- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -33/+498I hope NASA gets some well deserved funding, it needs it.
- EmberToInferno, on 11/05/2008, -10/+420"Obama promised to lift the current ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and support recommendations on genetic engineering as proposed by the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee."
Thank you. - NeoCortex, on 11/05/2008, -6/+155As a research scientist, I approve. Go Physics!
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/05/2008, -10/+144Theres been a lot more undisclosed spending under the current administration that makes me a lot more nervous than this ever will.
I welcome with open arms any spending of our tax dollars to scientifically benefit us as opposed to telling researchers they're wrong because a book written by someone without a scientuific background says so. - PReitz, on 11/05/2008, -5/+98FTA: "Now we have to wait and see if he can deliver."
This statement holds true with all of his promises. He has set a lot of high expectations for himself, hopefully he can live up to them. - dezweber, on 11/05/2008, -66/+154Meh, all this spending talk makes me nervous.
- ousthouse, on 11/05/2008, -3/+77Yeah, but then he promised to not cut it.
- azAZ09, on 11/05/2008, -8/+81Cashman57, you are the unfortunate pawn of a propaganda/misiformation meme projected by right-wing-extremists in order to generate FUD.
Let me ask you ---How much of your personal private information do YOU release publicly online?
This is a non-issue.
Let go of your hate. - przemeklach, on 11/05/2008, -13/+86I hope money flows into stem cell research. US is behind thanks religious nut jobs having an influence on politics for too long.
- rromanchuk, on 11/05/2008, -12/+82Innovation comes from people. Not presidents.
- radicaldementia, on 11/05/2008, -5/+71I agree, but hopefully Obama will follow through with "cutting programs that don't work" and redirect some of our tax money to worthwhile scientific research. With China, India, and other scientifically developing nations stepping up their game, I think the competition will help bolster our science programs.
- guyinjapan, on 11/05/2008, -9/+75Didn't he promise to cut their budget?
- Blasphemous88, on 11/05/2008, -9/+73Is it just me, or does it just feel better living in this country now?
- BaudiIROCZ, on 11/05/2008, -23/+81It's about damn time. Now if only we could get the creationists to STFU.
- azAZ09, on 11/05/2008, -0/+58Innovation comes from people who receive grants and funding.
- einrobstein, on 11/05/2008, -5/+63You are wrong in every way possible.
Snopes article concerning the birth certificate issue:http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthcertific ...
Actual photograph of Obama's birth certificate: http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn227/Polarik/B ... - Frankyfan3, on 11/05/2008, -6/+54You mean the president is going to put science, reason & the human journey before superstition?
This is still the United States of America, right?
I didn't wake up in some parallel world where things actually make sense?!?!?! - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -3/+49My mother, paralyzed by a stroke, thanks him also.
I love my Christian faith as much as the next guy, but I just have a real problem believing that God wouldn't want us to do all we can to help our brothers, sisters and neighbors. We've had so much technology that would improve our lives that has been blocked by these crazy snake dancing religious nuts who misinterpret both the Bible and the Constitution. Reason has trumped superstition.
I hope the days when foreigners will think all Americans are barbarians and American agnostics and atheists think that Christians are backwards neanderthals are over. Thank you Barack . We can change the misconceptions about our great country.
Yes We Can! - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -5/+43You know what? Money isn't everything, but since that's the subject that matters to you, I'm tired of watching my government take my money and spend it on stupid ***** that doesn't help the people they're taking it from. I'll gladly pay my taxes if that money isn't being squandered by some freak show circus who denies science as fact.
How can 2 oil "experts" honestly believe that the world is 6000 years old? Don't they know where oil comes from? I remember sitting in class in the 2nd grade and learning about renewable verses non-renewable resources and reading about those cool looking solar cars (back in the early 80's mind you). If you had told me then that we would still be pumping oil out of the ground as our main means of energy in the year 2008, I probably would have laughed. We've had the technology. Private citizens have modified their own hybrid cars into plug-in hybrids in their own garages to get 250 miles to the gallon with the additional usage of about 25 cents of electricity a day off the grid. Stem cell research allowed Christopher Reeve to feel and move his paralized limbs at least one more time before his death. We've made serious progress in curing paralysis, cancer, and repairing the damage from strokes, but that progress has been blocked by the government. Why aren't we funding that?
