Nervous People 'Are Likely To Be Right-Wing'
independent.co.uk — People who are easily startled by loud bangs or gruesome pictures are more likely to vote for right-wing policies compared to calmer people who take a more liberal approach to life, according to a psychological study of political beliefs.

- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -5/+3Ya considering they helped make it like 1000 times worse. Actually it is not a right wing, left wing debate. It is all too obvious with these two "choices" that they have the same foreign policy platforms, it's just the delivery that is different.
- badastronaut, on 09/21/2008, -6/+0A loud noise is a little different than 3000 dead bodies.
- jmpeagle, on 09/21/2008, -5/+3I can't believe you can make a joke about terrorism especially in this post 9/11 world. Only McCain (who was a POW) can fix the problems and take on the terrorists.
- TheGuruStud, on 09/21/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure if I should look at your previous comments or label this obvious sarcasm.
Diggers, what do you think? - TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/21/2008, -1/+4@jmpeagle
I can't believe that you would use faulty logic in this post 9/11 world. Having been a POW or a veteran doesn't mean that someone will be good at setting foreign policy.
But if Americans were so interested in electing a veteran for their experience, they should have elected John Kerry four years ago. - jmpeagle, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2calm down...it was sarcasm

- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -6/+7Your so right! Now let's send someone elses kid to die in Iraq!
- Vhaeos, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3His name is "DrPaul2008." He is probably not for the war.
- mafiaitalia22, on 09/21/2008, -5/+6i take it you have a study to back that claim up, doc.
- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -2/+4Also, what is this sense of "entitlement" that you speak of? You mean like the recent stock market bailout for the ultra elite?
- DrPaul2008, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2Perhaps I should have said it another way... I'd bet that not only are nervous people more likely to be neocons, but that jealous people are more likely to be "left-wing".
The political spectrum in this country is predominantly made up of a bunch statists who are either incompetent cowards, the "right", or the incompetent jealous, the "left".
I enjoy it when people shed light on how the slaves in this country allow fear to dominate them, but all you ridiculous socialists out there in digg land shouldn't be any more disillusioned then you already are, thinking the "left" is somehow better then the "right". You're all a blight on those who work towards liberty.

- iseerightards, on 09/20/2008, -26/+33Cowards are definitely drawn to the GOP.
I have NEVER in my life imagined there could be so many right wing cowards who still cheer for OTHER people to go die in wars.
It's revolting.
The Republicans practice cowardice driving politics, you can see it in everything they do.- Pedestrian101, on 09/21/2008, -21/+8Wow you're an idiot.

- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -4/+4The Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam. All wars pushed by the Democratic Party.
There goes that logic.- Ajajadude, on 09/21/2008, -1/+5Yeah, the Civil War was unnecessary, same with WWI and WWII. Vietnam was carried on by a Republican, too.
- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2"Hey, hey LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?"
- dannyboy3020, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5Today's Democratic Party isn't what it was 150 years ago.
- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -3/+1And the GOP was four years old 150 years ago. Anything else useless to add?
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5@dexter411
I think that the point being made was that the positions and platforms of the various parties isn't today what it was historically. IIRC, the democratic party actually used to be a much more *conservative* party. At some point, the party swung over to the left, and as such: "Today's Democratic Party isn't what it was 150 years ago."
But don't let that stop you from making specious arguments.
- toroidal, on 09/21/2008, -2/+5You should read your history books.
During the Civil War, the Democratic Party held the views that modern day Republicans have, and Republicans held the views that modern day Democrats have.
There goes that logic, aka -(- A) = A- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -3/+2So modern day Republicans aren't against the Fugitive Slave Act, eh?
Way to ignore Vietnam. Wanna go ahead and claim that the GOP of 1960 falls in line with today's Democratic Party? - nick111, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2This isn't about republican vs democrat, it's about conservative vs liberal.
By normal western standards of today, both American parties are fairly right-wing. Likewise politics across the board in previous eras.
- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -3/+2So modern day Republicans aren't against the Fugitive Slave Act, eh?
- PleaseJustDie, on 09/21/2008, -3/+4You know, a large portion of our Armed Forces over there dying right now are conservatives and/or registered republicans, thank you very much for calling them cowards, *****.
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Well, given the massive disproportionality of this invasion/occupation, and the various incidences of torture, killing of civillians etc... I'm not sure that "coward" isn't always entirely inaccurate - "war criminal" (if we are to apply the terms of Nuremburg... you know, the standards that we expect others to live up to) certainly is. Not everyone, but some, certainly... and certainly in the eyes of the rest of the world.
But that's not really the point is it? What you're doing is what cowards always do... try to use the untouchable saintlyness of the armed forces to deflect critisicm from the craven cowardice of those that sent them there in the first place.
Conservatives. Liberals never wanted this. We protested in our millions for it not to happen before the invasion even took place. - volpeculus, on 09/21/2008, -1/+0Well, except for liberal hawks, that is. Besides that, Nick, you were totally on target.
- PleaseJustDie, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Maybe you should read some history Nick, Both democrats and republicans authorized this invasion into Iraq. And guess what, we aren't the only ones there, there are also Canadian, British, Australian and Italian troops in Iraq with us as part of the Coalition of the willing.
And I have friends that have died over there so you can shut the ***** up right now trying to call them cowards or war criminals because you don't know the people that are over there and god dammit my friends that died were great people and should be honored for their sacrifice, whether you think it was worthless or not.
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Well, given the massive disproportionality of this invasion/occupation, and the various incidences of torture, killing of civillians etc... Oh...

