abcnews.go.com — A nasal spray containing a naturally occurring brain hormone called orexin A reversed the effects of sleep deprivation in monkeys, allowing them to perform like well-rested monkeys on cognitive tests.

- lsfloyd, on 12/30/2007, -3/+14I think I will stick with my morning cup of coffee.
- Strawgate, on 12/30/2007, -3/+12As long as it doesn't have any major side effects it would be good to have on those days where you don't even want to get up. But coffee has lots of caffeine, and a lot of people slowly get addicted to caffeine over the years. For the next week try not having coffee in the morning, and write down if you have headaches or migraines during the day from the slow withdrawal of caffeine.
- Klisk, on 12/30/2007, -8/+3I haven't had coffee in years. I could never tolerate the taste, it makes me gag, so I never understood the caffeine addiction related to coffee at all. (I don't drink soda either because it irritates my stomach.)
- coolshorty, on 12/30/2007, -1/+16any other ailments you need to share with the rest of us?
- KloroFormd, on 12/30/2007, -0/+9I had diahrea this morning, but I don't feel the need to tell Digg users all about it. Oh wait...
- ErrorS, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3I've had a killer backache for 3 days now..
- Markpdotcom, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2I have a mouth ulcer... :( Anyone else?
- knobtwiddler, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1hahah "darpa funded" big surprise
um sorry this was developed to create super combat zombies that don't need sleep, not for us "non-expendable" types. - Speed, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2Actually, caffeine addiction can manifest within a couple of weeks (I heard somewhere that it can actually manifest as quickly as within one week).

- dethl, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1Unfortunately for me caffeine triggers panic attacks. This spray sounds like the perfect alternative for people like me.

- aidave, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Does cyanide enhance your mind?
- darthjure, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3That was the first thing that came to my mind even before I read the article. The FDA will step in and prevent this from getting to the general public. And that was exactly what they said in the last line of the article.
- joshuagor44, on 12/30/2007, -3/+5olol pot makes me thing bester

- apolloae, on 12/30/2007, -2/+38Isn't there more to sleep than just eliminating "sleepiness"?
- Hermitwise, on 12/30/2007, -2/+7Yeah so you could still sleep every two days to get all of the REM cycle needs, but sleeping every other day with this stuff would add years to your conscious life.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 12/30/2007, -1/+9years to do what? Lazily surf around digg?:P
- renegadeafk, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5Hell yeah
- edicius, on 12/30/2007, -0/+7Plus there's Halo and *****.
- Klisk, on 12/30/2007, -3/+4Why the hell would I want to stay awake when the one thing I always look forward to is sleeping? Seriously. I have gotten out of bed maybe three times in the past 2 weeks of vacation, and I sleep in 16 hour shifts. I LOVE it. I wouldn't WANT to do anything else! Being awake means frustration and boredom even on vacation.
- emoj0388, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1Maybe you should look to find something that doesn't irritate/bore you...there's got to be something.

- Rikkochet, on 12/30/2007, -0/+8Yeah, there is mental refreshment, a lot of healing happens, oh, and sometimes careening into oncoming traffic and killing eight people.

rebuilding of muscles? - sonnybobiche, on 12/30/2007, -1/+3Short term memory is consolidated into long term memory. Without this step, you die after ten-or-so days without sleep.
- technoredneck, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2True, but some people (like those with narcolepsy) still feel sleepy even when they've gotten a good 8-10 hours worth.
- Tahiri, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1People with narcolepsy can take Alertec already...
- Hermitwise, on 12/30/2007, -2/+7Yeah so you could still sleep every two days to get all of the REM cycle needs, but sleeping every other day with this stuff would add years to your conscious life.

