- Alex76, on 10/11/2007, -9/+7Simply interesting.
- pastaq, on 10/11/2007, -14/+4Possibly for someone in the 5th grade. I learned I could liken my attention span to gamma rays.
- Lochie, on 10/11/2007, -12/+7Here's a couple of videos I recorded a few years ago after modding my webcam to see infra red light. Kinda cool.

I just uploaded them, so give it a few minutes or so. - JeffreyAtW, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@ Lochie
Did you really need to "mod" your camera to see infrared light? Most webcams can see light coming out of things like remote controls or, say, the Wii sensor bar. (YouTube "sensor bar" for more examples.) - Farik, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13@ Lochie:
Those are potentially the worst video's I've ever seen. - Lochie, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2@ JeffreyAtW:
Yeah, didn't before.. but I know what you mean, seen camcorders etc. able to see IR.
@ Farik:
hahah yeah they're pretty noob.. thought someone might find it interesting. - GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@Lochie
That's not infrared light. That's NEAR-infrared light. It's not the same. You can see "near infrared light" with your eyes, just get an infrared filter like the HOYA-R72*. The difference is, you cannot see real infrared light with a camera's CMOS or with your naked eyes, you need highly specialized equipment. The "mod" your talking about is just a piece of glass at the end of your webcam's lens. Congratulations, here's a ***** cookie.

I've taken a lot of near-infrared photos, but none of them were 'true' infrared. Think of it like this -- true infrared is "heat vision", near infrared is "white trees". For example, here's a photo I took of some Evergreens. The trees are usually dark green. In this photo, they are white. If you're going to get offended that I'm posting an image from my own deviantART, avert your eyes now.
* - http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45615907/ - schnitzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A good try at a popularization, and some cool footage, but how about all the mistakes?
o "Our sun, which is a star, emits visible light, which is why our eyes evolved to detect that kind of light." What a coincidence! (cough cough) I know what she's trying to say, but visible light is *defined* as what our eyes can see.
o "The longest wavelength light are radio waves, which can have wavelengths larger than the planet Earth." Okay, fine, but the graphic shows a wave with its *amplitude* bigger than earth, and its wavelength shorter.
o "Reptiles... Remember, they're cold-blooded." That just means they don't produce their own internal heat, not that they don't get heat from somewhere. She didn't expound, but maybe she should have. The lizard and snake still glowed similar to the other animals.
o "Infrared light can't get through the water vapor in our atmosphere, so the heat is trapped, and our planet gets warmer." Okay, but the graphics show the light beams hitting the atmosphere from the outside. - hasansexy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@gawtmilk
Then you are you calling it "An infrared photo, taken in Vermont." Hmm? What?
And theyre not referring to the so-called infrared filter on the webcam lens, try it yourself, point your webcam to your remote and click it. see? No need to be a bitch.

