New Technique Makes Skin Transparent
sciencedaily.com — If humans had see-through skin like a jellyfish, spotting disease like cancer would be a snap: Just look, and see a tumor form or grow. But humans, of course, are not remotely diaphanous. "The reason a person is not transparent is that their tissues are highly scattering," sending light waves careening through the tissue instead of straight through

- Godlike, on 02/14/2008, -0/+8Big Brother loves you.
- feckineejit, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3we could see you're retarded before you even post on digg.
- sanman, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1We'd be too busy throwing up from being grossed out by each other.
We'd all be able to see what you ate, and what it turned into.
- sotopheavy, on 02/14/2008, -5/+34Why not clothes transparent and skin visible... You're doing it wrong.
- simpleid, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9stop wearing cloths. done.
stop wearing skin? .... that's tougher.- trogdor282, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4"hey, i think my sunburn is finally gone!" - Master Shake, sans skin
- Terr01, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1I've always imagined someone doing this with a computer and those glass blocks, so that postprocessing would reveal the scene behind them.
You know, these blocks: http://www.all-westglass.com/images/92.jpg

- BigManOnCampus, on 02/14/2008, -11/+2I read that as... "New Technique Makes Sin Transparent"... which caused quite a double-take as I don't need my "sins" being anything close to transparent.
- MacEnvy, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3A "sin" is a human construct. They do not exist outside of your own personal morality. Thus, one man's sin is another man's cherished experience, and to make "sins" transparent would only serve to make humanity in general more divisive and judgmental of others.
/mental masturbation- BigManOnCampus, on 02/14/2008, -1/+1And I was just joking around
- feckineejit, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3Just thinking about doing something wrong is a sin, according to the church, so everyone is a sinner. except for us atheists, who only care about each other and kindness and happiness, because seeing as how there is no afterlife, you only have this one life to consider and enjoy.

- MacEnvy, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2If they can do it for cats they can do it for people:

- palehorse864, on 02/14/2008, -1/+21Reminds me of the screwed up Fantastic Four team on venture brothers. The invisible woman could only make her skin turn invisible.
- guibom, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1But you could only see her muscles, right? Bummer.
- mllawso, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1At my school, one of the professors was doing a similar experiment with laser light scattering: his goal was to use lasers in place of x-rays for body imaging. The best part was he used a fishtank of non-dairy creamer to simulate the scattering properties of human tissue.
- fuhcough, on 02/14/2008, -2/+5crap it's already hard enough for my girlfriend to find it...
- jwolcott, on 02/14/2008, -0/+13I'll take my chances with Cancer rather than look like a jellyfish and never get laid again, thank you very much.
- phr0s7b1tt3n, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2that'd definitely help out alot in the medical fields and perverts wanting to get a good look at your insides.

http://www.retrojunk.com/details_commercial/574/ - drmangrum, on 02/14/2008, -3/+5This is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Skin is opaque for a reason. Our skin has evolved to keep our internal organs nice and safe from the sun.
Fish that happen to be clear are clear for a reason.- Anthropoid, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0Sorry if I missed the sarcasm, but I don't think doctors/scientists would typically be using rays from the sun for this procedure...
- Anthropoid, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3Oh, silly me. You probably thought the clear skin would be permanent. But yeah, no, it's not.
- TraumaDrama, on 02/14/2008, -1/+4This is bad news for the breast enhancement industry.
- NinjaBoy, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2They will just start selling ads on the implants...
- DrummerAndrew, on 02/14/2008, -0/+13This is fantastic technology. Just so you people realize, this doesn't make your skin clear forever. Only for the moments they're doing the technique on you. And even then it isn't clear to a normal person looking at it, just the specialized equipment used with it. Amazing breakthroughs.
- nailz420, on 02/14/2008, -0/+7I bet we all look like a bag of jelly beans inside.
- sugarkisses888, on 02/14/2008, -4/+0That's just... gross. I get ooged out enough seeing my veins through the skin on my arm. I don't want to be walking around like one of those clear telephones that were all the rage when I was a teen.
- oulyt, on 02/14/2008, -1/+0that would not be right i smell privecy issue
- RobsaysHello, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1funny, I just smell *****.
- notfred, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2I don't see how it's practical - you need to precisely place a hologram onto living, stretching tissue. The tolerances are very precise.
- Kypt, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Anyone ever read the book Expendable by James Alan Gardner? That is kind of what happened to people at some point in time. They began doing stuff to be healthier etc until they became transparent...then again that's the other extreme, if ALL of you is see through then what's the point? Anyway, the art showed some very sexy transparent girls though :P
- anononon, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1And you think varicose veins are unsightly? Yeeeesh.
- plarp, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1this will make skin cancer go away.. however every other form of cancer would increase.. there is a reason why our skin is NOT see through.
- Anthropoid, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0This procedure sounds less dangerous than a surgical operation that also exposes organs for a period of time.
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Karl Pilkington will sue for patent violation.
- ncredblstrength, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1and then he'll eat a knob... at night (not during the daytime, he's got a weak stomach)

sally impossible from the Venture brothers has invisible skin, the less useful version of the invisible woman. - Anthropoid, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1I love how the analogies present hypothetical situations which seem more complicated than the actual situation (reversing time and billiard ball movements). Not that the actual situation seems simple to me.
I also love the quote, "Until we did this study, it wasn't clear..." - ncredblstrength, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2"If humans had see-through skin like a jellyfish, spotting disease like cancer would be a snap"
Yeah and if my Aunt had a penis, she'd be my Uncle. - tbenathan, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2This is the next step for Michael Jackson.
- DermDoc, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I have seen under the skin my friends. It is not pretty.

- CATSCEO, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I want some!
- TheAtomicMoose, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1If you had transparent skin... wouldn't your organs fry in the sun?
