NYC Trade Center dig exposes Ice Age landscape
news.yahoo.com — NEW YORK - Crews excavating the World Trade Center site this summer for the foundations of a new skyscraper have uncovered features carved into the bedrock by glaciers about 20,000 years ago, including a 40-foot-deep pothole.

- gplpark92, on 09/23/2008, -0/+37did the engineers and architects not notice this when building all the other high-rises in Manhattan over the past century?
- OneLess, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3Cheryl Moss seems to imply that this is the only place where the phenomenon looks to have occurred.
- retinalfetish, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Yep, they are very familiar with the glacial bedrock in New York. Geologists have found that it undulates like miniature mountain ranges. You can see where the ridges are via the location of the tallest buildings, which need to be built upon it. Outcrops of this bedrock can also be seen in Central Park.
I think what the article was getting at was that is a rare occasion to study some of the more interesting glacial deformations.. that have not been weathered over time by the elements. - norman619, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4They don't give a damn about this stuff. Unless someone alerts the public or scientific community these finds get brushed aside or literally covered over. Construction companies as well as mining companies uncover archaeological finds all the time but tend not to want to share these finds because they know if they make what they find public work on the site will be slowed if not stopped while experts come down and have a look.
- RudeTurnip, on 09/23/2008, -4/+1Good; let the past be the past, this is taking long enough to finish.
- TVarmy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4RudeTurnip, I'd love to see the towers rebuilt ASAP, but if we discover something amazing, I think delaying a construction project a few months to enhance human knowledge will pay off much more in the long run than an office building being open a bit longer. Good to see the construction team in this case did let the press report on this.
- BigManOnCampus, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Maybe they're digging a deeper foundation for this new building than the old WTC.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/23/2008, -0/+33I think that by the time you pass about the 10-20 ft mark, you've moved on from 'pothole' to something more along the lines of 'crater.'

- davidjunit, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4LIES. Glaciers only recently started melting from man-made global warming. Now give me some money so I can sell you credits... 'n stuff.
- fuzzmeister, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1The presence of natural cycles does not preclude the possibility of these cycles being affected or exacerbated by man.
- govsucks, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3And your accusation that man caused is proven how again? By people who say "We believe that global warming is caused by mankind"
These people KNOW we are to blame for global warming because they compared it to what precedent?
You let me know when our current weather situation can be shown through evidence to be caused by mankind. And I'm not talking about some specifically selected time graph. Hell for that matter, you let me know when you can accurately predict the weather next month let alone speak for a biosphere that has cycles in the millions or even billions of years.
Why don't you people tell the truth and say: "We GUESS its humans causing a rise in temperature, but we have no conclusive evidence." Consensus means nothing except that you could or could not have a large group of bandwagon idiots. - fuzzmeister, on 09/23/2008, -2/+1You do realize that climatologists have gone to school for this, right? This isn't some political debate you can just pick a side on, there is real science to analyze.
- TRScheel, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2You do realize science is about PROVING things and not a consensus, right?
Scientists cant just sit around and have a vote about whether or not gravity exists. - govsucks, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2Fine, Ice core samples show that the Earth has been both hotter and cooler than it is today. Now, prove that what we are experiencing right now is NOT another one of those types of events. What caused those events? Primitive neo-cons with a serious gas problem?
Gravity and global warming are two totally different things. I can throw a ball up and show that gravity exists, can you do the same with mankinds carbon output? I don't think so. The fact is nobody is doing anything but guessing, as scientific a guess as it may be, its still a guess and we have no precedent to show that the "consensus" is correct.
Run along back to the heard now little collectivist.

Turned out that area of lower Manhattan was a major burial ground for Africans (free and slaves) in the 17th and 18th centuries. It's now the African Burial Ground national monument.
