- terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This should be really incredible, whatever information comes back. I'm slightly disappointed that NASA didn't consider landing on Pluto, but I will still remember this day when a decade from now PBS airs an underviewed documentary on the findings.
- wyattxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or the stuff that is just after pluto
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very cool. I can't wait to show my kids (who don't currently exist) the pictures when they finally come back ten years from now. Just like my dad did with those Neptune pictures from Voyager 2 (which was launched prior to my birth). Amazing stuff.
- fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is not realy about Pluto anyway it is more about all the stuff it passes on the way to Pluto ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's just a boring-looking rock that may or may not even be a real planet:

Unfortunatlely the BBC in uk use it for ALL of their web broadcasting...... keeps crashing all the time as well... Glad that real alternative works better - fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome I am looking forward to all the new pictures from our outer planets!
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well if you ask me i think before that ship gets there we will have evented a ship that can get there sooner than 2015.
- DerekNash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This makes me glad i'm so young and will get to see 50 years from now where we will be sending probes to.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no excuses? odd.........
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cripes, can't we think of something better to do with the money, like helping the homeless people of America or trying to stop all of the violence? This is a big waste of money, we're never going to get anything productive out of this, it's not like we're ever going to live on Pluto or find something that is going to be useful in todays society.

- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NASA has been kicking ass and taking names lately. Let's make sure she gets a budget to fund all these great projects.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's hope that little speedster doesn't overshoot, malfunction, or collide with a nugget of crap at 40,000 miles per hour. There've been enough extremely expensive mishaps where this is a real threat to be considered.
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome, lets hope it doesn't explode, crash on impact, gets hopelessly lost in space, and whatever tragic disaster that's happened with shuttles and spacecraft in the last 25 years.
- HighTechJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's fantastic! Let's hope the entire mission is successful and accomplishes what it set out to do.

evented? Is that like ingineering? Or did you mean e-vention, where we just e-mail stuff to Pluto?"
Haha, nice. - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read 24 pounds, not 43. And isnt it appropriate that its powered by Plutonium?
- ucffool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone get the launch video to load? (Real Media File) but WMPclassic fails with errors, and I kinda refuse to install real player.
- darthstygeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great News!!!!! I hope all goes well with this fast *****. Its about time we get the outer solar system explored.
http://darthstygeon.blogspot.com/ - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Natively-built RealPlayer 10 works great on FreeBSD... I imagine Linux as well. I much prefer streaming video via RealPlayer than Windows Media Player, seeing how one works and the other does not.
- otchster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on guys..
im sure "ilyag" has a lot smarter than NASA. come on.. - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw it live.. it was pretty neat. :)

- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I watched it live at school, instead of doing my computer science labs. =D
10 years from now I'm gonna go "I watched that thing take off 10 years ago" - Teratogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad it didn't explode on launch. There is 43 pounds of plutonium on board.

I think THats the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on Digg. The spacecraft isn’t making a direct shot to Pluto using engines. It’s not possible to do that (well it is, but it would take forever to get there). It has to make a number of gravity-assisted slingshots to get there. So if by 2015, you think that we can upgrade to Gravity v2.0, then perhaps you’re right.
As to the person tht said we should be landing on Pluto, that’s not realy feasible right now. The spacecraft would be moving FAR too fast to be able to slow down enough to land. Also, most places we’ve sent probes to have rather dense atmospheres, which are SUPERB at slowing down interplanetary objects. Pluto does have an atmosphere, but its very thin. So it would be like slamming into a brick wall. - Qenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember visiting JPL about 3 years ago and was talking to them about this mission. The fly by of pluto is going to be fast ... VERY fast. Blink and you will miss it type fast.
But 10 years WOW. that will be impressive. I'm glad they got it off in the launch window. The planets don't align to get something like that often. - CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't it be funny if we suddenly invented a new propulsion system that can move much faster than this probe, so basically the newer, much faster probe would be able to pass it...
- Cyrealm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't the world supposed to end in 2012?? That means we won't be around to see it in 2015. LOL.
- lmarso, on 04/16/2009, -0/+0Bah! We'll visit Pluto in faster ships long before 2015.
- Flipino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bah! We'll visit Pluto in faster ships long before 2015."
Doubtful. "Faster ships" would only be possible by abandoning old technology (chemical rockets) and embracing technologies like controlled-nuclear-detonation or anti-matter propulsion. However such methods are prohibitively expensive and dangerous.
Though a sufficiently large solar sail could work... - scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL @ teh_toaster "6) I can't wait to see Uranus!"
I hear Uranus is dirty - UberGeekGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I hear Uranus is dirty"
Yeah, I think it's gathering dust 'cause of comets and metors passing by from out of the galaxy.
