- schlurp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+117The main mystery: Where did they get such a long sheep?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34"Ten meters long and at least 1,000 years old"
For a second there I thought this was a story about Larry King's toenails. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The Joshua Roll - sliver of unagi, tempura crumbs, and mayonnaise. Serve fresh with hot sake.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Holy crap, calm down..deep breaths. Have you looked into Yoga or meditation?
- craftyguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Whoever put the hamster in your ass needs to be hurt badly. Last I checked, surrounding a word in underscores is not valid grammar either. Nice going *****.
- BitWarrior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Hmm...an extremely long document that no one knows what it means or why it even was created?
It sounds like they discovered the first blog. - UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You silly. They didnt use sheep for toilet paper. They used alligators.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Hey, that's from the Bible. The Bible has no historical relevance and can't be used in schools. Diggers told me so. So this story must be more right wing propaganda
- mo0o0ocow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@craftyguy
Surrounding a word or phrase in underscores means that the phrase should be underlined. Asterisks mean the text should be bold, slashes mean italics, and so forth. Annotating text like this is used frequently in environments without the ability to format the HTML as such, like in Digg comments. - LemurHorde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A slightly blurry picture of some of the art on a facsimile of the Joshua scroll
http://www.library.arizona.edu/exhibits/illuman/images/full_resolution/9-10_08.jpg - supanaturalhigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The plates; engraved with images of the biblical story of David and Goliath; are meant to memorialize an event in the life of Heraclius, who was supposed to have killed the Persian general Razatis in single combat."
Speaking of syntax... I like how they used semicolons to separate the above sentence. - Skywise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"It is a theory," said professor Lynn Jones, a professor of art history at the University of Florida and the president of the Byzantine Studies Conference. "The issue is does he have any proof."
Proof? He simulated the wrapping around a column and it fits... what more proof can you need or find? The Byzantine Study Committee for the New Memorial meeting notes?
I'm all for skepticism but c'mon... - btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Quote of the day!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can see it now:
"We'll confuse them for years to come with this useless piece of work!" - Birdoftruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3See, Because the person who said that has been in the field a long time and has a PHD, shes going to be jealous if a adjunct is right.
- SynApse77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3***** Blogspam. Go stick a Joshua Roll up your arse!
- CeltiCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not claimed to be the original text of Joshua, just Joshua in Greek. You can find Joshua written today in most of the Earth's languages. It was a copy - in Greek - to be used by Greeks.
- coldfusion055, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They also used pelicans for cement mixers, but hey, it's a living.
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really want to know why it's a copy of the Septuagint and not the original Hebrew.
- bickdigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4scan it or it didn't happened.
- pavlovscat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would guess because the people of the Christian Byzantine empire spoke Greek it made more sense to use greek on the scroll.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please do not use center alignment for a full text.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and I thought the Joshua Roll was new U2 inspired sushi !!
2 of those, 2 toro and 1 unagi please - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wasn't the book of Joshua written in Hebrew? I think it took place well before the Greeks. This article might not be very accurate.
- pavlovscat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So let me see: Heraclius was the emperor during whose reign the Muslims burst out of Arabia and took Syria, Palestine, and Egypt off the Christian Byzantine empire. He was also responsible for a short-lived heresy (monotheletism) which required an Ecumenical Council in 681 AD to abolish it. So the 10th or 11th century Orthodox Byzantines are going to honor him with a unique piece of art? I don't think so.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2of all the places to misuse an apos., "it's vs. its" is more forgiving because it breaks common rules of the english language.
so..
i'ts time that you lighten up and realize what a difficult language its' to learn and be more forgiving because it's hard to realize what its like to learn a language like english. How fun its'. - st00p1d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That stupid site makes it looks like the news report was written in verse...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1podcast about byzantine empire
http://digg.com/podcasts/12_Byzantine_Rulers_The_History_of_The_Byzantine_Empire
some of the meanings of byzantine
5. (sometimes lowercase) complex or intricate: a deal requiring Byzantine financing.
6. (sometimes lowercase) characterized by elaborate scheming and intrigue, esp. for the gaining of political power or favor: Byzantine methods for holding on to his chairmanship.
could be a useful new word for Digg stories....hahaha - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have solved the mystery: Ancient toilet paper, made from the smoothest of smooth cotton for that velvety effect.
- 8177, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@Akaji
Care Factor = 0 - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2watch it turn out to be ancient toilet paper

"OK, the author should have known better, but it's not entirely their fault.
You're just messing with Akaji, right? You wouldn't purposefully make the same mistake he's complaining about... - Limestone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0are you sure!!!!
- straightarrow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Get a life geekee........your poor marxist education is showing like your "undies" as you walk thru the mall........
- straightarrow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Aaaaaaaaaamazing !!!!! I wonder if the "good people" of Islam will lay claim to it as they have with what ever they want.....?
PROTEST TERRORISM !!!! - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5craftyguy: I'm used to GTalk, where underscores cause the text to be italicized. Unfortunately, Digg doesn't allow HTML tags or I'd have made it actually italicized.
everyone else: 'twas a small bit of sarcasm to make fun of all the grammar nazis on Digg. I probably should have mentioned that.
captinherb: but.. but.. yoga is inherantly religious and therefore should be banned from schools, and schools are the only place I do my learning at!*
*Note the sarcasm. This is in reference to an earlier article about fundamentalist Christians wanting yoga banned from some school that was teaching it as a breathing/relaxation exercise. - ThePict, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Crossbred with a long horse
see: http://www.boingboing.net/2006/12/04/long_horse_on_wikipe.html - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Yeah I should have had that one, my brains not working today. More caffeine.
Digg for you schlurp. Hilarious. + - masgrada, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Oh snap. No good dig can go without a joke about the King!

I don't give a *****. - EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Ba dum dum
- theredbicycle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Don't blame the author, blame the cluster ***** of a language we call English...
OK, the author should have known better, but it's not entirely their fault. - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -28/+4"He pointed out that the drawing is likely to be a column because the drawings and text are all drawn on a 10-degree slant, suggesting that the drawings were intended to spiral around a column [rather than be read side to side, like a book], and because of it's length." Note the "it's".
Whoever wrote this article needs to be hurt _very_ badly right now.
