- Canadacdn, on 11/10/2008, -1/+14It looks like a ***** Pokemon!
- Dealjobber, on 11/10/2008, -0/+10Just think, we also have a common ancestor with the octopi. It's just a lot older.
- hartley, on 11/10/2008, -2/+11No, its Octopussies.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 11/10/2008, -0/+9IA IA CTHULHU FHTAGN
- HotGore, on 11/10/2008, -14/+22It is Octopi not Octopuses.
- katie10, on 11/10/2008, -6/+14Actually, no. No, it's not. "-i" is a Latin ending, and "octopus" isn't Latin, at all. If you're going to tack on a foreign ending, make it "octopodes," since "octopus" is derived from the Greek "oktopus."
The only technically correct plural forms are "octopuses" (English termination) or "octopodes" (Greek termination). "Octopi" is just plain incorrect.
I like to think of it being similar to "irregardless." - itachi01, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7right you are sir, right you are
- IronGoldfish, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7Everything alive on this planet has a common ancestor, so naturally, every octopus has a common ancestor. We've known this for quite a few years now.
- grahamvinyl, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8Either is acceptable. Look it up.
- bawpcwpn, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7Always seem to get my puses and my pi's mixed up.
- brokencode, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5I'm burying you for my love of Digg.
- SilverBack101, on 11/10/2008, -1/+5I think it's nice the octopuses are sharing their ancestor with each other. Sharing is nice.
- gamemaster357, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4Octillery
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Octillery_( ... - SurlyDuff, on 11/10/2008, -1/+5When news outlets use words like "living ancestor" it confuses every layman about evolution. I really wish they would stop. Perhaps this species has undergone less mutation than the octopus, but it is not an ancestor. The ancestor existed at the branching point between the octopus lineage and that of this species.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -1/+5Call me when a submarine gets destroyed by a giant squid.
- MacParrot, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3...and THAT'S how babies are made!
- Mujokan, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3That one isn't an exact dupe, unlike the one in the first post. You are allowed to have more than one article on the same general topic.
- zkolev, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus
octopuses, octopi and octopodes are all correct plural forms of octopus.
the first two are are more widely accepted.
Good job. - Firespray1138, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3How the ***** is that relevant?
- acegi, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2and which one of them is dr. zoidberg?
- theadvinci, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1This is the cutest sea creature I've seen. The fact that it's pink probably helps.
- gordonj, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1agreed, unless that specimen actually happens to be millions of years old.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1You play scrabble a lot dont you.

- MacParrot, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1It isn't. It's just his way of trying to convince someone (ANYONE) that he's had sex. Of course it's a lie.
- GreenDots, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1dupe
- counterplex, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Oh! You guys made me ink!
- glennmalcolm, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0I think it might be a similar plural to 'Fish' and 'Fishes' - fishes refers to many of one type of species: spiralling mackerel as an example. Whereas, Octopi is referred to two or more species together and Octopuses as species defining: Blue rings in close proximity.
- Stroggoth, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0Church: God created all octopuses! This is not approved - the Earth is 6000 years old.
Science: How about we find a few more common ancestors next week just to piss you off and rub salt in it? Then we'll run the LHC and find a few Higgs bosons, and turn physics up a notch. Just wait what we have in store for 2050. - jono10, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0So what is Man's closest relative?
- bonjourmr, on 11/10/2008, -1/+1It looks delicious.
- briLo, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0Here's to you MacParrot: Shut the ***** up!!!!
- jasoninoakland, on 11/10/2008, -1/+1The octopus is one of the most amazing creatures on the planet. I hope to be reincarnated as one.
- rubaaan, on 11/10/2008, -1/+18 pussies is greater than all the crap going on in this crappy thread? am i right?
- Stroggoth, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0Our closest relatives, as far as we have found, are hominids, and they are darn close:

"The skulls on the top row are of modern apes. The skulls on the 2nd row are fossils that (almost) all creationists consider apes, while the ones on the bottom row are (almost) all considered to be humans. The skulls in the 3rd row are ones on which creationists disagree as to whether they are apes or humans. (For ease of comparison, some skulls are reflected so that they all face in the same direction.) " - Stroggoth, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0Om NOM NOM!
- SSPink, on 11/10/2008, -3/+2I hope to be reincarnated as an Asian person so I can eat you raw.
- nowhereelse, on 11/10/2008, -2/+0The correct plural form is octopodes, octopi or octopuses. Octopus came to English via Latin from Greek.
- Kajico, on 11/10/2008, -4/+2dawwwwwww
- Bentearwalking, on 11/10/2008, -6/+4octopii?
- SawButter, on 11/10/2008, -5/+2Buried, already posted here:
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Incredible_Deep_S ... - chadillak, on 11/10/2008, -5/+2and that common ancestor is your mom. or at least it FELT like she had 8 arms last night in the dark. oh, and your mom doesn't like doing it with the lights on.
- Musoumitai, on 11/10/2008, -5/+0You are correct about the fact that octopus is derived from Greek. However, the plural form is not 'octopodes', but rather just 'octopode'.
- SuperKewlGirl, on 11/09/2008, -8/+3this is a dupe
