- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Coca-cola's already bad enough for you. If it makes your face go numb, then at least you wont feel it making your teeth rot out of your head.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If they extract the cocaine, where does it go?
- cvelusc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Will they be offering a Diet "Coca-Sek" as well? =)
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The cola, tea or any thing else made from coca leaves are not harmful. When you process the leaves and make it a drug is when you have to worry about it. I once travel to Peru and they gave me coca tea to prevent "soroche" which is something you get when you go to very high altitudes. I can’t say that it work, but I didn’t feel a thing. It was just like a bitter tasting tea. It is a just a plant, it is just used the wrong way by many people.
- spellbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have recently aquired some coca tea and have found it to be one of the softest, most rewarding stimulants out there. Since im in the middle of writing finals for my third year of a comp sci degree it has really helped my waining motivation. I wish to comment and say that the effects are less than a strong cup of coffee, I have been drinking it for several weeks and have noticed no withdrawl or tolerance. It is a shame that the US government has attached such a detrimental stigma to this plant as its effects are nothing at all like cociane. in fact you would need many many pounds of raw coca leaves and a fairly strong background in organic chemistry to produce the smallest quanitity of cocaine. For further reading i suggest, http://cocamuseum.com/main.htm - the bolvian coca musem.
***** the war on drugs, its a lost battle and anyone who is too ignorant to realize that should be boiled alive in the tons of toxic chemicals the US drops on columbia every year. - chabuhi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What do you expect with the username he/she chose? Okay - mod me down for being mean.
- STRYCH9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6There is no possible way to find some on the net...via Ebay or anything.
Where is my real hardcore Absinte and strychinine fruit roll ups? - Yeyui, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5...Since this process cannot extract the cocaine alkaloids at a molecular level, the drink still contains trace amounts of the stimulant[5]. The United States DEA oversees the importation of coca for Coca-Cola, and later sale of the extracted cocaine to the drug industry where it is used in the creation of many of the common drugs whose names end in "-aine" (such as Procaine).[6]
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola#Urban_Legends_and_unusual_uses - burke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Any kind of cola is OK by me.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Who knows what the cocaine is used for? My guess is that the higher up executives use it for a little "pick me up" after all that hard paperwork, if you know what I mean.
I think it's wrong that Coca Cola, an American company, can handle cocaine, but the people of South America cannot, simply because the UN are a bunch of jackasses. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From what I understand, it does have an effect when not "purified" to that famous white powder, it's just a far less potent effect. Sort of like those airline sickness sniffer tubes, assuming you don't break them open and chew on the thing inside.

I think some of you remember this article: The Mystery of the Green Menace (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.11/absinthe.html ) - krazykit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Except that the coca is unrefined, and will do little more than make you breathe a little faster.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am sure that CocaCola will use their billion dollar legal department to crush any attempts at commercializing this product.
They will say "How dare you use the word Coca in your product. We own the trademark/copyrights/etc, even though we originally stole the word from you 100 years ago. Sux to be you." - JesseJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I bet Coca-Cola could get the US Goverment to nuke them? Isn't that the way things work around here?
- boxomojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I'm thinking the small-time stills in Frace in the late 1800's were on par with moonshine, and the "side-effects" of absinthe were due to it not being distilled properly (i.e. poison)."
you're thinking wrong..the "side effects" were due to it being distilled with wormwood, which has hallucinogenic properties. - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@wolfiezero
The answer to your question is NO. Cocaine was never a main ingredient in Coka-Cola.
Cocaine comes from the same leaves they use/used to flavor the drink, but they never added cocaine itself to the mix. (That's not to say that a bit isn't in there somewhere, from the leaves themselves.)
(For those readers who won't click on a link (such as pegisys's link above) to save their life...)
From Wikipedia:
"Contrary to popular belief, the coca leaf extract cocaine was never added to Coca-Cola, per se. Because cocaine is naturally present in untreated coca leaves, small amounts of cocaine were also present in the beverage. Today's Coca-Cola uses "spent" coca leaves, those that have been through a cocaine extraction process, to flavor the beverage. Since this process cannot extract the cocaine alkaloids at a molecular level, the drink still contains trace amounts of the stimulant." - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OK Simple math:
30lbs of leaves yields 300 bottles of beverage.
So, 1/10 lb, or ~45grams of leaf, makes one bottle.
The leaves have about 2% alkaloids, if I recall correctly.
So each bottle of the beverage may have up to 9/10 gram of alkaloid.
THAT would be VERY STRONG.
Of course, if the leaves were just boiled in water, without the addition of an alkaline substance, then the resultant syrup may have very little of the cocaine alkaloids present.
In that case, what do they do with the remains of the leaves, after boiling?
;-) - Trinitrogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll take an 8-ball...oops I mean 12 pack...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm wrong in every sence? LOL! I was talking about the soft drink making your teeth rot out of your head, not cocaine. Not only do you need reading comprehension and spelling lessons, you should probably lay off the cocaine too.
