Neanderthals traveled more than thought
livescience.com — Neanderthal mobility is highly controversial, but now, by looking at a 40,000-year-oldtooth found in southern Greece scientists found out that in fact Neanderthals were way more mobile than they were given credit for

- atdigg, on 02/10/2008, -9/+13"tooth's levels of strontium showed that the Neanderthal grew up at least 12.5 miles from the discovery site."
Wow 12.5 miles! That can be traveled in 4 hours at leisure pace. What a big discovery! *rolls eyes*- Alex2, on 02/10/2008, -1/+10Maybe the game they hunted and ate, which gave them the metal in their teeth, came from 12.5 miles away, and they just clubbed the animals when they walked by.

- KillerJ59J, on 02/10/2008, -0/+433 diggs in 3 minutes > 66 diggs in 7 minutes. Or maybe it's just a slow news day. Will you please learn how ***** works and stop with that stupid "Front page with only ** diggs?" crap?
- techresearcher, on 02/10/2008, -17/+2Who cares whether some Neanderthals moved?
- Lyph5, on 02/10/2008, -2/+6People who want to know more about our species, mostly.
- annonimality, on 02/10/2008, -0/+6He's saying people want to know how our species came to be. A greater understanding of Evolution will get us there, besides new evidence indicates that our species might have interbred with the Neanderthal. http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/node/814

- offspring06, on 02/10/2008, -1/+4Neanderthals are related to humans(***** sapiens) but are not really human. They are almost like half ape/half human.
- jweatherley, on 02/10/2008, -0/+8Neanderthals (***** neanderthalensis) are a lot closer to humans than any extant non-human great ape. They are more like hairier, stronger humans. They buried their dead: they were a lot more like us than chimps and gorillas.
- riggs32, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2how crazy would it be if they hadn't gone extinct and there were 2 species of human on the planet
- BlackBob, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Then black and white could be united ... against the Neanderthals!!

- jasmin888, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2Neanderthals were almost trees then?
Great thread this, deep and informative.

- quomen, on 02/10/2008, -15/+4***** I hate anthropology. Most boring class ever. My teacher just talks and talks, while I sleep and sleep.
I have to go to the Zoo for an extra cred assignment GFG.- FatLoser, on 02/10/2008, -2/+9College is a waste of time. You should find some rich guy to be your sugar daddy so you can go out and get your nails done and other fun stuff.
- Blackthorne, on 02/10/2008, -1/+5Have you lost your mind? What class is more interesting than anthropology?
- crapmatic, on 02/10/2008, -1/+3I'll just assume GFG means goober fart glass.
- Shaman760, on 02/10/2008, -5/+7I thought the Neanderthals were the ones frisking you down at the airports AKA TSA.
- Shaman760, on 02/10/2008, -2/+5Ooh!! getting dugg down. I see we have some TSA flunkies in the house.
Paperboys with badges you are! Lulz....- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/10/2008, -1/+5The fact that you know you replied to yourself with 18 minutes means you know you aren't going to get dugg up because you know it was a stupid joke.

- mbookmeyer, on 02/10/2008, -11/+4Humans where more advanced than we are now in the past. Read the "Lost Continent of Mu" .. check into "forbidden archeology" The powers that be have a vested interest in you thinking that we evolved the way darwin said. Then where did all these ancient civilizations come from that are more advanced than we've ever been? The proof will keep coming, but you could go look for it.
- PaulC, on 02/10/2008, -0/+11Please tell me your post is just a really good joke about miseducation and conspiracy theories...
- Lyph5, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3I'm really hoping he replies to our replies, I'd love to find out if he is as ***** insane as his post makes him sound.
- schnikies79, on 02/10/2008, -0/+13"The powers that be." I'm sure they many were more advanced than we give them credit, but no one is actively trying to hide this and they were not more advanced than we have ever been.
The ancient Egyptians didn't walk on the moon. The ancient Greeks couldn't communicate instantly across the glove.
Shut up.- lava, on 02/10/2008, -1/+7Man, you'd think communicating instantly across a glove would be really easy
- schnikies79, on 02/10/2008, -0/+4You would think.
lol