Why did it take a community organizer to stand up and say that we need to be serious about getting off oil instead of just saying it? Don't they know where oil comes from?
I know Bush said we are addicted to oil and was going to do something about it, but he lied to us. I believe Obama. - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -1/+39cahsman57:
Do you honestly believe that the US government can't determine where Obama was born without him physically handing them a copy of his birth certificate? If this was a real issue, and not just some ***** rumor that guys like michael delgiorno spread to win the election, we would know about it. - AXNJAXN, on 11/05/2008, -2/+40After all, they should just stick their butt out an open window, right?
Science is expensive. - Paulorific, on 11/05/2008, -5/+42I'll be moving to a different country soon so Obama's internal affairs won't really affect me, but him funding more science will affect the whole world. I'm most excited about this. Go science!
- pathouston22, on 11/05/2008, -15/+51Obama has promised the world. Lets see what he lied about and what he will actually deliver on.
- Kravin, on 11/05/2008, -5/+40Someone sounds bitter
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -6/+40I am happy to read this, innovation and progressive thinking is the way towards a brighter future for America.
- yeahright04, on 11/05/2008, -3/+37HEY EVERYONE!!!! I bet Cashman57 thinks Obama is a Muslim!!!! Point and laugh!!!!!!
- ProfessorSYM, on 11/05/2008, -11/+44Right, because we are being so fiscally responsible right now.
- pintomp3, on 11/05/2008, -2/+35you realize you are posting on the internet, right? something that was created through government scientific research?
- ironhide, on 11/05/2008, -1/+32By the way don't make it some conspiratorial thing that his birth certificate in Hawaii is "sealed" - by Hawaiian law - they are ALL sealed.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -12/+43Obama is so yesterday's news.
- WorldGroove, on 11/05/2008, -9/+40You make over $250,000 a year?
- Bith8654, on 11/05/2008, -2/+30@Cashman57: Were you one of the people who said you couldn't wait for November 4th so you could laugh in all the democrats faces when McCain won?
- PaulC, on 11/05/2008, -2/+30I think it's so important that articles like this make the front page. Obama made so many promises during his campaign and I think we should hold him to those promises! We kept our part of the bargain by electing him, so let's hope he keeps up his end.
- Garofoli, on 11/05/2008, -8/+36Mars, here we come.
- Disgod, on 11/05/2008, -4/+30There is nothing that needs to be worked out between science and religion. Science is based on observable facts and natural phenomenon, while religion is based on blind speculation. Science has no innate morality, and is agnostic to religious beliefs, it can't say one religion is correct over another. The conflict is made up by blind followers of religion who don't understand science.
There is nothing to work out because science isn't subjective, religion is. If a scientist finds something out that contradicts religion they can't just say, "Well religion says one thing happened but all the scientific evidence points to something completely different. Religion must be right and I'll ignore all the evidence." It doesn't happen, and it shouldn't happen because all religion does is impede progress and take time away from researching potentially life saving technologies. All religions can do is deny scientific fact if it contradicts their beliefs with flimsy excuses, illogical arguments, and ad hominid attacks.
There is no need to explain the differences/discrepancies between religion and scientific fact, because religion is invariably WRONG, at least when it comes to science. It isn't shocking almost every single religion was created thousands of years ago. They didn't have modern tools, and they didn't believe in searching for evidence to prove their science. They believed that philosophy was the only way we could understand nature. There was no study of nature, just blind speculation on how things work.
Religion believes that there is a conflict between itself and science because of their religious beliefs. Science doesn't work with beliefs only with facts. Get over it, science has overwhelming evidence, while religion (Christianity specifically) has a 1900 year old bronze age book which is a compilation of even older stories and blind speculation.
"If something in science is genuinely proven, it's proven."
The only field of science which you can have 100% proven facts is mathematics. Every other field is never 100% proven due to the fact that scientists are always working at upgrading and refining their theories. - Ajajadude, on 11/05/2008, -5/+31If you spend correctly, it'll make you money in the end.
- protodon, on 11/05/2008, -3/+28Spending talk makes you nervous? You must be ***** your pants about the Iraq war right about now, huh?
- azAZ09, on 11/05/2008, -0/+25OK you asked for it ---- here is the long version.