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15cocaines a hell of a drug.
.....
cocaines a hell of a drug. - artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Power to the people. Good for them, if I ever go over ther I'll be sure to drink one of those.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I have always wandered what it would taste like. Or if it had enough to numb the mouth. Id buy it.
- lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When Columbus arrived to America he tough that he was in the Indies so he called all the natives Indians. That name is still used today to identify native Americans.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.spiritscorner.com is a good source for absinthe, i've used them twice now. slow shipping from spain though (2 months). if you buy a lot they'll upgrade you to airmail for free (2 weeks). i've never had anything seized by US customs.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no, but they may make a new diet vanilla cherry cola with lime and zero calories
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.seborabsinth.com/ for the absinthe. the fruit roll ups? not that i know of... if you're meaning acid with strychnine, it doesn't exist. i dont know any chemist that would adulterate a potentially valuable drug with something so expensive and hard to get ahold of (not to mention it kind of kills your clients) if some chemist/dealer is trying to rip someone off they'll sell them a placebo. not something with a chemical such as strychnine, that will cost you more money than you would get back in the sale, and eliminate your clients in the process.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For North Americans, it's kind of difficult to find coca leaves. At least you can ingest massive quantities of poppy seeds.
- GabeDiaz, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2if they make Vanilla-Coca-Sek I'm all in!!! wooohooo
My father's uncle used to grow coca leaves in Peru...I wonder if the farm is still there.
You would probably have to drink too many to count to have any negative effects on you. But I drink soda often and can finish a case in a few days. If Coca-Sek is tastey I'd prob be dead in a month. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Diluted absinthe? Van Gogh would not have painted anything remotely important if all he had was weak absinthe.
Sigh, at least there's still have acid. - koguma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"There are cases of people dipping 80 coca teabags into a teapot and getting classic cocaine toxicity from drinking it," Thompson said.
Time to sign up an importer!
On the other hand,if you dump 80 Lipton teabags into a pot, you're getting high too. - ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder what Coca-Cola does with all that extracted cocaine.... No wonder they have more money than god.
- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6yes, but they removed cocaine in 1905
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you shouldn't really experience any tolerance, since you're just drinking tea. cocaine has a sudden tolerance effect, which only lasts for a rather short amount of time. and withdraw, you'll never go through that physically. cocaine withdraw is only mental. its not physically addicting like opiates and alochol, only mentally addicting... which, well, washing your hands is mentally addicting:0
though, i wouldnt say you need a fairly strong background in chemisty to produce cocaine... ive been to an overseas lab before, and its rather not as "high tech" as one would think. the most expencive item was a microwave for aiding in the drying process of the final product. but you are right, it is not as trivial as growing weed, you need far more land to produce cocaine on any profitable scale. - eHardOn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Where'd you learn that, Cheech? DRUG SCHOOL!?"
- lucaskiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I asked a nurse about that once when I was taking a drug test before being hired and she said one would have to ingest at least a cup of poppy seeds before it would show up on the test at all. So when you say "massive", yeah, it would have to be.
- hags2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know what the big deal is about people evangelizing the use of OR abstinence from drugs, saying things like "drugs are evil" or "drugs are the answer!". It's a personal choice, and I think your body is something that you should have absolute control over, to do with what you will. You know "keep your laws off my body"? I think that applies to EVERYTHING.
BTW, I won't ever touch cocaine not only because I know about the long-term effects, but I would probably like it/get addicted to it. The only drug for me is a few beers occasionally (and that is most certainly a drug) and Advil. - Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1skyshock: "way to get coca-cola (with or without cocaine) to make your teeth fall out, is to soak your teeth in the cola rich substance until you teeth begin to rubberize and eventually the roots will decay and fall out."
who needs reading lessons? spelling lessons i could use, i do not deny that. but the ability to spell does not indicate ones ability to comprehend. - microtopian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought I read somewhere that cocaine in coke was a myth. I don't know, maybe my memory doesn't serve me correctly from all that coke :P
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coca-Cola was originally a "miracle tonic" consisting almost exclusively of red wine and cocaine. It was invented by a pharmacist in Atlanta who, because of a mysterious "mental imbalance" common to pharmacists of the time (see first sentence) was unable to properly market his product. Asa Chandler eventually ended up purchasing the sweetened and de-toxified soft drink (Version 3.0?)and thus began the Coca-Cola story.
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1one can always do a thujone extraction from wormwood (the alkaloid responsible for "getting you high" from drinking absinthe.) but of course to do that would give one most of the chemistry accessories one needs to make ecstasy:) and well... id never be able to produce any thujone considering what else i could make...
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wheres apple sueing their ass? its up to the governing country to abide by those laws. alot of eastern counrties are rather lax on the policy of priacy and copywrite infringement... thank you very much.
