One Word: Bioplastics
greentomarrow.com — It’s been 40 years since Mr. McGuire pulled Benjamin Braddock withdrawal apart from his degree and said: “I just want to say one word to you. … Just one word are you listening? Plastics …. There is a great future in plastics. ” The future is still in plastics, but today Mr. McGuire probably whisper, “bioplastics”.

- noseeme, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8I have one German word for you: Hoechsgeschwindigkeitsbegrenzung
- Sornos, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8Apparently it means "high speed limiting". So says Babel Fish anyways.
- ElbertF, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3What does Babel Fish have to say about "eenmansbenzinemotorkettingzaagmachine" (Dutch)?
- Devilboy666, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2I got 'Single-man benzine-motor chainsaw engine'

That's not one word :[
Also, BioPlastic, does this mean that I can eat them or what?- oriondr, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4It means we have yet another product we can create to divert food from the masses of starving people in the world.
- Shadowgamers, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4It's only a matter of time before rice gives up it secrets
- atchon, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Eating meat does the exact same thing, the amount of hay and water necessary to raise cattle is amazing compared to how much you get out of it. If we grew more grains and ate less meat we would also increase our food production, and be able to sell more to other countries. There will always be trade offs.

please do some research on this for me, and come back and comment again.

Is that sentence poorly constructed, or am I missing something?- green1152, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1It was hard to read, because many of the sentences were poorly constructed. Good read, though.
- thwoom, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9this article is so poorly written, it seems like there are whole words missing.
- lordmetroid, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Bioplastic??? Ohh..., you mean latex!
Yes please :) - Voxxov, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Ok, I see a trend here. Think about alot of sci-fi, and many times there is a race involved in the game/movie/series/whatever who's technology is entirely living, and all their stuff is made out of living, growing tech. I constantly am seeing the words "bio-" and "organic-" used with technology these days; bioplastics, biofuels, OLEDs, etc. and it makes me wonder if in a thousand years or so we're going to be that race with all the 'living' technology.
- blast_flame, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Nah it's just a stage. All this bio-stuff is just ripoff nanotechnology, once we get that if full we'll use it.
- moletimer, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9SOYLENT PLASTIC IS PEOPLE
- dsimp, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5Is it just me, or was that the most poorly written article ever to be dugg?
- atbnet, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2What the *****? The article makes no god damn sense. Was it written by a 10 year old? And that layout is just god awful.
- DJafrodijiak, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1what? i thought the layout was really friggen cool :(
you have something against colors and nature?

- knitefire, on 05/10/2008, -3/+2Starve the world make plastic, sounds like good policy to me.
- regeya, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Hey, when tires were made from rubber from rubber trees, did it take rubber out of the mouths of natives who lived on rubber? Bah.
Are you a smoker? Did you know that food crops can be grown where tobacco is grown?
Do you wear clothes? Did you know that food crops can be grown where cotton is grown?
Did you know that grain is used in the making of whiskey, that rice is used in the making of Budweiser, and that all types of vodka I've ever witnessed were made from foodstuff?
WE'VE GOT TO STOP STARVING PEOPLE BY GROWING NON-EDIBLE CROPS! GO NAKED AND SOBER!!!
Sounds like a terrible combination to me... - definedbywords, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Bagasse

- fudged71, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1There is a great talk on TED.com about organic design, where he said that Sony wanted his advice on how to compete with Apple in their product line. The guy said that the best way to do it is with bioplastics, because of their incredible design opportunities. They thought he was a crackpot and rejected his ideas.
he was like, "they are idiots. What the ***** do they know?"- mrSt1klBak, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0You're talking about Ross Lovegrove. He's more artist than designer. He is what some of us in the design world refer to as a "design wank". His grasp on feasibility is tenuous. There is much more to plastic than how it is made. Notebook computers need dimensional stability, scratch resistance, flame retardants, and a certain level of aesthetics in the "A" surface. There are plenty more things to consider as well. Bioplastics don't yet fit the bill. If you can't assemble the pieces because they eject from the mold too warped, or if it bursts into flames during the candle test, or shatters if dropped, or needs to be painted, then it is hardly feasible in the application.
Some day, surely...but not even close yet.

- irvin666, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I learned that quote from playing Civilization 4. it's the tech that takes you to the modern era.
- phaseblue, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2They misspelled "tomorrow"... in the domain name...
- Frostek, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Phew! for a moment I though this article was going to be something about plasborging... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazarus_Churchyard)
- TinternAbbot, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1buried for completely misunderstanding that scene.