Your head is so far up your ass that Forceps may be necessary in extracting your cranium from your small intestine. YOU are an accomplice to spreading fraudulent propaganda bordering on slander.
Obama complied in a very public way in order to keep his political opponents from turning a small distraction into a big one.
Back up your claims. The courts have already ruled on this. Berg, a muckraking shill and character assassin, was already answered by the courts.
Even a right-wing owned source has dismissed it.
http://blogs.forbes.com/trailwatch/2008/11/obamas- ...
FTA -"Most other experts differ with Berg. Snopes.com debunked Berg's claim, saying that it would make little sense for Obama to base his entire candidacy on a lie that is easily checked simply by examining state health records. Factcheck.org went even further, claiming that its researchers have seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate and have found nothing amiss."
and...
"Of course, even if the Supreme Court fails to return Berg's calls, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has already weighed in on Berg v. Obama. It dismissed Berg’s case on October 24, despite his pleas that Obama's nominee status will result in "irreparable harm to the Plaintiff and other 'Democratic Americans.'" In its 34 page decision, the court called Berg's case "frivolous and not worthy of discussion."
Having satisfied the court, and supreme court appeals denied, the case has been thrown out on its lack of merit ----"frivolous". Rather than showing evidence, Berg's main case is based on the imprecise contradictory hearsay testimony of Obama's relatives, and the fact that the local official protected the privacy of the defendant's information. His case is based on resistance encountered in and obvious political smear project, rather than factual analysis from a credible court selected source.
Also, Berg attempted to shift the burden of proof to the defendant who has already provided documents. The courts threw out the "You're lying. it is a forgery, prove you are not lying" accusation because it fails to enough evidence to claim that shenanigans are taking place. Had the argument been structured as "You're lying ----here is significant and credible evidence of my claim. Now, prove this document is not a forgery.", we may have seen the case escalate to counter arguments from Obama's lawyers. Do not confuse, as Berg has, silence and non-compliance as proof. Berg had his shot at muckraking, and he failed. Sorry but this was a political distraction tactic, but rumor-mongers like you will likely grind it into a conspiracy theory.
In the meantime, one court case that should be examined included the deposition of Karl Rove's election IT hijacking specialist. - SkippyDoorknob, on 11/05/2008, -4/+29There's more to science than just NASA
- MeatMountain, on 11/05/2008, -6/+30Please keep posting on digg, every time I read a stupid and ignorant Repug rant it adds 1 centimeter to my boner.
- rm249, on 11/05/2008, -1/+24I really don't know what to say to that.
- ironhide, on 11/05/2008, -1/+23So cash, you're saying the FEC didn't look at his information? Or are they part of the conspiracy also?
- brandondatwyler, on 11/05/2008, -0/+21there's always money in the banana stand
- einrobstein, on 11/05/2008, -3/+24Even if it's all a big conspiratorial cover up (which I'm highly skeptical of), it's pretty inconsequential which country he was born in. We know for a fact that McCain wasn't born in the United States and I don't see you raising a big stink about that. Don't cling so tightly to the letter of the constitution. Decide for yourself which parts of it are useful. Remember it was written a long time ago by people who endorsed slavery.
- arunforce, on 11/05/2008, -2/+21I'd LOVE to see the result of you taking a ***** in Zero Gravity buddy.
- artfiend77, on 11/05/2008, -1/+20Where did you think they got the money from before? Bake sales?
- chkdg8, on 11/05/2008, -7/+26Wow, the amount of funding we could be spending on R&D instead of these senseless wars is staggering. Let's just hope Obama and his advisors change their minds about Pakistan. Let's take this nation to the next level of scientific achievement.
- user14, on 11/05/2008, -3/+21LOL...where do you think the primary technology was developed that this company utilized? Undertakings of NASA cannot possibly be funded by private money...there is no profit in the developement of the technology only the optimization of the technology. Maybe the private military sector could take-on some the projects but I think there would be a problem with national security. I personally wouldn't want some of our technology on the free market.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/05/2008, -2/+20Exactly. Competition sparks the best of prosperity, where everyone is on their toes doing the best they can with what they have to work with, not just the bare minimum to get by.
- justjoehere, on 11/05/2008, -1/+18What, no love for biology?