Mark Twain.- Shedoblyde, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Twain didn't say that. Read the Wikiquote page about Statistics. It says: "Leonard H. Courtney, attributed to Benjamin Disraeli by Mark Twain".
- poprocksandsoda, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Twain took the original and phrased it differently to form what you see above. There's no doubt he didn't originate the governing thought, however he also didn't use the original phrase verbatim.

- mafiaitalia22, on 09/21/2008, -3/+17"The study, published in the journal Science, investigated 46 Americans with strong opinions..."
The results found are interesting, but I don't think there is enough proof to go ahead and make flat-out statements about it. Regardless of my politics (liberal) this study seems to be lacking scientific merit. You can't conduct a study of 46 people and expect to get accurate results.- 955701, on 09/21/2008, -3/+2yes you can. In statistics you need 30+ samples.
n=30, baby!
Example: http://www.statsoft.com/textbook/stbasic.html
search on n=30 - Cattywampus, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Maybe it just means that people with strong opinions tend to be nervous.
- Czechxican, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Yeah the experiment is pretty bad too. 3 images determined this out of a possible 9 images? This sounds like a student created experiment.
And 46 people is in no way statistically relevant to general populations.
- 955701, on 09/21/2008, -3/+2yes you can. In statistics you need 30+ samples.
- galahan, on 09/21/2008, -3/+26"The study, published in the journal Science, investigated 46 Americans..." 46, wow, if that's not statistically significant, I don't know what is...

- jinchoung, on 09/21/2008, -12/+7very unsurprising. the whole "POLITICS OF FEAR" is basically designed to make everyone who's the least bit afraid into a republican. but what i don't get is why christians (religious) tend toward fear and republicanism.... why are christians sooooooo afraid of everything? why are christians afraid of gays? why are christians afraid of the decay of societal morals? why are christians afraid of sex on tv? why are christians afraid of science and evolution? HOW WEAK IS THEIR GOD ANYWAY? and what part of "PILGRIM" don't they understand? why are they fighting to make the world christian when they KNOW that this world is NOT THEIRS. and why do they seek to make society conform to their beliefs when such conformation does a non-christian conformer NO GOOD WHATSOEVER. they're STILL GOING TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET. why don't they just mind their own houses, mind their own children, NOT BE SURPRISED when the tv and music and movies tend to be hostile to their faith (gee, guess what the bible says!) and chill the f out. DON'T BE AFRAID. DON'T LIVE IN FEAR. if you have faith, SHOW IT and don't be afraid. wtf?!

That last line was intended to be a joke, but now I recant. XD - jinchoung, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1no, this rant is directed at the "religious right". and from what i see of them, they are ENTIRELY driven by fear. if there's a "religious left", where the f are they?! get the f on the field for cryin' out loud - before they start making legislation about illegalizing premarital sex and rest on sunday for pete's sake.

From my experience, the liberal worldview is definitely more relaxed, more give and take, more peaceful, more thoughtful, more humanitarian, more helpful, more resolute, more articulate, more caring, more equitable, more reasonable, the list is endless.
The conservative worldview on the other hand is running around, slapping your head like it's on fire, and screaming *****, *****, *****, the boogyman is everywhere!!!!
We need a war on DRUGS, a war on IMMIGRANTS, a war on TERRORISTS, a war on POVERTY, a war on CRIME, a war on ABORTION, a war on ATHEISTS, a war on ABSOLUTELY ***** EVERYTHING 'cos it's all so ***** scary!!!
That's all the article was pointing out, it's not like it's something we didn't know already.
- ChayD, on 09/21/2008, -3/+3Of course we are, and I'm glad that you find that amusing.

