- BrokenVisage, on 04/11/2009, -0/+16Nobody expects the Spanish bead cache!
- byoung2, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6Isn't Georgia out of the way if you're going from China to the Philippines?
- michaelrsa, on 04/11/2009, -2/+7Wait, they're basing the reach of the Spanish Empire based on beads? Man, I must have been way off in my measurement style. Here I was using South America and southern North America as my guide to the reach of the Spanish Empire.
- Cerebron, on 04/11/2009, -1/+5Funded pirates aren't pirates, they're privateers.
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4Its not necessarily a linear path. St Catherine's had a pretty big mission on it, and so would have been a medium size trade port, but most trade would have been coming from or going to Cuba or St. Augustine, which would be receiving ships coming and going between the far east (with Manila and China being major stops over there) and Spain itself.
The explanation in the article is not particularly well worded, I will give you that, but that is what was going on.
Hope that helps explain.
(I'm an Archaeologist from Georgia) - groo68, on 04/11/2009, -0/+3it's spelled "eh"
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -0/+3Heh!
But, I would if were digging St. Catherines. Not the first big cache there. - airwalkery2k, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2Wait. Why would the Spanish stop in the US state of Georgia if they were sailing from China to the Philippines?
- y0y0howsdajell0, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2That's pretty cool. Beads are awesome because it can provide a good dating item for artifacts. I was digging on a site and found a blue glass faceted bead. The cool thing? Those were used only by slaves during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. So we could date what we were finding to slave sites...
- manx27, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2Lol! Me too!
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2AH HA HA HA
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2St. Catherine's Island is a wonderful site. Glass beads were a pretty major trade good in those days. This isn't the first big bead cache found there, but it may be the biggest. Pretty impressive.
I wish I could have worked on that site this summer. Ah well, maybe next. - DDION, on 04/11/2009, -3/+5I trust anal bead prices will plummet due to this.
- Cerebron, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1Guerrilla fighter perhaps, but not terrorist. John Paul Jones may have been a terrorist though.
- QQsomeMore, on 04/11/2009, -1/+2Saint Catherines Island, meet Mardi Gras.
- robbiedo, on 04/11/2009, -1/+2It would have been a more interesting article if they find the beads on Manhattan Island.
- gozroth, on 04/11/2009, -1/+2I understand that they have a pretty substantial cache but what about their front side bus?
- macmcraeart, on 04/11/2009, -1/+2back when pirates were funded by the "good" guys. funny how perspectives shift but people are pretty much the same.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1It's not gonna work you forgot the hidden bead cache
Gogo: start / run / type: $beadcache$ / select all / delete - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1I thought this was funny.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1So they found a bead cache georgia? The french used to ripoff the natives in Canada so im wondering who was getting taken over there
- charlie6969, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1DUGG for making me drool! (I make jewelry; currently pearl addicted.)

- macmcraeart, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1bwahahahahah you know what they say - the wieners write history.
(queen's english) "Sir Drake was a privateer not a PIRATE - my good man. But george washington was definately a terrorist and NOT a freedom fighter". - Wade, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1Bees?

- camilos007, on 04/11/2009, -6/+4Spanish Empire Might :
- Killing of millions of Indians in the name of religion and power.
- Stealing all of Latin America's wealth.
- Then 'losing' their empire status to England because they're too stupid to manage it.
Real nice empire.
- Sixteh, on 04/11/2009, -6/+3Funny how I saw the title and thought it was somehow the Onion.
