- airwalkery2k, on 09/19/2008, -0/+86I dunno... I've seen some other very absurd, ugly, comical sea creatures today. I'll have to judge them all when the day finally ends.
- decade7, on 09/18/2008, -3/+86ugly? he's pretty! and he smashes open prey until he can feed on its tissue! sounds like an undersea chuck norris to me.
- hansk, on 09/19/2008, -3/+43Its got testicles for eyes.
- NovaPrime9, on 09/19/2008, -0/+36Mantis shrimp are actually very cool creatures. Unless you have one in your reef aquarium- they tend to make fish vanish. Supposedly they can strike with their hammer-type claws with the force of a .22, another reason you don't want them in your tank. But I knew a guy that had one (on purpose) and it was a really inquisitive and interesting animal. Here's a good full-body shot of one: http://www.divegallery.com/mantis.htm
- jsdratm, on 09/19/2008, -0/+28Comical? These things kill just about anything you put in the water with them. They are really aggressive carnivores!

If you start a saltwater aquarium, sometimes one of these comes in the live rock and will sneak out and kill your expensive fish until you catch it. - BaoUnit, on 09/19/2008, -0/+23Who are we to judge? Who?
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -0/+20I have a dream that mantis shrimp will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their testicular eyeballs but by the content of their character.
- hevydevy, on 09/19/2008, -1/+14Id hit it
- alex7575, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12To have his eyes checked? Or his testicles?
- shauntacular, on 09/19/2008, -1/+13Is that really the best picture that they could take?
- mk3k, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11You should go see a doctor.

http://www.resimsakla.com/data/media/20/blobfish_2 ... - BXRWXR, on 09/19/2008, -2/+10Looks like one of the Yip Yips.
- Gonasadude, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8Why the hell is the picture so zoomed in? I can't even see what the thing looks like.
- Shiva11, on 09/19/2008, -1/+9The title is incorrect. I was flipping through the channels and Rosie O'Donnell was on.
- LeonidasStokely, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7This is the most ugly,
http://www.resimsakla.com/data/media/20/blobfish_2 ... - Andrwmorph, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7Peacock Mantis Shrimp destroyed the periodic table, because it only recognizes the element of surprise.
- D3koy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Titles like that create comments like these:
http://www.who-sucks.com/animals/real-life-sea-mon ... - azhura, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6But, does it taste good, is my question.
- thecarpe, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6The endangered species list is actually just a map of species and their proximity to the Peacock Mantis Shrimp.
- pradvan, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Oh... I was hoping to see a pic of Sponge Bob :(
- TKn00b, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Peacock Mantis Shrimp doesn't sleep. He waits.
- AndersenWatcher, on 09/19/2008, -1/+6Nothing that butter and garlic couldn't fix.

- sailadayaway, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4I used to work at a pet store that had a peacock mantis for sale. The day I sold that was the scariest day of my life...
- thecarpe, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4I've never felt sorry for a fish until now. That looks like something out of a poorly illustrated children's book...or W.C. Fields. I just want to take a Sharpie and draw on it - give it a tattoo or eyebrows or a small mustache...
- jdubsta235, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4That's actually Gary the snail from Spongebob Squarepants hungover
- thescimitar, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5in the butt.
- ParaSwarm, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4I don't really look at that many sea creatures each day.
- nickert0n, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4That was bad ass.
- getrealnow, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Both at the same time, just turn your 180 degrees and cough. Thats right, 180 degrees.
- vsaint, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Mantis shrimp are awesome. They have the fastest attack of any animal and the most complex eyes on the planet.
- hendrixlives64, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4hmm... i'm inclined to disagree with the description after googling 'ugly sea creature'
- megamod, on 09/19/2008, -2/+6Is it a peacock, a mantis or a shrimp?
AAAAAAAAAAArrr matey never in my 20 years at sea have I seen a creatures so hideous that would make me want to drink a whole barrel of RUM! -- http://www.talklikeapirateday.com/ - adragontattoo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Ahh Mantis shrimp, one of the few animals that in the process of feeding can shatter a tank.
- zantos420, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Hearken well ye’ scurvy knaves, for this be Talk Like a Pirate Day!
- seantubridy, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5Le me tell you, I've seen a lot of sea creatures today and that one is, by far, the most absurd, ugly, and comical!
- ElTomacco, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4How can you just go around insulting sea creatures like that openthink? You're mean.
- eleece722, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4Here's another cool picture: http://support.nature.org/images/PhotoContest/Natu ...
- bonafideL7, on 09/19/2008, -4/+7kind of looks like my Spore creature
- Garofoli, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3These guys can break aquarium glass, and they do. They cannot be contained... (Unless in Plastic)

- tikal2k, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3HOLY CRAP THESE GUYS CAN SEE IN ULTRAVIOLET AND INFRARED
- Proctor, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3The only way to get them out of your fish tank is to kill them. They'll kill everything
- nbcaffeine, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Big claws on 'em. Live real deep. Big as a man!
- thecarpe, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3deez nutz
- tikal2k, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3The claws of the mantis shrimp have an acceleration of 10,400 g and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start, about the acceleration of a .22 caliber bullet. Because they strike so rapidly, they generate CAVITATION BUBBLES between the appendage and the striking surface. The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produces measurable forces on their prey in addition to the instantaneous forces of 1,500 N that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface, which means that the prey is hit twice by a single strike; first by the claw and then by the collapsing cavitation bubbles that immediately follow. Even if the initial strike misses the prey, the resulting shock wave can be enough to kill or stun the prey.
- kalevinrajo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Absurd-looking, yes. Ugly, maybe. Comical? Hell no.