CMON, DIGG, I ASKED POLITELY.- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Do you see the way we fight? We fight side to side, against each other. Kind of like the poor stealing from the poor. We should be fighting up and down, against the corrupt ruling class, but part of them controlling us is that they make us fight against ourselves to distract us from fighting them.
Racism, sexism, religious differences, left wing vrs right wing, coke vrs pepsi... It's all the same. Just a distraction from who we really should be fighting. Just look at the bailouts of the rich again, while the poor lose their houses. - jperson, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Request GRANTED on November 5th.
- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Do you see the way we fight? We fight side to side, against each other. Kind of like the poor stealing from the poor. We should be fighting up and down, against the corrupt ruling class, but part of them controlling us is that they make us fight against ourselves to distract us from fighting them.
- algaeturd, on 09/21/2008, -5/+7Also likely to be very undereducated and very misinformed.
- rjwusa, on 09/21/2008, -16/+6Liberals are more relaxed because they are on prescription drugs from their doc, or are more likely to do it themselves by abusing alcohol and illegal drugs. Nothing new there.
- omnithought, on 09/21/2008, -1/+4There's nothing prescription about weed, my friend.
- rjwusa, on 09/21/2008, -9/+1Liberals must self medicate to escape reality, thus they tend to be calmer when stoned. Pot is fine if one wants to be mildly anesthetized.
- kayala, on 09/21/2008, -1/+10rjwusa feels better when he can generalize about an entire group of people unfairly attributed to a make-believe ideology that he created to make those people look bad. Intellectually lazy much?
- rjwusa, on 09/21/2008, -8/+1Of course the entire group of leftists never generalize and are entirely intellectually superior. Never mind that the the submitted article attempted to portray all conservatives as being nervous and afraid of nasty pictures and loud noises. How absurd can it get? Pot, kettle, black.
- ThoughtfulWi, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5RJW must be stoned, because he's getting liberals confused with Rush Limbaugh.
- eir574, on 09/21/2008, -0/+9No, rjwusa. The article absolutely didn't say anything about "all conservatives." It described an experiment in which conservatives were more likely to react to certain stimuli in a certain way than liberals were. "More likely" doesn't mean "always." And, they have experimental data to back up their claim. If you've got a problem with the experimental methodology or the analysis of the data, then you should say so. Not liking the conclusion they came to is not a good reason to outright lie about what was said in the article.
Besides, let's say that other people do generalize about conservatives. It does happen. How does that mean that you should stoop just as low? - omnithought, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5But, eir574, don't you understand? USA! USA! USA! 9/11!!!!!!!
/unnecessary sarcasm tag - kayala, on 09/21/2008, -0/+4Ever heard of the "tu quoque" fallacy, rjwusa? No, you probably haven't, and that's why you think it's valid as an argument.
- rjwusa, on 09/21/2008, -9/+1Liberals must self medicate to escape reality, thus they tend to be calmer when stoned. Pot is fine if one wants to be mildly anesthetized.
- mvader, on 09/21/2008, -7/+1They actually aren't more relaxed... they lack the basic instinct to protect themselves and others.
Note that last part... and others. Don't trust your life to a liberal. They are unlikely to save it.... (specific example: Obama voted against saving babies that are born alive after a botched abortion...)
- omnithought, on 09/21/2008, -1/+4There's nothing prescription about weed, my friend.
- seiga, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Look, these types of studies are ultimately meaningless. Fiscal conservatism, for instance, is a very tenable and (can be) a very intellectual position to have, irrespective of ones personal qualities.
The problem is rooted causally. You may say that nervousness and irritability tend to coincide with conservative party affiliation. But so what? That's an impotent statement. What is much more interesting is to determine how party affiliation and party principles themselves might lead to certain behavioral traits. Then you've got something substantive. - iloveobama, on 09/21/2008, -3/+3Also likely to be more successful and have more money, thus being more conservative, and wanting less taxes and less government telling them what to do with their money
- redscofield, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1buried as inaccurate
- NoCommies, on 09/21/2008, -11/+8EASILY STARTLED = ATTENTIVE
ATTENTIVE = SMARTER
Let's rephrase the article to state what it really means
SMARTER People 'Are Likely To Be Right-Wing'- ChayD, on 09/21/2008, -2/+3Attentive enough to shoot yourselves in the foot...TWICE!?
- NuclearIsShit, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2you mean like bush?
- custangro, on 09/21/2008, -1/+4Isn't it...
EASILY STARTLED = Not paying attention (how can you be scared when you don't know what's going on...)
-C - omnithought, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Nervousness /= Intelligence
- jperson, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1You're easily startled if you're NOT expecting something. Ergo, fail.
- TBombadil, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1***** you brought us Bush *****! go die!
- TheGooseyOne, on 09/21/2008, -4/+11Unscientific study is unscientific.
Also, *****. - RodBorn, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2file this story under D for Duh.
- reland1, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1or even shoot themselves if they happen to have a gun that they didn't turn in for concert tickets...hehehe
- angryfirelord, on 09/21/2008, -2/+3Buried as inaccurate. 46 people (no info on their ages or locations either) is nowhere near a good representative sample. Plus, what exactly constitutes as scary for the average liberal & conservative? I guess haunted hayrides & haunted houses should have voter registration forms & McCain/Palin buttons at the end of the ride because now everyone has somehow turned into a right-winger. :P
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2You've asked questions...
... then decided what the answers are without bothering to find out what the answers are.
Hell, even right-wing think-tanks do some research to back up things they've already decided must be true. Make an effort, please.
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2You've asked questions...
- plnegative1, on 09/21/2008, -3/+4This is ridiculous and a complete failure of the application of science... lets relate a person's hair color to their party affiliation as well
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2Well why don't you Einstein? If there's a statistically significant correlation, then that's an observable phenomena that might warrant further study.
If you have reason to question the scientific rigour of this study by:
Professor John Hibbing
Professor Kevin Smith
Professor Mario Scalora
Professor John Alford
and Peter Hatemi postdoctoral fellow
among others, then I'm sure that The National Science Foundation who funded this research would be interested to hear from you.
What were your qualifications again?... assuming that you know anything about this research other than what was reported in this newspaper article that you may or may not have actually read?
Let me guess. You're a conservative aren't you.
- nick111, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2Well why don't you Einstein? If there's a statistically significant correlation, then that's an observable phenomena that might warrant further study.
- Subcranium, on 09/21/2008, -3/+1This could just be a result of how scary liberals are.
- gnocchi1442, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Only to dumbass rednecks.
- therippa, on 09/21/2008, -2/+1So are stupid people
- rjwusa, on 09/21/2008, -8/+5Conservatives may be a bit jumpy, because they fear an IRS agent jumping from behind a democrat to seize all the conservative's property without due process, to give to the liberal. Also, conservatives are jumpy, because violent criminals carrying guns illegally, to mug hard working conservatives are more likely to be registered as democrat. We have reason to be jumpy.
- Ramenhood, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1My bad, dudes.
- dexter411, on 09/21/2008, -4/+2"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