- Lyph5, on 02/10/2008, -0/+6Can you provide ANYTHING to back that up? The idea's been mostly dead for almost 70 years now, and your post sounds very "New World Order" nutjobby. From the Wikipedia entry, "General acceptance by the scientific community of the theory of plate tectonics ended any scientific basis for the once popular belief in sunken continents."
And if there was a group of humans more advanced than we are now, where are the ancient satellites? How about any buildings on a non "sunken" continent? No? Nothing?
From Wikipedia: "The books still have devotees, but they are not considered serious archaeology, and nowadays are found in bookshops classed under 'New Age' or 'Religion and Spirituality'." - lava, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2I have to say that when I traveled to Italy I found that the Romans were a much more advanced civilization than I thought. Because they're ancient we tend to think that we're really far ahead of them but that's not necessarily the case. Then the dark ages came and it took Italians until the 16th century to get back to the same levels in culture and architecture as the Roman Empire. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that Roman empire civilization was close to 17th century civilization.
- Lyph5, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2They were advanced for the time, sure. But compared to what we have now, they're cave men.
- PaulC, on 02/10/2008, -0/+11Please tell me your post is just a really good joke about miseducation and conspiracy theories...
- banido, on 02/10/2008, -6/+18How did they find a 40,000-year-old tooth if the world is only 6.000 years old ?
/sarcasm- rnwen2750, on 02/10/2008, -1/+11I have an acquaintance who thinks dinosaurs are a government conspiracy to keep us from believing in Jesus. I wonder what he would say about this...
- neptunebk, on 02/10/2008, -4/+6Nothing, cause hes stupid.

- baalzebub, on 02/10/2008, -1/+4in the quest for food i bet Neanderthals would travel thousands of miles over a lifetime, i know i would before just sitting down and starving to death...
- SineCurve, on 02/10/2008, -0/+8"I would have been surprised if Neanderthals didn'tmove at least 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) in their lifetime, or even in a year... We're talking about humans, not trees,'' Finlayson said.
That's the "scientific" way of saying "Meh."
I would agree... - Haecceity, on 02/10/2008, -0/+11Neanderthals were found all over Europe and in the Middle East and bits of Asia. I think that in itself would suggest they did a considerable amount of traveling without this rather feeble story.
- Dhalgren, on 02/10/2008, -0/+10The tooth did the travelling... Maybe someone had a Neanderthal tooth necklace.
- kambiz, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Shameless self promotion, but I wanted to share what I just wrote before I saw your comment:

The tooth did the traveling, you're absolutely right. This is one example of over analysis.

- thedinomeister, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2That would be cool if I was somehow related to that 9-year-old. Where do I go to compare my DNA?
- kambiz, on 02/10/2008, -0/+4I'm assuming you're a modern human so I hate to break it to you that the our current understanding of modern humans and Neandertals relationships show that they are not genetically nor physical related for what you wanna compare.
Still, to answer your question, if you wanna compare your DNA to other modern human DNA, I would look at 23andMe or deCODEme, which offer kits that sample and compare some of your DNA to others. They kinda are expensive, though.- thedinomeister, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2good to know, and thanks for the info :)

- deepdiggdude, on 02/10/2008, -1/+3"Hey, after dinner, would you guys like to see our travel-glyphs from Greece?"
"We'd love to but, you know, we don't like to keep the babysitter up too late."- RhodesSkolar, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Hilarious comment :o) I wonder if said tooth could have been knocked out during a scuffle over some grape leaves or a goat in heat.
- WKUHilltopper, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2How do they know some saber toothed tiger didn't just crap out that tooth after digesting the guy? Mindless conjecture sprinkled with nonsense...
- Ezzilo, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1I like them. Always travel with motor caravans. Funny those Netherlander.
- motters, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Since they were primarily meat eaters they would have needed to follow the herds. If the animals which they hunted migrated the Neanderthals would have needed to migrate with them, or face starvation.
- sneugol, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1And humans from our times think more than travel.
- williebee, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Big damn deal, I went to the hardware store, market, park (walk dog) and the shoe store today.
Top that!!! - Grok22, on 02/11/2008, -0/+112mi? i can easily run that.
- sugablonde, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Ya know...who knows how many advanced civilizations that have been destroyed that we don't know anything about. I hope God exists just so he can answer all the questions we all have.
