Party Animal? Don't Blame Your Genes
abc.net.au — Genetics account for roughly 51% of a person's height, weight and body shape, 25% of cardiovascular function and about 40% of certain blood characteristics, such as sugar and cholesterol levels. But genes only account for about 19% of many documented personality traits, such as neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness.

- paintist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Uh, and 2% of of our genes separate us from primates. So yeah, I think I'll continue to blame my "party animalness" on my genes.

- mario8bit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8How is this spam? It may not be backed by a very in depth study but then again, what is?

- Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Check who dugg the story. The same cult-like group responsible for getting the majority of stories on the front page. aaaz, hemphill, digitalgopher, this guy, and a bunch of others who automatically digg each other to get to the front.

- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Genetics are one factor, but how you've been raised is another. For instance, when I was growing up, my mother was always insistant on locking the doors whenever you're in a car. Inanely so. Because of that, to this day, it's a habit of locking the doors whenever I get into a car.
That said, it is a weakness to be unable to control your behavior. If locking the car doors was getting in the way of school, like partying does, I'd have no problem breaking the habit. I'd probably forget every now and then, but willpower isn't difficult to muster. - alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2P9, what happend to your icon, and what's with the new X-P9 moniker?
- teddyrux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone explain to me how genes don't make up 100% of someones height? I highly doubt there are "random factors" (except perhaps caffeine and other growth stunting products) that would make us shorter or taller.

- DM01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is BECAUSE of those factors that it isn't 100%. (and nutrition, as stated above). ;]
- amalthea23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Childhood illnesses also affect height.
- bronstad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heritabilities are often not interpreted correctly. they do not tell us that genes make up X% of a particular person's height, for instance.
it is that X% of variation in height, across a population, is accounted for by variation in genes within the population.
the heritability coefficient is correctly interpreted as the amount of change in a population that can be induced by a selective force. it is straigtforwardly interpreted if one wishes to do selective breeding, on for instance, corn. it does not tell us anything about development.
- turbowombat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I'm sure this will be seen as nitpicking, but when you're citing a single, unverified, scentific study you should put that in the lede. How hard would it have been to put "A recent study suggests that..." before the rest of your text? By not including that, you're sensationalizing the results...
- galored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This study is bull. Blame it all on genetics.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, this is from ABC.
I'm surprised that they didn't relate terrorism to genetics.
Maybe Fox news beat them to it :0