- ahurt000, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1I have to take meds for anxiety and I'm extremely left-leaning. Perhaps the thought of a McCain regime is making me nervous.
- waydee, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2Whats funny is all the people thinking the US Democrats are liberals.
They're right/left leaning centrists if anything, I appreciate they're described as liberal because they're a damn sight more liberal than the GOP but it's still an incorrect tag to put on them.- UKsHaDoW, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Most party's are close to the center, leaning slightly left or right depending on the party. If the party's were completely different it would be chaos. Since changing generally accepted things quickly would upset people
- bernk1, on 09/21/2008, -0/+4"The study, published in the journal Science, investigated 46 Americans with strong opinions ..."
- lead2thehead, on 09/21/2008, -7/+1Yeah, and ***** are likely to be left wing.
- sonofashoe, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2More startling, a majority of 46 homosexuals don't like people from the other gender.
- pintomp3, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2people like larry craig seem to indicate otherwise.
- lead2thehead, on 09/21/2008, -1/+0Right, so him and maybe 5 or 6 others. But there is not enough room on this comment board to list every prominent gay Democrat.
- Ricemanstm, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1And HUGE Billary supporters!
- ebolaworld, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Closeted ***** are likely to be right wing.
- UKsHaDoW, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2I doubt that includes closet *****'s :P
- scot333, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1its because they can't reconcile the moral implications of sodomy with the religious end of the conservative party.