- grooviekenn, on 10/11/2007, -16/+32interesting video but god she's annoying
- lukehh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4yeah where's the strip search effect?
- sergiolopes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I, for one, thought it was pretty nice. As a user posted in another thread, it was a video made for kids so I guess her more lighthearted approach is understandable.
Also, I don't know if you have any idea how many people don't know the first thing about light and that infrared, microwaves and radio waves they're so used to are also light, just with a different energy.
So, this is a cool video that can give people some hints on what light is about. - jmp478, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1This woman looks like an idiot while eating ice cream.
- razrielle, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1Dum dum dum.....More then meets the eye
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Needs more Nye
- harvinator24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Sadly there are no more eyes of nye, awesome show.
- unloud, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4This sounds and looks like it was made in the 80s
- CrazyAntal, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3So does the website.
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1w00t @ being the 42 duggee!
- gimble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25I know Dr. Thaller (the lady in the video). She is super-enthusiastic, and knowledgable, and friendly. The video has been around for some time as an educational video for kids. My students have used the Spitzer Infrared Space Telescope to observe distant quasars. The Spitzer Science Center has done a lot of education outreach. There are more videos from the SSC available for free as podcasts at the iTunes music store.
- TSK05, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Well has the telescope revolutionized astronomy as it seems to be suggested in the video?
- mushishi, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3She speaks too rapidly and emphatically. Tweaker?
- AzraelRenegades, on 10/11/2007, -14/+4@gimble,
Tell her to get her eyebrows waxed...girl's got some caterpillars. - AICkieran, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@azraelrenegades
Yeah because everything must be reduced to an aesthetic judgement, you pathetic little virgin. - sergiolopes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@azraelrenegades
Dude, film yourself and post that video 10 or so years from now. You'll see how hip you'll be considered then. - mmatessa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@TSK05
Has Spitzer revolutionized astronomy? Depends on what you think about heat maps of planets around other stars:
http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/Media/releases/ssc2007-09/ssc2007-09a.shtml - diggduggjoe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That lovely lady is an astronomer, what is cooler or hotter than that!
Eyebrows? *****, many normal women talk only of their eyebrows.
- djphatjive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1This make it to the front page?
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Yup, it dun did, billy joe!
- DeathfireD, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Id hit that infrared style.
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I've uploaded it to YouTube (which I believe is allowed, since it's part of NASA, JPL, etc.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWxMj64sKgM
It's not available yet, but it will be in a few minutes when it's done processing. Sit tight until then! - concreteclam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have to say, after the endless swarms of "BEST VIDEO CLIP EVAR!!!" front paged video submissions, watching this was very refreshing.
- Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Ice Cube Dirty Sanchez FTW!
- unloud, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I just looked up Dirty Sanchez because of you.
I was eating breakfast. :-( - Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I hope it wasn't Cocoa Puffs!
- unloud, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I just looked up Dirty Sanchez because of you.
- GhostWithToast, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2I wish there a special microphone technology to hear the 'good' wavelength of her irritating voice.
- lazza, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Niiiiiiiice.
Also the video was interesting. - Kahnza, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6I wanna see her naked and turned on in infrared *drool*
- ataylor32, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I loved the randomness they used for their examples. One minute she's roasting marshmallows, the next she's in a swimming pool.
And one more thing... im in ur house leavin infrared footprintz. Sorry, couldn't resist. - gene1102, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2hey punani emmited some light
- planbtech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1haha i saw this in an astronomy class i took last semester thanks for bring back the memories.
- SpideyC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'd like to know how the Zebra stripes still appear in the infra-red spectrum... that's pretty freaky...
- soupyc, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3White absorbs light, black reflects it. Thats why the stripes appear, and thats why they appear in reverse in Infrared. That's also why black stuff left out in the sun gets noticeably hotter than something white.
- robodrew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10In fact its the exact opposite, white reflects light, which makes it appear white (since the light is all reflected back to your eyes), while black absorbs light, therefore making it feel hotter, and also making it look black (since very little light is reflected back to your eyes).
- Sterango, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1@robo if the black is hotter that makes no sense then because everything int he video that was hot shows up brighter.
- dkirkham, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sterango, That's by design.
It's designed to detect heat, (people in smokey rooms for example) and so it makes more sense to have these appear light against a dark background so they're easier to pick out if the heat emitted is only minimal.
It's a process similar to inverting the colours collected by the camera's sensor.
- finista, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6My infrared goggles tell me that is one hot astronomer!
- philz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I'd hit it.
PS: This is Dr. Michelle Thaller:
http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/features/imagery/michellethaller.jpg- Fiyerstorm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is how she'll look once she takes over Earth with her evil infrared powers.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2This makes me want an infrared camera, even a still camera would be cool.
I mean, kinda like that one, not wimpy "nightvision" ones. :-) - jpkuhns, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I HATE UPTALKERS.
- AICkieran, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0They hate you too.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1I'll 40th the notion that she's quite attractive, fourth the notion she's got eye brows that could make Don King jealous, and tenth the 'Hey, pretty cool video, heres a digg.'..
- algoreen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0infrared fart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqCfVVkT2KI
(fake, but...) - directedition, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Too bad the film stock with the greatest infrared sensitivity was made by Kodak, which no longer makes still 35mm film.
- brihar73, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else think Dr. Thaller was the inspiration for Jodie Foster's character in the movie "Contact"? Very similar style, voice, and enthusiasm.
- freewave04, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1this is the problem with teaching methods... everything gives off Energy, not "light", light is merely the visible spectrum of energy.
ex: on an electric range (stove top). From a cold start and on a low setting, the element doesn't give off much energy and is a dark metal color, but if you turn it to it's highest setting, it can glow a very bright red. Light is a spectrum of energy the same as Sound and Temperature. - justo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1what does a scientologist look like in infrared?
- dapharmer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0anyone else thinks she looks like the girl Heather from ideepthroat
- xenoploid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Consumer night vision (e.g. camcorder ) detects near-infrared. The infrared in this video is far-infrared, being detected by a thermal camera (much more expensive than a camcorder). Near and Far just denote the proximity of the waves on the electromagnetic spectrum.
http://science.hq.nasa.gov/kids/imagers/ems/infrared.html
A CCD image sensor in a camcorder can see near-infrared, even without an infrared "mode". Take the camera apart and remove the glass IR filter over the CCD, and you now have night-vision. Get an infrared emitting LED array (which is of course invisible to the human eye) and use it as a spotlight for the CCD of the camera. - GilbertZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Cool! thanks for posting
