesting, but I was a little annoyed by the photographer's comments such as "I spent hours arranging the fruit to look like a still life"... why would they do that? Part of the mystique is capturing these places as they normally look."
My thoughts exactly. How come he got 36 diggs? Heh

- sykotik, on 01/15/2008, -4/+6The picture of the radioactive waste was the best by far.
Surreal. - karltonDance, on 01/15/2008, -5/+19Do diggers really have such a short memory?

I don't normally care about duplicates, but damn, digg...- j4200, on 01/15/2008, -2/+8Different diggers come on different schedules. Most people only spend a small portion of their time on digg. Repeats aren't a bad thing because usually the first pass was only for one crowd. You aren't all important. The digg community voted it up AGAIN, so it's popular, AGAIN.
- iaresean, on 01/15/2008, -1/+0Remember the world works in different time zones.
10 hours difference seems fair.
If it was an hour difference then maybe complain. - ChromaVita, on 01/15/2008, -1/+1Sweet link! I should submit it to digg!
- AttilaD, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1When you click the digg link at the bottom of the article, it brings you to this one. So STFU.
- jmpeagle, on 01/15/2008, -6/+6made popular 11 hours ago and from the exact same website
http://digg.com/arts_culture/Photographs_Of_Americ ... - Evocati, on 01/15/2008, -4/+3Wow! In some way watching the Sarah Conner Chronicles has sent me back in time!

- smokestack, on 01/15/2008, -1/+0made me think (carlos mencia retard voice) "why are they always laughin at me?"
- JimSwarthow, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1y'know I nearly got a little emotional when I saw the pic of the tiger. it was really heart breaking to look at. and then I read your post.. man your comment is really phkd up but, so far it's the best laugh of my day!
/goin' to hell right behind you
- stickman0287, on 01/15/2008, -3/+0heres an idea
how bout we recycle the radioactive waste as house lamps - bingobongony, on 01/15/2008, -3/+2Then they are not secrets.
- heystoopid, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2Oh don't you mean the US Air Forces ultimate hidden in plain sight doomsday weapon designed to match the Russian Equivalent during the cold war !
- stelriah, on 01/15/2008, -5/+3The topics/subjects are great but the photos are mediocre.
- Chrissilvanet, on 01/15/2008, -3/+2I hate it when people have an opinion on everything, this photographer supplements her work like she is trying to sell you on its ideas.
- kjcdude, on 01/15/2008, -2/+1"Kenny suffers from mental retardation, as well as walking and breathing problems."
http://www.wired.com/culture/art/multimedia/2008/0 ... - skiierb0y, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1very cool collection of photos!
- shadowmoose, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3Wait a second. Wasn't this already on the front page earlier today?
- AZRoboto, on 01/15/2008, -3/+3Buried for Duplicate story.
Why do people create new stories when there's already one there?- Grimdotdotdot, on 01/15/2008, -1/+1Same reason they duplicate comments, maybe?
- shiftclick, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4"Next up, Taryn Simon presents America's best 7-11 toilets"
- spurgear, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0There was an interview of her by Charlie Rose. It is only a segment of the whole show though. They talked about the process and experience of some listed pictures.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-429826484 ... - ahuxley, on 01/15/2008, -3/+2Just so boring.
cryptome.org/, Wired and Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have much more fun images.
Over hyped, dumbed down, corporatized up junk. - echelvan, on 01/15/2008, -2/+0I had read about the "Forensic Anthropology Research Facility" - Image 3, but this is the first time I'm seeing someone come out with an image. Kudos to the photographer.

- dawtcalm, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1grosser pics here:
- greeninoregon, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2I'd like to see if I could find the book in barnes and noble or somewhere, just so I could sit and look at it all, and not pay for it :)
- RSchwarzer, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0great article
- Zoltair, on 01/15/2008, -2/+2Lame. most images could of been taking by anybody anywhere, just artsy attempts at some random topic. Buried again!!
- effedup, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I was expecting better pics. What is so secretive about this?
- Mektoub, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2I feel disappointed too, the choice of the subjects sucks and the photos are lame. I was expecting, I don't know Guantanamo, Area 51 or such :/
- zantos420, on 01/15/2008, -1/+1why is it the picture that includes bush isn't showing. these pictures are lame anyways - buried.
- troycott, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1It hard to judge these pictures when you don't know the details behind them -- which I'm sure are explained in the book. Art isn't the result -- it's the process. The result is just the documentation of the process.
- crapster4567, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0yawn
- alceria, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Damn, I grew up in the same down as a cryonics lab and had no idea.
- RalphSteadman, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0From the biography found on http://www.tarynsimon.com:
"Simon assumes the dual role of shrewd informant and collector of curiosities . . . Transforming the unknown into a seductive and intelligible form, Simon confronts the divide between those with and without the privilege of access."
In other words, if something doesn't convey the desired message, Tayrn will "rearrange" and "transform" the image until it resonates with her target audience.
In much the same manner as Leni Riefenstahl. - Error601, on 01/15/2008, -1/+1Nothing secret in there. Not very interesting shots either.
- saleggo, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1I guess I didn't find it too ironic that the incest-bred, retarded white tiger was from the South.
- BrianJJohnson, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1this is one of the best posts ive seen in a while.
