- tinkafoo, on 04/09/2009, -3/+229TED. YES.
- muzzy, on 04/08/2009, -3/+179Really incredible stuff. When you think of the implications, it really blows you away.
- contemplator, on 04/09/2009, -1/+130I wish every teacher was as passionate and excited as she is about what they teach. We would be a lot further ahead today.
- NiftyG, on 04/09/2009, -0/+106So, the typical human contains 1 trillion human cells and 10 trillion bacterial cells.
Makes you think twice about the efficacy of antibacterial soap. - PedleZelnip, on 04/09/2009, -0/+78As someone who's taught at the post-secondary level I wish every student was as excited to learn as she is to teach.
- Ockniel, on 04/09/2009, -1/+79If that woman was science, I'd study her.
- stankhornia, on 04/09/2009, -2/+63Bacteria peer to peer share? Wait until the RIAA hear about this!!!!
- Paulorific, on 04/09/2009, -5/+63If science were a woman, I'd do her.
- LightPhoenix, on 04/09/2009, -1/+56Wow, I would have liked to have been at this talk. Our lab is working on some quorum sensing work, and it's fascinating stuff.
However, if you want the real inside scoop, there's a lab at Binghamton University (same Bingo that the killings happened at) that has discovered a pretty amazing link between biofilm dispersion events and quorum sensing. If you have access to PubMed journals, be sure to look for the names Davies and Sauer. They're sure to have a paper in Nature or Science soon discussing how a modified QS signal can cause biofilms to switch to dispersion mode, basically making them into planktonic cells susceptible to antibiotics. Big stuff. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+51Am I the only one who feels like I'm getting an free Ivy league level education every time I watch a TED video?
***** love that website - duvel, on 04/09/2009, -0/+47smart chicks = hott
- sonicpentatonic, on 04/09/2009, -2/+47I bet bacteria think our talking is pretty complex too
- psixaos, on 04/09/2009, -1/+45One of the best TED talks! It was all fascinating... But I'm still in awe with the 'shadowless squid' after it finished....I mean Shadowless SQUID FTW!!
- Cashmoney504, on 04/09/2009, -4/+38If you use iTunes, its a good idea to subscribe to the TED podcast, all the videos are very interesting.
- LongShlong, on 04/09/2009, -7/+40What would have blown me away is if Dr. House walked in and made fun of her...
- flaminglips, on 04/09/2009, -3/+32Since I'm a bio major, I would agree.
I don't think most people are science majors though. - kelstock, on 04/09/2009, -1/+30Using that stuff just makes them angry.
/wonders if the bacteriamind is in control when we're asleep - Palfo, on 04/09/2009, -2/+30Killer skirt.
- swordedge, on 04/09/2009, -4/+32I have known about that research for a little while. Implication is that if they can break that communication between bacteria, they might be able to cure some more diseases. In part because they would not spread the way they are supposed to.
- rchargel, on 04/09/2009, -0/+26It's actually much worse than that. You kill off most of the bacteria, and leave only the resistant bacteria to replicate. You are effectively making them stronger each time you use that crap.
- iNunchuk, on 04/09/2009, -1/+24you kill off the good bacteria leaving a spotless space for bad bacteria to replicate. That's antibacterial soap.
- Lelio, on 04/09/2009, -0/+23I've met her in person a few times when I've visited Princeton. Shes an amazing speaker even one on one. No matter what shes talking about she brings that exact same excitement to it. All of her students think the world of her. If there was anyone who could get american kids to start liking science, its Bonnie Bassler.
- akaz, on 04/09/2009, -0/+23But you can just disable a certain intra-species language...
- LongShlong, on 04/09/2009, -1/+23Stop that.
- krayneeum, on 04/09/2009, -1/+22They only get 20 minutes, so they have a lot of information to cram into that amount of time.
- enjinere, on 04/09/2009, -0/+21If you're really quiet, you can hear them.
- hawkspur, on 04/09/2009, -3/+23Bricks were shat.
- RishiBoy, on 04/09/2009, -0/+20An intellectually stimulating presentation
- lava, on 04/09/2009, -15/+34I for one welcome our new Descolada overlords.
- Hefelumpman, on 04/09/2009, -1/+20You must be intimidated by intelligent women.
I wish you good luck in your future love life - you will need it. - beasty_dave_Mk2, on 04/09/2009, -5/+23how do people talk like that? I can't even string together a sentence half as long, a fraction as articulate as her.
- iNunchuk, on 04/09/2009, -1/+19I dugg you up because you spoke the truth.
- christoast, on 04/09/2009, -1/+19Either you're a bad comedian or you should just get the ***** out. Out of everywhere.
- FlyinRyan89, on 04/09/2009, -0/+18The talks on TED always blow me away...
- BrutePhysics, on 04/09/2009, -0/+16I've been known to get like that when I try to explain new research to people. It's just one of those "THIS IS SO AWESOME I CAN'T STOP!" kind of reactions... you start talking about it, and then you go...and you go... and you go... and then your friend smacks you on the head because he's not a science guy and he's tired of listening to your rant. :)
- cal3366, on 04/09/2009, -0/+16I met Bassler at this years wintergreen conference in VA. She was amazing. I work in a Pseudomonas lab working on quorum sensing with Eb Pesci. I was so glad he got her to the conference to give a talk, she truly is an inspiration not only to science but women in science.
- Ockniel, on 04/09/2009, -1/+17She was great, very interesting to listen to (and she has a pleasant voice too).
- contemplator, on 04/09/2009, -1/+16Ahhh. Now I get it. I'm glad you cleared that up for everyone. If somebody made it this far I hope they would have a grasp on the content by now.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -3/+18How is Descolada formed?
How bacteria get pregnant? - akaz, on 04/09/2009, -16/+31Not one of the best science talks I'll ever hear.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+15FACT: American Idol is the most watched TV show.
- Ockniel, on 04/09/2009, -0/+13Her enunciation was very pronounced so that we could understand her at the fast rate she was talking.
- ckannabis, on 04/09/2009, -1/+14I agree. The talk was amazing. Kinda good looking for her age, too.
- christoast, on 04/09/2009, -0/+13Exactly, our poor grandparents didn't have access to this kind of information. Humans will soon be unstoppable. In the time of my grandparents they didn't even know there were other galaxies. Thank you internet.
Anyone know of any similar websites besides fora.tv? - neveroffline, on 04/09/2009, -0/+12yup...the wanted off switch...and actually she covered that
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcg ...
Davies and Sauer talk about the reproduction into planktonic cells. Both are valid methods, A. shutting the cell off (dormant state and non harmful), and B. letting it reproduce into a non lethal cell. I think we've only tipped the iceberg a bit.
Great info. Great people. Thanks. - Clark1984, on 04/09/2009, -4/+15midochlorians.
- iNunchuk, on 04/09/2009, -2/+13The best science talk I'll hear is when they tell us the exact mechanism they used to stop Cancer in its tracks.
- NSResponder, on 04/09/2009, -3/+14Interesting science. I guess this kind of cooperation between individual bacteria is the precursor to the hormonal activity in multicellular organisms.
-jcr - ahawks, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11Dugg for Ender reference