- Postalwrker27, on 12/30/2007, -0/+16So instead of snorting cocaine, you just spray it...Nice.
- Klisk, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6I do cocaine. G-G-G-G-YEAAAh.
- kent1146, on 12/30/2007, -0/+33Putting things in your nose that eliminates sleepiness?
Does this remind anybody else of the concept behind cocaine? - deviantsteve, on 12/30/2007, -2/+7Didn't they already make cocaine and meth for this?
- Stroggoth, on 12/30/2007, -1/+2This might eliminate the immediate feeling of sleepiness, but it won't be a "cure" for sleep because the brain needs sleep to repair/grow/recover from use. Probably these people will come down with classic sleep deprivation symptoms over time, but in a more severe way.
- nospaces, on 12/30/2007, -1/+11Dugg because sleep deprivation in monkeys is identical to humans who combat stress, jobs and obesity.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 12/30/2007, -1/+5Inaccurate. We don't "combat" these things. If anything we embrace and fill our lives with them.
- Apoc, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3After all, IT'S AMERICA BABY!!
- yetAnotherCroc, on 12/30/2007, -1/+5Inaccurate. We don't "combat" these things. If anything we embrace and fill our lives with them.
- fixty, on 12/30/2007, -0/+29It's about ***** time. Now we can really put our monkeys to work.
- Wugie, on 12/30/2007, -3/+2This sounds so healthy
- tobikow, on 12/30/2007, -2/+4Lets see what combats sleep deprivation... caffeine, nasal spray... i wonder if actually sleeping would do the trick?
- Klisk, on 12/30/2007, -1/+3Sleeping does not power or encourage the american capitalist drone machine.
- philhatesyou, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2I wish this had been on the market for the past 3 years.

- Kumah, on 12/30/2007, -3/+5Do people just not show up on digg for a week and then randomly post an article they just read?
Needless to say, dupe. - IpHa, on 12/30/2007, -1/+6This was just on the front page a few days ago.
- throttlefull, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6Hmm according to Wikipedia, "Orexin increases the craving for food, and correlates with the function of the substances that promote its production."
Doesn't this sound like yet even another drug that so many people love and use?- sonnybobiche, on 12/30/2007, -0/+3Antipsychotics also increase the craving for food.
- bsdboy, on 12/30/2007, -1/+5May as well put caffeine, nicotine and oxycontin in there.
- gogog0, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1what!??! oxycodone is an opiate. it would make you much more tired.
- BlackTye, on 12/30/2007, -2/+3Lemme guess, may cause cancer or depression.

- Duilen, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1As amazing as this sounds, I think I would wait a year or two before testing it out.
- SpookyPig, on 12/30/2007, -2/+2This exact story made the front page 2-3 days ago.
- RealJimShady, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1OFN
- earthceltic, on 12/30/2007, -2/+4no side-effects my ass.. it's called psychological dependency.
- manova, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1It has to be reinforcing to cause psychological dependency.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1I think the increased productivity is pretty reinforcing. Just because rats won't self-administer doesn't mean humans won't.
- manova, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1It has to be reinforcing to cause psychological dependency.
- fartbuttes, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4*tschhh* Ahh yeah, that's the stuff.

- Jason4000, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1I wonder how many of us would do a 48 hour shift and then take that 5 day weekend with this stuff.
- MewtwoReturns, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1If this became widespread, work would expect you to work 80-100 hour weeks, there really wouldn't be a such thing as a weekend anymore.
- rxbudian, on 12/30/2007, -1/+1possible effect can be reduced natural production of the chemical by the body. plus someone using this excessively will have health issues because sleep is the time where the body repairs itself.

? - duczduczducz, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1cocaine?
- AdamGeld, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2It could eliminate the feeling of being tired, but that does not mean you can stay up indefinately. You still need to sleep, your body depends on it for it's basic functioning. It would make sense though that as your brain sensed you needed sleep, it would release a chemical that made you want to fall asleep or cause you to dose-off.
Taking that chemical unnaturally would be extremely dangerous, because you could misuse it and cause permenant damage to your body. On the bright side, it would help accellerate the Darwin theory of evolution... - LogicBomB, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I support the idea on a mission-critical basis. Using it during exam period, cramming sessions, meeting deadlines or driving long distances for example.
Using it for the hell of it to try an eliminate sleep is a bad idea IMHO. I refuse there to believe that sleep can be replaced with drugs on anything more than a very short term basis. - Onimua, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Yes, let's mess with natural methods even more. That's a GREAT idea.
[/sarcasm] - gabrielg01, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Eliminating "sleepiness" may get you killed. Sleep is very necessary to maintain a good immune system. You play with fire, you get burned.
